How to Set Parental Controls Before Playing GTA 6

Set the controls on your child’s account before buying or launching Grand Theft Auto VI. On PlayStation 5, use PlayStation family controls or the PlayStation Family App. On Xbox Series X|S, use the Xbox Family Settings app or the console’s family settings. Set the allowed game rating below the title’s Mature 17+ classification to block it automatically, or keep the age setting and require an adult decision for an explicit exception. Also enable purchase approval, set a spending limit, review communication and privacy permissions, and test the child profile while the adult account is signed out.

What parents should know about GTA 6 first

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation lists November 19, 2026 as the PS5 release date. Rockstar says the game can be pre-ordered for both platforms and that its physical edition contains a download code rather than a traditional game disc. Rockstar also describes Standard and Ultimate editions, but edition names, upgrade terms, pricing and availability can change before release.

The ESRB lists Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+. Its content descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus In-Game Purchases. The rating is a useful decision aid, not a substitute for discussing the game with your child.

PlayStation’s official game information says Grand Theft Auto games regularly include profanity, violence, sexual themes and depictions of illegal acts and are generally not recommended for children. One Xbox store listing has displayed “RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+,” while another regional listing shows the full M 17+ descriptor set. Check the store for your country and the current ESRB listing before making a final decision, because classifications and labels can vary by region and software version.

#1 Best Overall
Grand Theft Auto VI - PlayStation 5 (Code in Box, Delivers 11/12/26, Playable 11/19/26)
  • This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
  • Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
  • Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.

Choose the outcome you want

There are two sensible setups. If your rule is “my child cannot play GTA 6,” use a child account with an age or content level below M 17+ and leave the adult account out of the child’s everyday play. If you might allow the game later, keep the child account supervised, require adult approval for purchases and exceptions, and avoid removing every restriction just to make one game available.

  • Automatic block: the console’s rating filter prevents an M-rated game from being downloaded, purchased or launched by the child profile, depending on the platform and account state.
  • Case-by-case approval: the child can request access or a purchase, while the parent makes the decision from the family-management tools.
  • Household controls beyond the rating: time limits, spending limits, privacy, communication and online-interaction permissions still matter even if the game itself is blocked.

Prepare the accounts before changing settings

  1. Use a separate child profile. Do not let the child play routinely on the adult account. A rating filter attached to a supervised child account cannot protect you if the child knows the adult profile’s passcode.
  2. Secure the adult account. Use a passcode or sign-in protection that the child does not know. Do not save an unrestricted payment method where the child can approve purchases without you.
  3. Confirm the child’s date of birth and family membership. Incorrect account details can produce the wrong age level or prevent the family-management app from applying controls as expected.
  4. Update the console and family-management app. Menu names can move after firmware or app updates. Use the current labels shown on your system rather than relying on an old screenshot.
  5. Decide whether the rule covers downloads, physical copies and streaming. A store block may not answer every question about a physical product, a download code or another account’s library. Apply the same household rule to every way the game could become playable.

Set parental controls on PlayStation 5

1. Create or select the supervised PlayStation account

Open the PS5 family-management area or the PlayStation Family App and make sure the child is represented by a supervised account. The adult account should remain the family manager. If the child currently uses the adult profile, create or add the child profile before setting the rating restriction; otherwise the restriction will not govern the profile actually being used.

2. Open family controls

Use PlayStation family controls on the console or the PlayStation Family App. Sony’s GTA VI information identifies the Family App as the place where PlayStation accounts can be age restricted. The exact navigation labels can differ by country and software version, so look for the child account’s content, age-level or parental-control settings rather than expecting a particular screenshot-level path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Set the game and content level below M 17+

Choose the child’s age or content level and set it below the game’s M 17+ rating if your goal is an automatic block. A lower level is the straightforward setting for preventing an M-rated title from appearing as an allowed game. If you are considering an exception, leave the account supervised and use the approval workflow instead of switching the child to an unrestricted adult profile.

  • ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
  • TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.

4. Require purchase approval and limit spending

Turn on the setting that requires the family manager’s approval for purchases. Add a spending limit appropriate to your household, and review whether the limit applies to games, downloadable content, subscriptions and in-game purchases. The ESRB identifies rating blocks, play-time limits and management of in-game spending as core uses of device parental controls. GTA VI’s ESRB listing includes In-Game Purchases, so a game-level decision should not be treated as the only spending safeguard.

5. Review communication, privacy and play time

Check who can contact the child, who can join games, whether voice or text communication is allowed, what profile information is visible, and how long the child can play. Set schedules that match your family’s rule rather than relying on the game’s rating to manage late-night or extended sessions. These settings are separate from the content filter; changing one does not necessarily change the others.

6. Test from the child account

Sign out of the adult account, sign in only to the child profile and try the relevant store and game actions. Confirm that an M-rated title is blocked or that an approval request is generated, that an unapproved purchase cannot complete, and that the intended communication and play-time limits activate. If the adult account remains signed in, the test can give a false impression of protection.

Set parental controls on Xbox Series X|S

1. Add the child to your Microsoft family group

Use the child’s Microsoft account as a member of the family group and make sure the child plays through that profile. Do not share the adult profile or its sign-in credentials. A family rule applies to the supervised account, not to every profile on the console.

2. Open Xbox Family Settings

Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the family settings available on the console. The Xbox store provides parental-control information, while Microsoft’s family tools contain the account controls. App and console wording can vary by region and update, so select the child profile and look for age filters, purchase approval, spending, privacy, communication and screen-time controls.

3. Set the allowed rating below M 17+

Set the child’s allowed game rating below Mature 17+ to block GTA VI automatically. If the parent may approve the game, configure the family approval process rather than raising the child’s account to an unrestricted adult level. The store’s rating display is not identical in every region, so use the classification shown in your local store together with the ESRB information when deciding the threshold.

4. Turn on purchase requests and spending controls

Require approval for purchases and review the spending setting for games, add-ons and in-game transactions. Test that a child cannot complete a purchase without the adult response. The ESRB specifically describes spending management as a parental-control function, and the Xbox listing flags in-game purchases for the title.

5. Configure privacy, communication and screen time

Review multiplayer and communication permissions, friend and follower visibility, voice and text chat, and the child’s daily or scheduled play time. These controls address online contact and routine use even when a game is permitted. Keep the settings consistent with your family’s rules; an age filter alone does not control every online interaction.

What the M 17+ rating means for this decision

The ESRB’s listing states that Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. It also lists In-Game Purchases. Those descriptors explain why an age filter is relevant, but they do not tell you how your child will react to every scene, mission or online interaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the rating as a starting point for a conversation about violence, sexual material, language, illegal acts, alcohol and drugs, and spending. Explain whether your household rule is a complete block, a future review at a particular age, or access only with an adult present. If you decide to allow the game, keep purchase approval, communication limits and play-time controls in place.

How to handle purchases, physical copies and download codes

Digital purchase

Keep purchase approval enabled before the child can open the store. A rating block may stop the title from being available to the child account, while approval controls address the separate question of whether money can be spent. Verify both by making a test request and checking that no transaction completes without the adult response.

Physical edition

Rockstar says the physical version includes a download code. That means buying a physical package may still involve redeeming a code and downloading the game through the platform account. Apply the same account and rating rules to redemption and installation; do not assume that a physical package bypasses digital family controls.

Another account’s library

If the game is owned by an adult account on the same console, check whether the child can access that library under your platform’s sharing and family settings. The safest verification is practical: sign out of the adult account, use the child profile, and attempt to start the title. If the child can launch it despite the intended rule, tighten the account or sharing configuration rather than relying on the store purchase block alone.

Troubleshooting when the restriction does not work

The child can still launch GTA 6

  • Check that the child is using the supervised profile, not the adult account.
  • Confirm the age filter is below M 17+ and was saved to the correct child account.
  • Sign out of the adult account and repeat the test.
  • Review library sharing, downloaded content and any approval already granted.
  • Update the console and family-management app, then check the current help screen for changed labels.

The child can buy the game or add-ons

  • Confirm that purchase approval is enabled for the correct family member.
  • Remove saved payment access from the child profile where possible and keep the adult passcode private.
  • Check whether a spending limit applies to the purchase type being tested.
  • Test an in-game purchase separately from a full-game purchase, because controls may present different prompts.

The rating shown does not match the article or another store

Age classifications can vary by country, and store data can change before release. One Xbox listing has shown a pending-likely-Mature notice while another regional listing shows the complete M 17+ descriptors. Use the current store for your account’s region and the current ESRB listing for North American guidance. Do not use a different country’s label as proof that your local restriction is configured correctly.

The app cannot manage the child account

  • Verify that the adult account is the family manager.
  • Confirm that the child account is actually in the family group.
  • Check that you are signed into the same account used on the console.
  • Install current app updates and follow the app’s present account-linking instructions.
  • If a setting is unavailable, use the console’s family settings and consult the platform’s current support flow for your region.

A final pre-launch checklist

  • The child has a separate supervised account.
  • The adult profile has a private passcode.
  • The allowed game rating is below M 17+ if GTA VI must be blocked.
  • Purchase approval is required.
  • Spending limits cover games, downloadable content and in-game purchases.
  • Privacy and communication permissions match your household rule.
  • Play-time or screen-time schedules are active.
  • You have considered both digital purchases and the physical edition’s download code.
  • You tested the store and launch behavior with the adult account signed out.
  • You rechecked the local rating display and current app labels before release.

What to recheck before release

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 according to PlayStation, but release information, edition names, upgrade terms, prices and stock can change. Recheck those details, the local age classification, the store listing, and the wording in the PlayStation Family App or Xbox Family Settings when you configure the console. The control categories are stable—rating, approval, spending, privacy, communication and time—but the exact screens are not guaranteed to remain identical.
