In Dragon’s Dogma 2, configure your main Pawn at a Riftstone, change its inclination at a campsite with the matching Rift Incense (or with an Art of Metamorphosis), equip vocation-legal gear from the Equipment or Items menu, then rest at an inn while online to publish the updated Pawn. Each step affects what your Pawn does, what other Arisen see when hiring it, and which resources you spend.
What you can change, and where each change is made
Pawn management is split between several locations rather than one master screen. Use the following map before you start:

Exact button names and controller inputs can differ by platform and by custom bindings. Follow the on-screen prompt shown for your version instead of relying on a particular button label.
How to set a Pawn Quest at a Riftstone
Capcom’s manual gives the essential instruction: “To set a pawn quest, simply access a riftstone.” The complete setup is still worth doing carefully because the reward is committed when you configure the quest.

Step-by-step setup
- Find and activate a Riftstone. Interact with it in the world to open its Pawn-related options.
- Choose the Pawn Quest option for your main Pawn. This is the Pawn that represents your account to other players.
- Select an available objective. Objectives can ask the visiting Pawn to perform a task, and item retrieval can be used to request an item from another Arisen.
- Choose the reward. The game allows a specific item or a sum of gold, depending on the objective and available choices.
- Confirm the quest. The selected item is removed from your inventory immediately, or the selected gold is deducted from your funds. Make sure you can afford to give the reward before confirming.
How Pawn Quests work after publication
Your main Pawn can complete its quest while traveling beyond the Rift with another player’s party. Completing quests gives the visiting Arisen a reason to hire your Pawn and gives your Pawn opportunities to acquire items and Pawn Badges. If you use an item-retrieval objective, the quest functions as a request for another Arisen to bring back the specified item.
Choosing a reward without wasting resources
- Offer an item you genuinely want to give away. The reward is consumed when the quest is configured, not when another player eventually reports completion.
- Use gold when replacing an item would disrupt your build. Gold avoids sacrificing a unique or currently equipped object, but the amount still comes out of your funds.
- Match the reward to the objective. A useful, achievable request is more attractive than an expensive promise attached to a task other players are unlikely to finish.
- Review the returned Pawn. When the quest ends, inspect the Pawn’s report and set a new quest at a Riftstone if you want to offer another objective.
How to change your main Pawn’s inclination
Inclination changes are supported for the main Pawn through two official methods. Capcom’s FAQ, updated October 12, 2026, states that you can use the desired Rift Incense while camping or use an Art of Metamorphosis. The same FAQ says the Art of Metamorphosis is obtained in-game at the Pawn Guild.
Method 1: Rift Incense at a campsite
- Obtain the Rift Incense for the inclination you want. Check the item’s name before using it; incense is tied to a particular inclination.
- Set up a campsite. You need a camping kit and a valid campsite location.
- Make sure the incense is in your possession. The official instruction specifically refers to talking to your main Pawn while the Pawn has a Rift Incense in possession.
- Talk to your main Pawn at camp. Use the conversation option that applies the incense and confirm the change.
- Finish the camp sequence. The new inclination should be used by the Pawn after the change is applied.
Method 2: Art of Metamorphosis
- Obtain an Art of Metamorphosis at the Pawn Guild. Capcom identifies the Pawn Guild as the in-game source.
- Use the item through the character-customization option it opens. Select your main Pawn when prompted.
- Choose the desired inclination and confirm. Review the resulting behavior before leaving the customization screen.
Use the incense method when you already know the target inclination and have the matching item. The Art of Metamorphosis is the alternative when you prefer to make the change through the broader Pawn-customization interface.

How inclination changes Pawn behavior
An inclination is not a direct script for every fight. It is a behavioral preference that works alongside vocation, available skills, your commands, and the surrounding situation. The official command manual illustrates this interaction: during combat, a command can direct Pawns to spread out across the battlefield; while exploring, commands can prompt them to interact with nearby treasure chests, mechanisms, and gathering spots.
Choose by party role, not by a universal tier list
Capcom’s current official material does not establish a complete ranking that makes one inclination universally best. Select the inclination that supports the job your Pawn is meant to perform and the way you want the party to operate.

| Which party function is missing? | Favor behavior that helps cover the gap, such as frontline pressure, support, ranged contribution, or utility. |
| How much autonomy do you want? | Consider whether you prefer a Pawn that responds closely to commands or one that acts more independently while fighting and exploring. |
| Do you frequently issue commands? | An inclination that complements your command habits is more useful than one selected only because it is popular. |
Test a changed inclination during both combat and travel. Observe whether the Pawn takes positions, approaches targets, handles discoveries, and responds to your commands in the way your party needs. If the behavior does not fit, change it again with another incense or an Art of Metamorphosis.

How to equip weapons and armor on your Pawn
Equipment is managed from the Pause menu. The most common causes of an unavailable Equip command are managing the wrong character, leaving the item in the Arisen’s inventory, or selecting gear that the Pawn’s current vocation cannot use.

- Open the Pause menu. Enter the Equipment or Items interface shown by your platform.
- Switch the managed character to your main Pawn. Do not remain on the Arisen’s equipment panel.
- Check the Pawn’s current vocation. Use it to filter your choices mentally before selecting an item.
- Move the gear to the Pawn if necessary. If the weapon, armor, or clothing is in the Arisen’s inventory, transfer it into the Pawn’s inventory first.
- Select the item and choose Equip. Confirm the slot and any warning the game presents.
- Repeat for each slot you want to update. Review the complete loadout rather than changing only the weapon.
Equipment legality and the disabled Equip command
A Pawn can equip only items compatible with its current vocation. A weapon class intended for a different vocation, or armor that the Pawn cannot wear, will not be available to equip. If Equip is missing or unavailable, check these points in order:
- You are on the main Pawn’s character panel.
- The item has actually been transferred to the Pawn’s inventory.
- The item is a weapon, armor, or clothing piece supported by the current vocation.
- You are selecting the item from the correct category and slot.
Changing vocation can change which equipment is legal. Recheck the loadout after a vocation change instead of assuming every previously equipped item remains usable.
Why a Pawn’s items or equipment can change on their own
Two documented systems can make the inventory look different after you set it up.
Hawker and Logistician specializations
Capcom’s FAQ documents that a Pawn with the Hawker or Logistician specialization may automatically receive items or equipment from the Arisen. These specializations can also sell low-rarity items to reduce carried weight. If gear disappears or the inventory changes after travel, inspect the Pawn’s specialization and the item history before assuming the game lost equipment.
Forfeited Pawns
If a Pawn becomes forfeit, items that Pawn was holding are automatically sent to item storage. Check storage before replacing the equipment or concluding that it has been permanently destroyed.

How to make other players see the updated Pawn
Local changes are not enough to guarantee that another player immediately sees the new version. After changing equipment, inclination, vocation, skills, or the Pawn Quest, rest at an inn while connected to the network. Capcom says this uploads the Pawn’s information so other players can hire the current version, although the reflection can take some time.
Reliable publication checklist
- Finish every change you want to publish: quest, reward, inclination, vocation, skills, and equipment.
- Confirm the Pawn’s inventory and equipped slots, including any transfers from the Arisen.
- Verify that the Pawn Quest reward is affordable and that its objective is the one you intend to offer.
- Connect to the network and rest at an inn.
- Allow time for the update to appear in the Rift. Other players may temporarily see an earlier record while the upload propagates.
Resting at a campsite changes the Pawn locally but is not the publication step identified by Capcom. Use the online inn rest when your goal is to refresh the version available for hiring.

When rebuilding a Pawn from scratch, use this order so that each choice is evaluated against the final role:
- Define the party job. Decide what your group lacks and what you want the Pawn to do without constant intervention.
- Set the vocation. This establishes which weapons and armor are legal.
- Apply the inclination. Use matching Rift Incense at camp or an Art of Metamorphosis, then observe the behavior in a short trip.
- Equip the loadout. Transfer items to the Pawn first, then equip vocation-compatible pieces and verify every slot.
- Create the Pawn Quest. At a Riftstone, choose an objective and a reward you can afford to surrender.
- Publish the record. Rest at an inn online and wait for the updated data to be reflected.
Comparing Pawn setups before you commit
Use these criteria when deciding between two possible configurations:

| Inventory upkeep | Could Hawker or Logistician behavior alter the carried items? | Low-rarity items are sold or equipment is transferred automatically. |
| Online visibility | Have you rested at an online inn since making the changes? | Other players still see an older Pawn record. |
Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot find the Pawn Quest setting.”
Interact with a Riftstone itself and select the Pawn Quest setting for the main Pawn. The quest is not configured from the ordinary inventory screen.
“The reward is gone before anyone completes the quest.”
That is expected. The selected item is removed from your inventory, or the selected gold is deducted from your funds, when the quest is configured.

“The inclination did not change.”
Confirm that you used the Rift Incense associated with the intended inclination, that you were talking to the main Pawn at a campsite, and that the incense was in the Pawn’s possession. If using the alternative method, verify that you selected the main Pawn through Art of Metamorphosis.

Switch to the main Pawn, transfer the item from the Arisen if needed, and check vocation compatibility. These checks resolve the normal inventory, character-selection, and legality causes.
“My Pawn is selling or receiving items.”
Inspect whether Hawker or Logistician is active. Those specializations can move items or sell low-rarity items to reduce weight.
“The Pawn was forfeited and its items are missing.”
Open item storage. Items held by a Pawn that becomes forfeit are sent there automatically.
“Friends still see the old Pawn.”
Rest at an inn while online after completing the changes. Capcom notes that the reflection is not necessarily immediate, so allow time for the updated record to propagate.
