To run prerecorded Sikh kirtan continuously on YouTube, prepare audio you have permission to broadcast, send it through an encoder using a YouTube stream URL and key, preview the feed, then monitor playback and recovery. For a do-it-yourself setup, a computer and a reliable connection must remain available to run the encoder. YouTube’s guidance warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so keep a separate recording if you need a replay.
What you need before you go live
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room.
- A computer running encoder software and a connection capable of sending a continuous feed. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not specify minimum computer hardware or a required bitrate; choose encoder settings appropriate to your connection and test them before launch.
- A continuous playlist of audio files that you are authorized to broadcast.
- A plan for monitoring, recovery, stream-key security, and any separate archive you need.
Clear the recordings and compositions first
Do not assume that devotional music is automatically free to stream, or that permission to listen to or upload a recording includes permission for a continuous public livestream. Rights can be separate for the sound recording (the master) and the underlying musical composition. Confirm permission for the actual tracks, intended platform, territory, broadcast duration, and any archiving or monetization. Keep written permission and note any conditions. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; it says an identified match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even with a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for YouTube to recognize the authorization. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and explanation of music rights describe these issues.
If the stream is operated in India
India’s Copyright Act, Section 52(1)(za), addresses performance or communication of works and sound recordings “in the course of any bona fide religious ceremony.” The Copyright Office page was last updated 16 July 2026; a related public notice is dated 27 August 2019. Those materials do not establish that a prerecorded stream available continuously online automatically qualifies as a religious ceremony. The result may depend on the circumstances, territory, rights, and use; seek advice from a qualified adviser or relevant rights organization for your specific stream. Do not apply this India-specific provision to other countries. Copyright Office exceptions · Copyright Office public notice, 27 August 2019
Other jurisdictions
Licensing rules differ by location and use. For example, UK government guidance says a licence is usually needed to play live or recorded music in public and points readers to the relevant licensing body. That is UK-specific guidance, not a universal rule for online broadcasts. UK government music licensing guidance

Prepare a playlist that can run unattended
- Make an inventory of every track and identify the source recording and relevant rights holders.
- Build an ordered playlist using only cleared audio. Choose a playback method that can repeat the list continuously; the cited YouTube instructions cover the encoder workflow, not a recommended playlist application.
- Listen through the playlist, including the transition between tracks and the point where it returns to the beginning. Check that playback does not stop at the end, that levels are reasonably consistent, and that there are no unintended gaps or abrupt cuts.
- Keep a copy of the playlist and rights records accessible to the people responsible for the stream.
Create and start the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe this workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in public screenshots. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Configure the encoder to take the playlist’s audio as its input. Select video and audio settings the computer and connection can sustain, then test them. The cited sources do not establish a particular bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or minimum computer specification for this use, so do not rely on an untested preset.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Use the incoming preview to confirm that audio is present and that the correct stream is selected.
- Check the viewer-facing watch page and confirm its visibility and schedule. When the preview and page are ready, start the public stream using Live Control Room’s controls.
YouTube recommends preparing in advance, checking the preview, and verifying that viewers can reach the event. Its stream settings page covers the encoder connection; YouTube Help also advises monitoring stream quality and testing backup-encoder failover.
Keep the feed running and plan for interruptions
A local encoder depends on the computer, playback process, power, and network continuing to work. Assign someone to check that audio is playing and that YouTube still shows the feed as live. YouTube recommends monitoring quality and testing backup-encoder failover, but its guidance does not promise that one computer, connection, or stream will remain online indefinitely. Before launch, rehearse what the operator will do if playback stops, the network disconnects, power fails, or YouTube drops the feed. Keep an independent local recording if you need a reliable copy. Do not depend on one 24/7 stream for its archive
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived and streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is current platform guidance accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a usable replay. A single continuous 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a dependable archive. Keep a local archive backup if the recording matters. If you are considering shorter scheduled segments, test how your chosen encoder and playlist workflow handles segment endings and restarts before relying on them. Troubleshooting common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The encoder is not sending to the event’s stream URL, or the stream key is incorrect or belongs to another event. | Check the URL and key in Live Control Room against the values entered in the encoder. Keep the key private; replace it if it has been exposed. |
| The preview has no audio or the wrong audio | The encoder is receiving the wrong playback input, or the playlist is not playing. | Check the selected audio source, start playlist playback, and verify the sound in the incoming preview before starting the public stream. |
| The playlist stops or leaves a gap | The playback source may stop at the end instead of repeating, or a transition may not behave as expected. | Test the complete playlist and its return to the beginning before launch; use a playback method configured for continuous repeat. |
| The stream is interrupted or replaced | YouTube may have identified third-party content; a licensed channel may not be allowlisted in Content ID. | Review YouTube’s live copyright notice and contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting. Do not assume that a licence automatically prevents an automated interruption. |
| The stream goes offline after a computer, power, or network problem | A local encoder cannot send while its machine or connection is unavailable. | Restore the playback and encoder, reconnect to the stream, and follow the recovery procedure tested in advance. Test backup-encoder failover, as YouTube recommends. |
| No full replay appears for the continuous stream | A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in YouTube’s archive. | Use the independent local recording as the archive. Do not treat the 24/7 YouTube stream as the only copy. |
