Recommended Free Tools
Set the incoming video bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate—not to a special 24/7 value. For H.264, common targets are 14 Mbps at 1080p30, 17 Mbps at 1080p60, and 8 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no interval longer than four seconds. Exact FFmpeg flags depend on your installed build and encoder, so verify those options against the matching FFmpeg documentation before using a command.
What bitrate should I use for a 24/7 YouTube livestream?
Use YouTube’s recommended video ingestion bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you send to YouTube. The rates below are video bitrate recommendations, not the combined total for video and audio. YouTube’s live encoder guidance is the source for these values; it is not the separate bitrate table for prerecorded video uploads.
| Input codec | Resolution and frame rate | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1440p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1440p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p, 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p, 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| H.264 | 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| H.264 | 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1440p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1440p, 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 480p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| H.264 | 360p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p60 H.264 stream should be configured around the 17 Mbps recommendation; a 1080p30 H.264 stream around 14 Mbps. Choose a row matching what you actually send, not just the source file’s properties. YouTube’s current recommendations are at YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (accessed 2026).
Does YouTube need a different bitrate for a continuous stream?
No duration-based adjustment appears in YouTube’s published recommendations: the target is based on input codec, resolution, and frame rate. Running continuously changes the operational requirement—you need an upload connection and encoder that can sustain the stream—not the published bitrate target. A rate matching the table can still starve if the connection cannot deliver it reliably.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If your connection cannot sustain the recommended rate, lower the resolution or frame rate and use the matching recommendation for that output. A bitrate number alone does not guarantee visual quality; confirm the actual stream is stable and inspect its health.
Which encoder settings should accompany the bitrate?
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe frequency; do not let the interval exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the ingest address and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio rather than inventing an endpoint.
- Video: YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Audio, when present: YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 kbps stereo in its advanced-setting recommendations.
The keyframe interval guidance is also reflected in the YouTube Live Streaming API health reference, which says to use a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less. That API page was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

How to set the value in FFmpeg without guessing at flags
- Identify the installed build and encoder. Check the FFmpeg version and which video encoder your build will use. Option names and behavior can differ by encoder and build.
- Choose output codec, resolution, and frame rate. Match those intended output properties to a row in YouTube’s table. Do not pick a bitrate from a different codec or frame-rate row.
- Set the target video rate and CBR behavior using that encoder’s documentation. The official YouTube guidance specifies the desired result, but does not document FFmpeg command-line syntax. A generic video-bitrate option by itself does not establish that the encoder is operating in CBR or that its rate-control behavior meets YouTube’s guidance.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval and verify GOP behavior. Confirm the selected encoder’s syntax and whether its GOP is closed; do not assume the same flag works identically across encoders.
- Use YouTube Studio’s ingest address and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Protect the stream key and use the values supplied for your stream.
- Run a representative test before committing to an always-on session. Include audio and movement similar to the intended content, then check YouTube’s stream-health panel for warnings and stability.
Because YouTube’s official pages define output requirements rather than FFmpeg syntax, no copy-and-paste FFmpeg command is safe to prescribe generically here. Verify every option against documentation for the exact FFmpeg version and encoder installed on your machine.
Test upload capacity and monitor stream health
YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality the connection can sustain. Test with audio and movement like the real stream, then monitor stream health and its messages during operation. Leave headroom for connection variation rather than treating a momentary speed-test result as proof that an always-on stream will remain stable.

YouTube’s health diagnostics can flag bitrate that is too high or too low, a long or overly short GOP, an open GOP, unsupported codec, missing audio or video, multiple audio or video streams, mismatched backup-stream settings, or video ingestion starvation. Starvation means YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth playback. The API health reference is primarily useful to integrations; most creators can check the stream-health panel in YouTube Studio.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom or health message | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Bitrate too high | Configured rate versus the selected codec/resolution/frame-rate recommendation, and actual sustained upload capacity. | Correct the target or reduce output resolution/frame rate to a sustainable matching row; test again. |
| Bitrate too low or starvation | Whether the encoder is sending the intended rate consistently and whether the connection is dropping or failing to keep up. | Check encoder output and connection stability; if necessary choose a lower output mode and retest. |
| Long or short keyframe interval | Encoder keyframe/GOP interval against YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum. | Adjust using the selected encoder’s documentation and verify the resulting interval. |
| Open GOP | Whether the encoder is producing a closed GOP as expected. | Consult the encoder’s documentation and configure GOP behavior accordingly. |
| Unsupported codec | The codec actually being sent, not only the source media codec. | Choose a codec listed in YouTube’s live encoder guidance and confirm the encoder output. |
| Missing audio/video or multiple streams | Output stream mapping and which audio/video tracks FFmpeg is sending. | Review the selected inputs and output mapping so the intended streams are present without unintended duplicates. |
| Mismatched backup-stream settings | Whether primary and backup streams use compatible settings. | Align the streams’ settings and check health again. |
The diagnostic categories above are described in Google’s YouTube Live API health documentation. If YouTube reports a problem, rely on the specific health message and the stream’s actual output rather than assuming the configured bitrate alone explains it.
