You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from Linux by having an encoder such as FFmpeg read your media playlist, encode the files as a continuous live feed, and send that feed to YouTube Live—typically over RTMPS for an H.264 workflow. The key distinction is that an ordinary M3U file listing videos is not the same thing as the M3U8/M3U media playlist used by YouTube’s HLS ingest protocol. Identify which one you have before configuring the encoder.
What you need—and which kind of M3U you have
The basic setup has four parts: media files you have the right to stream, a Linux host that stays online, an encoder process that reads and outputs the media, and a YouTube Live stream with an ingest address and private stream key. YouTube receives the encoded live output; it does not simply take an ordinary M3U source list and play it for you.
Ordinary M3U source list
A typical M3U playlist is a text file listing media files or URLs for a player or encoder to process. It may contain local paths, relative paths, or network addresses. This is the likely meaning if you built a playlist of videos to play in sequence. Confirm that the paths resolve from the Linux server, not just from your desktop, and that the server account running the encoder can read each file.
YouTube HLS media playlist
For HLS ingest, an M3U or M3U8 file is a protocol file describing media segments being uploaded to YouTube, not a general list of complete videos. YouTube’s HLS guidance requires the first sequence number to start at zero and sequence numbers to increase monotonically; no more than five segments may be outstanding. It also recommends retaining a few acknowledged segments in each playlist. These requirements apply to HLS media playlists, not automatically to a local M3U file listing source videos. See YouTube’s HLS ingest documentation.

Choose the YouTube ingest protocol
YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest. They differ in encryption, supported codecs, latency, and workflow. The current protocol guide is the authority for the options available to your stream and account: YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison.
| Protocol | What the documentation establishes | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Supports H.264 and normal through ultra-low latency; not the encrypted RTMPS option. | When your encoder and stream configuration use RTMP and its latency profile suits the broadcast. |
| RTMPS | RTMP carried over an SSL connection; supports H.264 and normal through ultra-low latency. YouTube’s guidance specifies the correct RTMPS endpoint and path, port 443, and SNI hostname handling. | A common secure choice to investigate for an H.264 file-based stream. |
| HLS | Encrypted segment-based ingest; supports H.264 and HEVC. It typically has higher latency than RTMP-family protocols and requires an HLS media-playlist workflow. | When codec or high-resolution workflow requirements call for it and your sender implements YouTube’s HLS segment rules. |
| DASH | Segment-based ingest; supports H.264 and VP9. It typically has higher latency than RTMP-family protocols. | When your encoding workflow and required codec align with DASH ingest. |
For a continuous stream from an ordinary source playlist, first check the codec and protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room and supported by your FFmpeg build. RTMPS is not mandatory or universally best. If you need HDR, HEVC, VP9, or another advanced workflow, check YouTube’s current protocol guide rather than assuming the RTMPS configuration applies.

Set up the YouTube Live stream securely
- Enable live streaming for the channel. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and complete any channel eligibility or verification steps YouTube presents. Availability and account requirements can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.
- Create or open the live stream in Live Control Room. Use the stream’s current settings to identify the ingest protocol and obtain the ingest URL and stream key (also called stream name in some API documentation).
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not commit it to source control, publish it in a tutorial or screenshot, or leave it in a world-readable script. Use a protected configuration file or secret store with access limited to the service account.
- Enter the endpoint in the encoder in the format it expects. Some interfaces take the server URL and stream key separately; others take a combined address such as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the exact endpoint and path YouTube presents for that stream. For RTMPS, YouTube’s documentation calls out port 443 and SNI hostname handling; an arbitrary RTMPS address is not interchangeable with the assigned endpoint. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS and the LiveStreams API reference.
Prepare Linux and verify the playlist
Install FFmpeg and check its capabilities
Install a current FFmpeg build using your distribution’s trusted package source or another trusted packaging route. FFmpeg’s available protocols and codecs depend on how the build was packaged. Check the FFmpeg protocol documentation and your installed build’s help output to verify the protocol and codecs you plan to use. This article does not prescribe a universal command: the correct invocation depends on playlist syntax, media codecs, audio presence, and whether you are copying compatible streams or transcoding them.
Check every playlist entry from the server
- Use paths that exist on the Linux host and are readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- For relative paths, establish the intended working directory; a service manager may start in a different directory than your shell.
- Check that URLs are reachable from the server and do not depend on a temporary login session, expiring token, or a local network share that will disconnect.
- Confirm the media files are complete and have compatible video and audio streams. A silent or video-only source may need deliberate handling in the encoder workflow.
- Check the list’s ordering and loop behavior in the player or encoder you choose. M3U syntax and how applications interpret options or malformed entries can differ.
Run a short test before leaving it unattended
Start the encoder interactively with a short representative playlist and inspect its output and FFmpeg logs. Confirm that it reaches YouTube’s ingest endpoint, that YouTube’s preview shows both picture and expected audio, and that the stream remains healthy when moving from one playlist entry to the next. Test the actual codecs and resolution you intend to use. Avoid guessing a bitrate: select settings compatible with YouTube’s current stream configuration and your available sustained upload capacity.

Turn the working encoder into a continuous service
An interactive terminal session is not a reliable 24/7 supervisor. Once the test works, run the encoder under a process manager such as the Linux host’s service manager, or under a container supervisor. Configure it to start on boot and restart after an unexpected process exit. These are operational recommendations, not YouTube ingest requirements.
Service and host checks
- Run under a dedicated, minimally privileged account with read access to the media and protected access to the stream key.
- Set a deliberate restart policy and avoid an aggressive restart loop if the endpoint or playlist is invalid; retain enough logs to diagnose repeated failures.
- Monitor process state, logs, disk space, outbound network traffic, and server availability. Alerting matters because an unattended process can fail silently.
- For a VPS, compare sustained outbound bandwidth and transfer allowance, CPU capacity if transcoding, uptime and support terms, and network access to YouTube. The required resources depend on your media and encoding choices; no single server size or monthly cost is established here.
- Use YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health information to check the received broadcast, especially after changing the playlist, encoder settings, or server.
Rights, copyright, and channel policy
A 24/7 schedule does not grant permission to rebroadcast the material. Make sure you have the necessary rights for every video, soundtrack, and other included content, including permission for the way you stream it. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and applicable copyright and monetization rules. Repeating the same material continuously does not guarantee monetization; channel eligibility and reused-content decisions are separate from whether the encoder successfully sends a live feed.

Troubleshooting a Linux-to-YouTube stream
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong endpoint or stream key, wrong protocol, blocked outbound connection, or incorrect RTMPS endpoint/path or SNI handling. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room; confirm the encoder uses the selected protocol and that the host can reach the specified endpoint and port. For RTMPS, consult YouTube’s endpoint guidance. |
| FFmpeg cannot open playlist entries | Paths are wrong from the service’s working directory, permissions are insufficient, or a URL is unavailable. | Check the entries as the service account, verify the working directory and file permissions, and test network URLs from the server. |
| Stream starts but has no sound or picture | Source files may lack the expected stream, playlist transitions may expose incompatible media, or output settings may not match the source. | Inspect representative inputs and FFmpeg logs; test a transition in YouTube’s preview and set explicit compatible output handling for the actual media. |
| Stream drops when the process exits | The encoder was launched only in an interactive session or the host restarted without a managed service. | Run it under a service manager or container supervisor, enable a suitable restart policy, and review exit logs to fix the underlying failure. |
| Frequent buffering or unstable output | Insufficient sustained upload capacity, host resource pressure during transcoding, or an unstable route to ingest. | Check server CPU and network utilization, transfer limits, and YouTube stream-health information. Reduce encoding demands only in a way that remains compatible with the channel’s chosen ingest settings. |
| HLS ingest rejects or falls behind on segments | The sender may be treating a source-video M3U as an HLS media playlist, or may violate sequence and outstanding-segment rules. | Use a genuine HLS segmenting sender and follow YouTube’s HLS requirements; an ordinary M3U list is not a substitute. |
