For constant-frame-rate video, multiply the output frame rate by two to get the GOP size: use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. With FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder, request a closed GOP as well.

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its guidance also specifies that at 30 fps, a 2-second interval is every 60 frames. These are platform configuration recommendations, not guarantees about every encoder’s emitted output. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and live streaming error messages.
What GOP size and keyframe interval mean
A GOP, or group of pictures, is the sequence of frames between keyframes. The keyframe interval may be specified as a duration or as a number of frames, depending on the encoder or service. For a constant-frame-rate output, the calculation is:
GOP frames = output frames per second × interval in seconds

So a 2-second target at 30 fps is 30 × 2 = 60 frames; at 60 fps it is 60 × 2 = 120 frames. If you change the output frame rate, recalculate the frame count. YouTube cautions that changing frame rate requires changing keyframe frequency.
Set the interval in FFmpeg with libx264
- Choose the actual output frame rate. Use the frame rate your encoded stream will deliver, rather than assuming it matches the source or capture device. If it changes, use the new rate in the GOP calculation.
- Set the GOP maximum and minimum. For a 30 fps output, add
-g 60 -keyint_min 60to thelibx264encoder options. For 60 fps, use-g 120 -keyint_min 120. In FFmpeg’s libx264 options,-gsets the maximum GOP size and-keyint_minsets the minimum keyframe spacing. - Request a closed GOP. Add
-flags +cgop. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. - Keep the rest of the streaming command appropriate to your setup. These are encoder options, not a complete command. Preserve the correct input, output frame rate, rate control, audio configuration, and RTMP or RTMPS destination and stream key for your stream.
- Check your encoder and build. The examples are for
libx264; do not assume the same option names or flags apply to another FFmpeg encoder. Consult the options for the selected encoder in the FFmpeg codecs documentation, then verify the output from your actual build.
Verify the stream before relying on it
Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and the event. If YouTube reports that keyframes are too far apart, check the output frame rate first and recalculate the interval from that rate. Also investigate ingestion errors, which YouTube notes can lead to an incorrectly observed GOP size.

Troubleshoot keyframe and GOP warnings
- YouTube says keyframes are too far apart: Confirm the encoded output frame rate and calculate the target as two seconds of frames. Do not exceed YouTube’s stated 4-second maximum.
- The warning appears after changing frame rate: Update the GOP frame count to match the new output rate; a value that was correct at 30 fps is not the same duration at 60 fps.
- The observed GOP size seems wrong: Check for ingestion errors and verify the emitted stream rather than relying only on the command-line options.
- The selected encoder does not honor the example as expected: The syntax shown is specifically for
libx264. Inspect the chosen encoder’s FFmpeg options, especially its controls for keyframe spacing and open or closed GOP behavior.
