Use the child’s account and the platform’s family tools: PlayStation uses Family Management, Xbox uses a Microsoft family group and Family Safety, and Nintendo uses the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for play time plus the parent Nintendo Account for purchases. Set the account structure first, then configure time limits and spending separately.
Choose the right control for your console
Play-time limits and purchase controls are separate settings. A bedtime schedule can stop or interrupt play, but it does not by itself prevent a child from buying a game. Likewise, a spending limit does not limit hours played. The control’s scope also differs: PlayStation and Xbox describe limits tied to a child account or family member, while Nintendo says most parental-control options on a Switch or Switch 2 apply to the entire console.

PlayStation: use a separate child account
PlayStation play-time controls require the child to have a separate child account in the family group. The adult changing settings must be the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian. Do not configure limits while signed in only to an adult account: the settings must be attached to the child account that will play.

- Confirm the child appears in the family group.
- Sign in as the family manager or appointed parent/guardian before opening Family Management.
- Have the correct time zone ready; schedules are interpreted using the time zone selected for the child’s settings.
Xbox: create a Microsoft family group
Add the child to a Microsoft family group, then manage Xbox access through the Xbox Family Settings app or the Microsoft family website. Microsoft states that only a parent in the family group can change a child’s Xbox privacy and online settings. Make sure the child signs in with the Microsoft account that is actually in that family group; limits configured for another account will not govern the console session.
Nintendo: decide whether the shared-console model fits
Nintendo divides the controls between three places: the console, the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for iOS and Android, and the parent’s Nintendo Account. The app needs an internet connection to work with either a Switch 2 or a Switch. Because most Nintendo restrictions are system-wide, a timer intended for one child can also affect siblings or adults using the same console.
PlayStation: configure PS5 and PS4 play time
Open the child’s Playtime Settings on PS5
- Sign in on the PS5 as the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Set or confirm the child’s time zone.
- Choose Playtime Settings.
- Turn play-time limits on, choose the playable hours, set the duration for each day or selected days, and save.
PlayStation provides two different kinds of time value: a window in which play is allowed and a duration for that day. For example, you can define an evening window and then cap the number of hours within it. The child receives a notification when the limit is nearly reached. When the limit expires, choose whether the console only notifies the child or logs the child out. A parent can also grant extra time or respond to a request when one is made.
Understand PS4 coverage
The same child-account play-time limits apply if the child uses both a PS5 and a PS4. You do not need to create a separate timer for each console. Check the child account and time zone if the behavior appears inconsistent between consoles.

Change the limit without rebuilding the family
Return to the same child profile under Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, open Playtime Settings, edit the day, hours or duration, and save. If the child reaches the limit early, use the parent response or extra-time option rather than changing the permanent schedule for every day.
PlayStation: restrict spending
Set a monthly spending limit on PS5
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child.
- Choose Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
- Enter the amount and save.
You can also manage it online through Account Management > Family Management > child > Edit > Monthly Spending Limit. Purchases made by the child on the child’s account draw from the family manager’s wallet. Sony sets the default monthly limit to 0, so no child-account spending is allowed unless the family manager changes that value. If you intend to allow no purchases, verify that the limit remains at zero after saving and after any account or region changes.
This is a monthly, account-based allowance, not a per-game approval prompt. A child who has a positive allowance can spend within that amount according to the account’s purchase permissions. Keep the spending setting separate from the play-time schedule when explaining the rules to the child.
Xbox: set console, device and game limits
Manage the family through Microsoft
Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the Microsoft family website as the parent account. In the website route, go to account.microsoft.com/family, select the child and choose Xbox. In the app, select the child and choose Windows/Xbox. The exact controls shown depend on the family member and connected devices.

Set a daily schedule and total hours
- In Microsoft Family Safety, select the child.
- Choose Windows/Xbox.
- Select a day to configure.
- Set the allowed time range and the total number of hours for that day.
- Repeat for other days that need different rules, then save.
On the website, the equivalent path is account.microsoft.com/family, select the child, choose Xbox, and set or edit limits by day. Xbox time counts while the child is signed in. Ask the child to sign out when they stop playing; leaving an account signed in can consume the available time even when no game is actively running.
Limit a particular game or app
For a narrower rule, create an app or game limit with a time amount and allowed hours. Microsoft says these limits can extend across connected Windows, Xbox and Android devices through Family Safety. Check the platforms offered in the current app when you configure the rule, because the available device choices can depend on the title and account.
A daily Xbox schedule answers “when may the child use the device?” An individual game limit answers “how long may this title or app be used?” Use both when a general bedtime is not enough—for example, a shorter limit for a single game while leaving educational apps available during the wider family window.
Restrict purchases with approval and account protection
Xbox’s Ask a Parent feature sends the parent an email when the child wants to buy a game or app and needs help funding the purchase. Review the request before approving it. To protect purchases made from the parent’s own account, create a passkey so the child cannot authorize a transaction simply by using an adult profile that is already signed in.

Install and connect the Parental Controls app
- Install the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on an iOS or Android device.
- Sign in with the parent Nintendo Account and follow the app’s instructions to link the console.
- Confirm that the Switch or Switch 2 has an internet connection so the app can exchange settings and activity information.
- Set the daily play-time limit.
- Set bedtime and the morning start time if play should stop overnight.
- Save the schedule and review the activity report showing which games were played and for how long.
Nintendo describes the app as offering its most extensive parental controls. The daily limit and bedtime controls are managed from the app rather than being equivalent account timers on the console. Use the activity view to check whether the configured rule matches actual play before adjusting the schedule.
Restrict purchases in the parent Nintendo Account
Open the parent Nintendo Account profile settings in a web browser to configure purchase restrictions. Nintendo’s FAQ says these restrictions are not set on the console and are not set in the smart-device Parental Controls app. Use the parent profile, not the child’s profile, and review the account region’s available options before saving.

Account for the shared-console limitation
Nintendo says most parental-control options are system-wide. The same play-time restrictions can therefore affect every person using that Switch or Switch 2. If several people share one console, agree on a schedule that works for the household and explain that the timer is attached to the system rather than behaving like a private child-account allowance. Nintendo lists play-time limits as app controls and purchase restrictions as Nintendo Account controls; check the account settings for any additional per-user options available in your region.

Switch 2 communication controls for younger users
On Switch 2, children under 16 and supervised users need controls configured through the Parental Controls app before using GameChat. The app can manage allowed chat friends, video-chat requests and GameChat history. These communication settings are separate from the play-time timer and purchase restrictions.
Check the result on the console
Test the child account, not the parent account
After saving any rule, sign in with the child’s account and test a short window or a low temporary limit. On PlayStation, confirm that the warning appears and that the selected end behavior—notification or logout—matches your choice. On Xbox, verify that the child is signed in to the Microsoft account in the family group and that signing out stops the session from consuming time. On Nintendo, check the app’s activity report and confirm that the shared-console behavior is acceptable to everyone who uses the system.
Check every adult payment path
- PlayStation: verify the child’s Monthly Spending Limit and protect the family manager’s wallet account.
- Xbox: keep Ask a Parent enabled for the child and add a passkey to the parent’s account.
- Nintendo: review purchase restrictions in the parent Nintendo Account browser settings; do not look only in the console or app.
Recheck after account or region changes
Family controls depend on account roles, console generation and region. If a menu disappears or a setting behaves differently after moving region, adding a console or changing an account’s role, open the current platform support instructions and verify the child is still attached to the intended family group.

“The timer is not stopping play”
- On PlayStation, confirm the limit is enabled, the time zone is correct and the selected child account is the one currently signed in.
- On Xbox, check that the child is signed in and that the schedule was set for the correct day. Remind the child to sign out when finished.
- On Nintendo, confirm the app is linked to the correct console and has an internet connection. Remember that the rule is generally system-wide.
“The child can still buy something”
- PlayStation: check that Monthly Spending Limit is still 0 if no spending is intended, and confirm the purchase is being attempted from the child account.
- Xbox: verify the request is routed through Ask a Parent and that the child is not using an unprotected adult account. Add or reset the parent passkey.
- Nintendo: open the parent Nintendo Account in a browser. The console and smart-device app are not the places Nintendo lists for purchase restrictions.
“One child’s rule affects everyone”
This is expected for many Nintendo controls because they apply to the console. On PlayStation and Xbox, check whether each person is using the correct account or family member. A shared adult profile can bypass child-account limits, so keep adult credentials and passkeys private.
“The app or menu looks different”
Official menu labels and feature availability can change. Identify the exact generation—PS4 or PS5, Switch or Switch 2—and confirm the account’s country or region. Then use the platform’s current support page for that combination rather than applying steps from another console.
A practical way to choose limits
Start with a predictable weekly schedule
Set different weekday and weekend values where the platform permits it. A fixed playable window is easier to follow than a rule that changes informally every night. On PlayStation and Xbox, combine the window with a daily duration so a child cannot use every permitted minute at the beginning of the evening. On Nintendo, pair the daily limit with bedtime and morning start time in the app.
Use the narrowest control that solves the problem
- Use a platform-wide daily schedule when the concern is total gaming time.
- Use an individual Xbox app or game limit when one title needs a shorter allowance.
- Use PlayStation’s notification-only ending when a child can stop reliably, and choose logout when the limit must be enforced technically.
- Use purchase approval or a zero allowance when the concern is unplanned spending, rather than trying to solve it with a play schedule.
Review activity before changing the rule
Look at the available activity information—PlayStation notifications and requests, Xbox Family Safety usage and Nintendo’s app report—before deciding whether the limit is too strict or too loose. Adjust one setting at a time, then test again on the child’s account.
