For a YouTube church stream, choose bitrate from your connection’s sustained upload speed—not its advertised download speed. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 3 Mbps video for 360p30, 5 Mbps for 480p30, 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Leave at least 20% upload headroom for the complete stream, including audio and network overhead. On a tight connection, start at 360p30 or 480p30 and test during the hours the service will run.
Measure upload speed before choosing a bitrate
A broadband plan’s headline speed may describe download, while a live stream depends on upload. Google’s YouTube streaming tips advise testing the actual connection because inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound upload bandwidth.
- Measure upload speed on the same connection and computer you will use for the service. Prefer wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is the unstable part of the setup; a cable cannot increase the plan’s upstream capacity or remove a data cap.
- Repeat the measurement at the time the church normally streams, and account for household or church devices that share the connection.
- Use the sustained result, not the best momentary result. Choose a stream whose total bitrate fits while retaining YouTube’s recommended 20% room.
The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation for a stream. Its separate simulstream guidance recommends 1.5–2 times the combined target; that is for simulstreaming, not a replacement for the single-stream planning recommendation here.
Choose resolution and video bitrate together
The following are YouTube’s current H.264 live-ingestion recommendations, from its encoder settings and bitrate guidance. The page was checked in 2026 and does not show a publication year. These are video bitrates, not the total bandwidth required by video, audio and transport overhead.

These platform recommendations are not measured results from an Indian ISP or a particular church. The best practical choice depends on the destination, scene movement, encoder and the connection during the service. A mostly static pulpit scene can be easier to encode at a lower rate than frequent camera movement, but test the actual picture—especially distant faces, lyrics and signs—from a viewer’s device.
Set FFmpeg for a YouTube live stream
For YouTube live ingestion, use H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance. FFmpeg’s -b:v sets video bitrate and -b:a sets audio bitrate. The example below uses the libx264 encoder and an illustrative 360p30 starting point: 3 Mbps video and 128 kbps audio.

Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script or share it unnecessarily. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build includes the selected encoder and protocol. The command is an example, not a tested result or a guarantee that a connection can sustain the selected rate.
Adjust the example for higher resolutions
For YouTube’s 480p30 starting point, change the video rate options to -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k. For 720p30, use -b:v 8000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 16000k. Also set output dimensions with a suitable scale filter; changing bitrate alone does not resize the picture. Check the input’s aspect ratio and choose dimensions that avoid stretching or cropping important content.

The paired -maxrate and -bufsize options constrain peaks for this libx264 configuration. Rate-control behavior depends on the encoder, so do not assume the same flags produce identical results with every encoder. Check the options available in your build with ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264, or substitute the encoder name you actually use.
Use real-time reading only for file input
-re reads an input file at approximately its natural playback rate, which is appropriate for the file-based example. Do not impose a low read rate on an actual capture device or live input: FFmpeg documentation warns that doing so can cause packet loss. Check that the connection has enough headroom
At 3 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio, the nominal encoded total is about 3.13 Mbps before transport overhead. Applying YouTube’s 20% room recommendation gives a planning target of roughly 3.76 Mbps of sustained available upload for this stream. This is a calculation from the example settings and YouTube’s guidance, not a published statistic or guarantee. Allow more if other devices upload data or the connection fluctuates.
If your sustained upload cannot support the selected total with headroom, lower the resolution and video bitrate, reduce competing use, or arrange a more reliable connection. Raising FFmpeg’s target bitrate cannot make a constrained connection faster; it can instead increase the chance of interruptions or poor stream health.

Keep speed and monthly data allowance separate
A connection can have enough upload speed but still be unsuitable for continuous streaming if its monthly data allowance is small. At a steady rate, 1 Mbps for 24 hours uses about 10.8 decimal GB before overhead. Estimate usage by multiplying the stream’s total bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 GB per day for each day streamed; for partial days, multiply by the fraction of a day. Include audio and allow for overhead.
Check the broadband provider’s current fair-use, monthly-data and continuous-use terms directly. A specific Indian provider or plan cap is not established here, so there is no single India-wide limit to apply.
Test the complete service setup
- Run a test at the intended resolution and bitrate during the usual service window, not just during a quiet time.
- Include the service’s actual audio and representative movement. Confirm that speech is clear and important visual details can be read on a viewer’s device.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during the test and the service. If upload fluctuates or health degrades, reduce the target rather than relying on the connection’s peak speed.
- Check the monthly data estimate against the provider’s current plan terms before making the stream continuous.
