Set the public name with the ServerName key inside the [Engine.GameReplicationInfo] section of the active Killing Floor 2 server configuration. On a self-managed Windows server, edit KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini; a LinuxGSM installation normally uses its per-server LinuxServer-KFGame.ini. Stop the server before saving, then start it again. If you rent a managed server, use the provider’s Server Name field instead of relying on a manual file edit.
The setting that controls your KF2 server’s public name
Killing Floor 2 reads the displayed server title from an INI entry named ServerName. The entry belongs under [Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. A working configuration looks like this:

ServerName=My Community KF2 Server
ShortName=MyKF2ServerName is the long name players see in the in-game server browser. ShortName is a separate, nearby identifier. You can leave ShortName unchanged, or give it a shorter label if you want both values to reflect your community name.
The exact file depends on how the server is installed. Do not edit a generic template, another server instance, or an inactive copy of the configuration. The file that matters is the generated configuration used by the instance you actually start.

Before changing the name
- Identify the installation type. Windows dedicated servers, LinuxGSM deployments, and managed hosts expose the setting in different places.
- Start the server once if its configuration has not been generated. A first launch creates the files you need to edit on a self-managed installation.
- Stop the server before editing. Some distributions can regenerate or overwrite values during startup, and LinuxGSM specifically warns that edits can be overridden if configuration is changed while the server is running.
- Keep a backup of the active INI file. Copy it before making the change so you can restore the previous configuration if another setting is accidentally altered.
- Change only the intended key. Preserve the section header and the equals-sign format; the name belongs after
ServerName=, not in a separate launcher option.
Windows dedicated server: change PCServer-KFGame.ini
1. Generate the configuration files
Launch the dedicated server once. The initial run creates the KFGameConfig directory and its server configuration files. If you have never started this instance, the expected INI may not exist yet.
2. Stop the server completely
Exit the dedicated-server process before opening the configuration for editing. Waiting until the process has stopped prevents the running server or its startup routine from replacing your changes.

Open KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini in a plain-text editor. The path is relative to the dedicated-server installation directory. If more than one KF2 server is installed, check that you are in the directory for the instance you intend to rename.
4. Find the replication-information section
Search the file for:
[Engine.GameReplicationInfo]Within that section, locate the line beginning with:
ServerName=Twistor’s Steam setup guide describes the default line as ServerName=Killing Floor 2 Server and instructs administrators to replace the text after the equals sign. Leave the key itself intact and replace only the current value.
5. Enter the public name
For example:
[Engine.GameReplicationInfo]
ServerName=My Community KF2 ServerYou may also change the adjacent short identifier:
[Engine.GameReplicationInfo]
ServerName=My Community KF2 Server
ShortName=MyKF2Changing ShortName is optional. It does not replace ServerName; the two settings serve different purposes.

6. Save and restart
Save PCServer-KFGame.ini, then start the dedicated server again. After the restart, refresh the in-game server browser. The Windows setup guidance says the restarted server should appear there with the new name.
LinuxGSM: edit the per-server Linux configuration
LinuxGSM installations commonly keep each server in its own generated directory rather than using the Windows filename. A typical layout is:
/home/user/serverfiles/KFGame/Config/kf2serverThe exact home directory, instance name, and installation root can differ. Treat that path as an example of the per-server location, not a universal fixed path.
1. Stop the LinuxGSM instance
Stop the specific KF2 server instance before opening its configuration. LinuxGSM documentation warns that configuration edits can be overridden on restart if the server is running while you make them.
2. Open the generated Linux INI
Inside the active per-server configuration directory, edit the generated LinuxServer-KFGame.ini. Do not change a default file belonging to a different instance or a template that the running server does not load.
3. Edit the same section and key
Find [Engine.GameReplicationInfo], then change the value of ServerName:

ServerName=My Community KF2 ServerIf desired, update ShortName in the same section. Keep the section header, key spelling, and equals sign unchanged.
4. Save, start, and verify
Save the file while the instance is stopped, start the LinuxGSM server, and refresh the in-game browser. If the old name returns, the most likely explanation is that the edit was made in the wrong per-server directory or that a startup-managed value replaced the manual edit. Use the troubleshooting checks below before changing other files.

A managed provider may generate the startup configuration from its panel. In that situation, a direct INI edit can disappear when the service restarts. Use the panel’s authoritative server-name setting instead.
Typical panel workflow
- Stop the Killing Floor 2 server from the provider’s control panel.
- Open Files, then Config Files, if the panel exposes file-based settings.
- Open the provider’s Killing Floor 2 Server Settings page.
- Change the Server Name field to the desired public name.
- Save the setting so the panel can write or regenerate the startup configuration.
- Start the server and refresh the in-game server list.
Shockbyte documents this field as the server name shown on the in-game server list. The practical distinction is important: on a self-managed server, the active INI is normally your source of truth; on a managed server, the provider’s Server Name control can be the source that rewrites the INI during startup.

Why the name keeps reverting
You edited a template instead of the active file
Multiple INI files can exist in a server installation. Confirm that the file is inside the directory for the instance you launch. On LinuxGSM, use that instance’s generated per-server directory; on Windows, use the KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini belonging to the dedicated server you run.

The key is outside the correct section
The setting is associated with [Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. Move the line into that section if it was pasted elsewhere. Also check that the active file contains one intended ServerName entry rather than several conflicting copies.

The server was still running during the edit
Stop the process before saving. A running distribution can rewrite configuration, and LinuxGSM explicitly cautions that edits may be overridden on restart when made at the wrong time.
A hosting panel is regenerating the file
If a managed host restores the old value after every restart, set the name in the panel’s Server Name field. Allow the panel to save its configuration, then restart from the panel instead of repeatedly changing the generated file by hand.
The browser is showing cached information
After a successful restart, refresh the in-game server browser. Do not judge the result from a list that was open before the server came back online.
A precise verification checklist
- The server was launched at least once, so its generated configuration exists.
- The server process was stopped before the edit.
- You opened the active instance’s file, not a default template or another server’s directory.
- The line is under
[Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. - The value is written as
ServerName=Your chosen name. - There is not an unintended second
ServerNameentry in the active file. - You saved the file or, for managed hosting, saved the panel’s Server Name field.
- You restarted the server after saving.
- You refreshed the in-game browser and checked the correct server instance.
Choosing between ServerName and ShortName
Use ServerName for the recognizable public title players should see when browsing. Use ShortName only when you also need a separate abbreviated label. For example, ServerName=My Community KF2 Server and ShortName=MyKF2 make the long display name and short identifier intentionally different. If you do not need a short identifier, changing only ServerName is sufficient.
Neither setting is a replacement for the other. Editing ShortName alone does not accomplish the normal request to rename the server in the public browser.
What to do when you move the server
The value itself is portable text, but the path to the file is not. A Windows installation uses the Windows-named configuration file, while LinuxGSM uses a generated Linux configuration in the destination instance’s own directory. After moving or copying a server, verify which configuration the new installation actually loads instead of assuming that the old path remains valid.

For a managed host, recreate the name through the destination provider’s panel. A copied INI may not control startup if the new host generates settings from its own account or service configuration.

Where is ServerName in PCServer-KFGame.ini?
Open KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini, search for [Engine.GameReplicationInfo], and inspect the ServerName= line in that section.
Can the name be changed without editing an INI?
Yes, when a managed host provides a Killing Floor 2 settings page. Stop the service, edit the panel’s Server Name field, save, and restart. A self-managed installation normally requires editing its active generated INI.
Why is the name correct in the file but wrong in-game?
Check the active instance, section placement, duplicate keys, restart status, and browser refresh in that order. On a managed host, check the panel value because it may regenerate the file.
Should ShortName match the public name?
Only if you want it to. It is a separate optional identifier; the public display title is controlled by ServerName.
