YouTube documents encoder-based streaming and recurring broadcasts, but that does not guarantee one indefinitely uninterrupted live event or a single archive for it. This guide covers a do-it-yourself setup and a cloud alternative for looping uploaded videos.
What you need for a 24/7 YouTube stream
- A YouTube channel that meets the platform’s livestream eligibility requirements.
- A video source: for example, a game feed, a camera or production setup, or pre-recorded video played by an encoder.
- An encoder, either software or hardware, that supports your chosen YouTube ingestion protocol.
- A sustained upload connection with enough capacity for the stream and any backup feed.
- An operator plan for monitoring, recovery, and recording if preserving the full program matters.
YouTube describes software encoders as well as professional-grade hardware encoders, the latter recommended for higher-production-value events. Dedicated hardware is not a universal prerequisite. For a gaming stream with overlays, microphones, or other connected equipment, choose an encoder and production setup that can handle those sources. YouTube’s computer streaming tips explain the platform’s encoder options.
Check channel eligibility first
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The same guidance states that users must be at least 16 to livestream. These are channel-access conditions, not encoder settings. Check eligibility before scheduling a long-running broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- Choose the Stream workflow. Create a stream or select one you have scheduled.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s controls.
- Configure the encoder’s video, audio, and protocol settings, then start sending the feed.
- Wait for the incoming video preview in Live Control Room. Check it, then select Go live.
- To end the broadcast, end it from the control room and stop the encoder.
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. For a 24/7 channel, treat this as preparation guidance for launch or a maintenance window—not as a requirement to restart every 15 minutes. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and streaming tips.

Choose an ingestion protocol
| Protocol | What to know | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | RTMP delivered over TLS/SSL. Reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and enter it, along with the stream key, in an encoder that supports RTMPS. | A compatible encoder when you want the documented encrypted RTMP path. |
| HLS | A separate option for compatible encoders. YouTube specifies transport-stream segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments. | Encoders and workflows that support YouTube’s HLS requirements and can accommodate higher latency. |
Use the protocol your encoder supports and follow YouTube’s instructions for that path. For details, see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and HLS setup requirements.
Set bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframes
Choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder can produce and your measured upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s encoder settings page provides recommended H.264 bitrate ranges by output format; for AV1 and H.265, it lists minimum and maximum ranges. Use the values for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set that in the encoder if it exposes a keyframe or GOP interval option. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio before making the stream public. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table contains the current figures.
Plan bandwidth and resilience
The upload connection must carry the combined bitrate of the primary stream and any backup stream. YouTube recommends allowing 20% additional upload bandwidth beyond that combined bitrate. Measure the connection under realistic conditions and leave that margin available; a connection that only reaches the target bitrate in an ideal test is a weak foundation for an always-on stream. YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its advice supports testing and failover planning, not a guarantee that any backup arrangement will prevent interruption. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and reliability planning.

Test before you leave it running
Test with material similar to the real program. For a gaming channel, include representative motion, game audio, microphone levels, overlays, and scene changes. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify that viewers can access the stream from the channel and watch pages and on mobile devices.
- Listen for clipping, missing audio, and unintended silence; check that game and microphone levels are balanced.
- Look for dropped or corrupted video, incorrect aspect ratio, and overlays or text that are hard to read.
- Confirm the stream remains stable at the chosen bitrate and output format.
- If a backup encoder is part of your plan, test the changeover. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
- Write down who monitors the stream, how to restart the encoder, and how to regain access to the channel if the usual operator is unavailable.
YouTube recommends testing, preview checks, monitoring, and failover checks; these checks help identify problems but do not establish that any encoder or service guarantees uptime. See YouTube’s testing and monitoring advice.

Understand recurring broadcasts and archive limits
For recurring events, Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes creating one liveStream resource and binding broadcast resources to it so events can reuse stream settings. In that API model, only one event is live at a time. This is a way to manage separate broadcasts; it is not evidence that one event can continue indefinitely. See Google’s guide to broadcasts and streams.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its statement does not promise one automatic archive for a stream that exceeds 12 hours. If you need a complete recording of a continuous program, plan and test a separate local or external recording strategy and check YouTube’s current limitations before relying on an exact restart or archive workflow. YouTube’s encoder guide states the under-12-hour archive limit.

Handle copyright and reused-content risks
A 24/7 schedule does not change your responsibility to have rights to the material you broadcast. For a gaming stream, consider the game publisher’s streaming policy, licensed music in the game, and any third-party videos, artwork, or audio you add. A game’s inclusion of a song does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it. Repeatedly looping material also does not make it original or licensed. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules before building a channel around pre-recorded or repetitive content; the sources linked above explain the live-stream mechanics, not whether a particular program is permitted or eligible for monetization.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or its destination details do not match the selected stream. | Confirm the encoder is running and that the copied stream URL and key belong to the selected stream. Check that the encoder supports the configured protocol. |
| Stream health degrades or the feed drops | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the primary and backup bitrates. | Measure the upload connection, lower the output bitrate or quality if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth margin beyond the combined bitrate. |
| Video arrives with more delay than expected | HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. | Check which protocol the encoder is using and whether its latency fits the use case. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete for a long broadcast | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic archive scope. | Do not assume an event longer than 12 hours will become one automatic archive. Use and test a separate recording plan if full preservation matters. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Someone else may be able to send content using the key. | Reset the key in YouTube’s controls, update the encoder with the new key, and avoid sharing it publicly. |
