The setting controls how much disk space NVIDIA’s driver may use for compiled shaders. A suitable cache can reduce repeated shader-compilation stutter, but increasing it does not directly raise FPS and cannot fix every type of game hitch.
Set Shader Cache Size globally for all games
Use the global profile if you want the same shader-cache limit to apply by default to supported games and other 3D applications.

- Close the game you are troubleshooting.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel. You can usually find it by searching for it from the Windows Start menu.
- In the navigation pane, expand 3D Settings and select Manage 3D settings.
- Open the Global Settings tab.
- Find Shader Cache Size in the list of settings.
- Open the value menu and choose the cache limit you want.
- Click Apply.
NVIDIA documents this global workflow—selecting Manage 3D settings, choosing Global Settings, changing a feature, and applying it—in its instructions for setting a default 3D setting. The exact values shown can differ according to the graphics card, driver, and application.
Set a different cache size for one game
A per-game profile is the better choice when one title has unusually large shader-cache requirements or when you do not want to alter the default behavior of every game.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings.
- Select the Program Settings tab.
- Choose the game from the application list.
- If it is not listed, click Add and browse to the game’s executable file.
- Find Shader Cache Size.
- Select the desired value.
- Click Apply.
NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference explains that Program Settings can assign unique 3D settings to a selected application and apply them when that program launches. If the game uses a launcher, select the executable that actually renders the game where possible—not merely the launcher executable.

Which Shader Cache Size should you choose?
There is no single NVIDIA-certified best value for every PC. Games vary in how many shaders they compile and store. NVIDIA notes that demanding games may require several hundred megabytes and warns that a cache limit that is too small can remove older shaders, making them compile again later and potentially contributing to renewed stutter. Choose a limit that suits the games you play while leaving enough space on the drive.
| Option | When it makes sense | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Disabled | Only when deliberately testing whether shader caching is related to a problem. | It removes the cache as a source of reuse and can make repeated compilation more likely. |
| A small fixed limit | When drive space is severely constrained. | Several modern games may compete for the space, causing older cached shaders to be evicted. |
| A moderate or large fixed limit | Best for predictable disk usage while allowing commonly played games to retain compiled shaders. | The limit still needs to fit comfortably within the free space on the relevant drive. |
| Unlimited | When you prefer not to impose the selected fixed cap and have sufficient free disk space. | “Unlimited” does not create unlimited physical storage. The cache can still be constrained by available drive space and other system limits. |
As a practical starting point, avoid Disabled unless you are troubleshooting, avoid an unnecessarily tiny cap if you play several modern games, and use a moderate or large limit when you want stable disk usage without frequent eviction. Raising the value alone should not be expected to increase average frame rate.
Why a game may stutter after an NVIDIA driver update
NVIDIA states that installing a new graphics driver deletes the shader cache. Consequently, the first session after a driver update may stutter while the game and driver compile shaders again. That temporary behavior does not automatically mean that your selected cache size is wrong.

- Convenient Adjustment: Easy installtion, the support arm slides and locks in place to cool the graphics card directly in parallel or vertical with three high air flow RGB Fans, providing the easiest adjustment to allow you easily using various graphics card and PC case combinations.
After updating the driver, launch the affected game and allow it time to rebuild its shaders. Depending on the game, this may happen during a loading screen, while entering new areas, or during the first run through particular effects. Judge the setting after the cache has had an opportunity to repopulate rather than immediately after installation.

If Shader Cache Size is missing or has different options
Do not assume that a missing option means you made a mistake. NVIDIA says the features displayed in Control Panel depend on the graphics card and application. Driver versions and hardware configurations may therefore expose different settings or value lists.
Try these checks:
- Confirm that the NVIDIA graphics driver is installed correctly.
- Close the game before reopening NVIDIA Control Panel and changing the profile.
- Check whether you are editing Global Settings or the intended game under Program Settings.
- After clicking Apply, restart the game so it can use the updated profile.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver installation, give the game time to rebuild its cache before changing several settings at once.
If the setting is available but changing it has no noticeable effect, shader compilation may not be the main cause of the problem. Persistent stutter across several games can also result from the game engine’s compilation behavior, unstable CPU or GPU frame times, thermal throttling, background applications, storage pressure, or an incompatible driver. Shader Cache Size is one part of the rendering pipeline, not a universal stutter fix.

If the underlying issue may be the driver
If graphics problems started after a failed installation or you suspect missing or outdated Windows drivers, investigate the driver itself separately from the cache setting. Outbyte describes its Driver Updater as a tool that scans devices, identifies outdated or missing drivers, recommends official drivers, and offers backup and restore functions. It does not change NVIDIA’s Shader Cache Size setting and is not an NVIDIA Control Panel replacement; drivers can also be obtained directly from the graphics-card or PC manufacturer.
Windows and Linux use different controls
The NVIDIA Control Panel procedure above is for Windows. Do not copy those menu instructions into a Linux setup.
NVIDIA’s Linux OpenGL documentation describes a separate shader disk cache controlled with environment variables, including __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE, __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH, and __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE. NVIDIA also notes that cached shader binaries are specific to a driver version and may be recompiled after the driver changes. See NVIDIA’s Linux OpenGL environment-variable documentation for the Linux controls and syntax.
What changing the setting can—and cannot—do
- It can: give the driver more or less disk space for retaining compiled shaders.
- It may: reduce repeated shader-compilation stutter after shaders have been cached.
- It cannot guarantee: higher FPS, smoother frame times in every game, or a fix for stutter caused by CPU load, thermals, background processes, or the game engine.
- It will not prevent every rebuild: a driver update can delete the existing cache, requiring shaders to compile again.
For most Windows users, the sensible process is to leave caching enabled, select a moderate or large limit that fits the available drive space, and use a per-game profile when only one title needs different behavior. Change one variable at a time and test after the game has rebuilt its cache.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does NVIDIA Shader Cache Size do?
NVIDIA’s shader cache stores compiled shaders on disk so supported games can reuse them instead of compiling them again on every launch or during gameplay. This can reduce one source of repeated stutter, but it does not directly increase FPS or solve every frame-time problem.
What is the best Shader Cache Size setting?
Choose a moderate or large fixed limit if you want predictable disk usage, provided the drive has enough free space. Avoid Disabled unless testing, and avoid a very small limit if you play several modern games. Unlimited removes the selected fixed cap, but it does not mean the computer has unlimited storage.

Why does my game stutter after an NVIDIA driver update?
Usually, no. NVIDIA says installing a new driver deletes the cache, so the first session may stutter while shaders are compiled again. Let the game rebuild its cache before deciding that the setting is incorrect.
Does this method work on Linux?
The Control Panel option is a Windows workflow. Linux NVIDIA drivers use separate OpenGL shader-cache environment variables such as __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE; the Windows menu instructions do not apply directly.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Go to NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings, choose Global Settings or Program Settings, set Shader Cache Size, and click Apply. Use a limit large enough for the games you play without exhausting drive space; do not expect the change by itself to increase FPS or fix every kind of stutter.
