What you need to change
BeamMP reads the server title and public-list text from two string settings in ServerConfig.toml:

The file uses TOML syntax. A minimal configuration looks like this:

Find the correct ServerConfig.toml
BeamMP creates ServerConfig.toml after the server has been started at least once. The file is written to the server’s working directory, which is not necessarily the folder containing the server executable. This distinction matters when a shortcut, service manager, container, or hosting panel starts BeamMP with a different working directory.
When the file is not visible
- Start the BeamMP server once using the normal method for your installation.
- Stop it cleanly after the initial files are generated.
- Search the directory used as the process working directory for
ServerConfig.toml. - If you launch through a script or service, inspect that launcher’s working-directory setting rather than assuming the executable’s directory is correct.
Do not create a second copy in a convenient folder and expect BeamMP to read it. Editing the wrong copy produces the common symptom that the old name continues to appear.

Change the name and description in the file
Use this procedure whenever you control the server files directly.
- Stop the BeamMP server before editing its configuration.
- Make a backup copy of
ServerConfig.tomlso you can restore the previous settings if a syntax error is introduced. - Open the file in a plain-text editor.
- Locate the
[General]heading. - Replace the text between the quotation marks on the
NameandDescriptionlines. - Save the file as
ServerConfig.toml, preserving the.tomlextension and the existing text encoding. - Start the server again. Configuration changes take effect after the restart.
For example:

TOML treats the value as a string only when it is written as a valid quoted string. If your text itself needs a quotation mark, use the escaping rules supported by TOML rather than adding an unmatched quote.
Make the server appear in the public list
A correct name and description do not make a private server public. The Private setting controls whether the server is listed publicly. Set it to false when you intend players to find the server in the public list:

Private = falseWith Private = true, the server does not appear in the public server list. You can still use a private server for an invited group, but changing only Name or Description will not change that visibility decision.

Format BeamMP server-list text
BeamMP documents formatting codes that can be placed before the text they affect. They are useful for emphasizing a short name or structuring a longer description.

Styled server name
Put the style and colour codes immediately before the words they should affect:

Private = falseHere, ^l requests bold text and ^2 applies one of BeamMP’s documented colours. If you apply formatting and then want later text to return to normal, insert ^r before that later text.
Multi-line description
The ^p code creates a line break in descriptions. It is not documented for server names, so keep a name on one line and reserve line breaks for the description:

Description = "^lRules^r^pNo wrecking^pRespect other drivers^pEvents every Saturday"Formatting is part of the stored string. If a code is typed incorrectly, appears in a place where it is unsupported, or is not recognised by the client version displaying the list, the text may not look as intended. Test a short sample first when designing a heavily formatted listing.
Stay within the documented limits
The BeamMP documentation lists backend limits of 250 characters for Name and 1,000 characters for Description. The documentation does not state a publication year for these limits, so treat them as the current documented limits rather than as a dated historical guarantee.

Shorter text is usually easier to scan in a game server browser. Put the information players need to decide quickly—driving style, event type, major rules, or required content—near the beginning. Use ^p to separate distinct points instead of relying on one dense paragraph.
Formatting codes consume space in the configuration string even though they may not occupy visible width in the list. Leave headroom below the documented maximum when using many codes, and remove decorative text first if a value is rejected or truncated.

BEAMMP_DESCRIPTION="Welcome to the server"The documented variables are BEAMMP_NAME and BEAMMP_DESCRIPTION. String and numeric environment-variable values must be supplied as strings. When present, these variables can override the corresponding values in ServerConfig.toml.
When an environment variable is the reason your edit is ignored
- Check the launch environment used by the server process, not only the shell in which you edited the file.
- Look for
BEAMMP_NAMEorBEAMMP_DESCRIPTIONin a startup script, service definition, container configuration, or hosting panel. - Remove or update the variable if the TOML value should be authoritative.
- Restart the BeamMP server after changing either the variable or the file.
If the old name returns every time the server starts, an environment override is a likely explanation. On a v3.2.0-or-newer installation, verify the effective launch settings before repeatedly editing the TOML file.
Configure the values through a hosted panel
BeamMP’s VPS guidance describes hosting panels that expose fields for an AuthKey, server name, and description. A provider may not give you direct access to ServerConfig.toml. In that case, enter the values in the panel’s Name and Description fields and use the panel’s restart control.
Formatting rules remain the same when a panel is used: enter codes such as ^l, ^2, and ^p in the field where they are supported. The panel may write those values to the generated configuration or provide them through the launch environment, so the provider’s displayed fields are the appropriate place to make changes.

If a panel offers both text fields and an environment-variable section, check which one has precedence in that provider’s setup. BeamMP allows the documented environment variables to override TOML values, so a variable can make a file edit appear ineffective.

Troubleshoot a name or description that does not change
The file is missing
Start the server once, stop it, and search the process working directory. Do not assume the executable’s folder is the configuration folder. A launcher or service can set a different working directory.
The old text is still displayed
- Confirm that you edited the file used by the running instance.
- Check that the new values are under
[General], not under a similarly named section. - Verify that the file was saved with the
.tomlextension. - Restart the server after saving.
- On v3.2.0 or newer, check for
BEAMMP_NAMEandBEAMMP_DESCRIPTIONoverrides.
The server is not in the public list
Check Private = false. A private server will not be listed publicly regardless of how polished its name or description is. If the setting is already false, restart after saving and refresh the server list in the game client.
Formatting appears as plain text or behaves unexpectedly
- Check that each code begins with a caret, such as
^lor^p. - Use
^ponly in descriptions, where BeamMP documents it for line breaks. - Place a code before the text it should affect.
- Use
^rto reset a style before subsequent text. - Test a short value before adding several styles and colour codes.
The server fails to start after editing
Restore the backup, then reapply the change carefully. The most common avoidable mistake is invalid TOML syntax: a missing quote, an extra quote, or a damaged section heading. Keep the value on one line unless you are deliberately using the documented ^p description code; do not insert an actual unescaped line break inside a quoted TOML string.
The text is rejected or cut short
Compare the value with the documented 250-character Name limit and 1,000-character Description limit. Remove decorative wording and excess formatting codes first. A concise listing also gives players the important information sooner.
Recommended editing workflow
This sequence reduces the risk of losing a working configuration:
- Record the current Name, Description, and Private values.
- Stop the server and back up
ServerConfig.toml. - Make one change at a time, starting with plain text.
- Check the quoted TOML strings and section heading.
- Save, start the server, and confirm the effective listing.
- Add formatting codes only after the plain-text version works.
- If the displayed value differs from the file, inspect the launch environment for BeamMP overrides.
For a hosted server, use the same logic through the provider panel: save the Name and Description fields, restart, then investigate provider-side environment settings if the result does not match.

Private = trueThe last example can still have a useful internal name and description, but it is intentionally excluded from the public server list by Private = true.
Quick verification checklist

Once these checks pass, the server list should use the new title and, when the server is public, the new description.
