How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream with AWS Elemental MediaLive

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with AWS Elemental MediaLive, you need more than a MediaLive channel: you need a continuous source, a MediaLive input and channel configured to process it, and an output connected to YouTube Live. Create the YouTube stream in Live Control Room, configure the AWS workflow, start the source and channel in the order required by the input type, then check YouTube’s incoming preview. MediaLive handles ingest, transcoding and delivery; it does not create or supply the video source.

What you need for a 24/7 stream

Think of the setup as three connected parts: an upstream source supplies the picture and sound, a MediaLive input and channel ingest and process that feed, and a configured output sends it to YouTube. For continuous operation, all three parts—and the network connections between them—must remain available.

  • A continuous source: for example, a camera or production system, an always-on computer encoder such as OBS, or another live feed. Decide how it will keep producing content during unattended hours.
  • A YouTube Live stream: its server URL and stream key are entered in the MediaLive output configuration.
  • A MediaLive input and channel: the input receives the source; the channel processes it and sends the output.
  • An availability and cost plan: account for the source, network, MediaLive resources, YouTube connection, maintenance and any recording you need.

You do not need OBS specifically. It is one possible upstream encoder; MediaLive still needs a source whether that source is OBS, hardware, a production system or another feed.

Create the YouTube Live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.
  2. On the Stream tab, create a stream or load an existing one.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Enter these in the MediaLive output configuration for the YouTube destination.
  4. Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream, so do not expose it in screenshots, logs, source code or public configuration.

YouTube’s channel-specific eligibility and setup requirements can change; check the current Live Control Room guidance for the channel you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder instructions also describe connecting the encoder and starting the stream, but the exact live-control steps depend on the workflow.

Choose how the source reaches MediaLive

MediaLive can use push or pull ingest. Choose based on network reachability, which side can initiate a connection, and how you will manage credentials and firewall rules.

RTMP push input

With push, the upstream encoder sends its feed to endpoints generated when you create the MediaLive input. For a public RTMP push input, attach an input security group that permits the source’s public IP address or addresses. Use a narrow allowlist of known egress IPs where possible; avoid allowing broader access than the workflow needs.

A standard-class input has two destinations, and the source must send to both. A single-pipeline input uses one destination. Use the actual endpoints generated in your AWS account, not example endpoint or IP values from a tutorial. The source must already be sending when a channel using an RTMP push input starts.

RTMP pull input

With pull, MediaLive connects to the upstream RTMP source URL or URLs. This can fit a source that exposes a reachable endpoint and is not configured to push to MediaLive. Confirm network reachability and any credentials required by the source. Push is not mandatory for every workflow.

Create the MediaLive input and channel

  1. Create the input. Select an input type that matches the source’s connection method. For RTMP push, configure the input security group and give the source the generated destination endpoint or endpoints. For RTMP pull, configure the reachable source URL or URLs and any needed credentials.
  2. Create the channel. Attach the input and configure the processing and output settings. Choose an output group supported by the YouTube ingest path you intend to use.
  3. Set video and audio deliberately. Match the source format where practical, and select codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings and keyframe cadence that meet the current YouTube ingest requirements and the source’s actual capabilities. Do not copy settings from an old example as though they were universal current recommendations.
  4. Configure the YouTube destination. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the output configuration. Check that the destination, output group and credentials match the stream you created in Live Control Room.
  5. Review the whole path. Confirm that the source can reach the input, the channel is attached to the intended input, the output is directed to YouTube, and any required firewall rules allow the connection.

AWS’s Public Sector walkthrough demonstrates an RTMP(S) output to YouTube. AWS also published a separate HLS ingest example for a specific 4K/HDR workflow. That 2021 example recommends an HLS output group for that particular path; it is not the only way to stream ordinary content. Recheck current AWS console options and YouTube’s current protocol requirements before using an example configuration.

Choose an output protocol and quality

RTMP(S) and HLS are not interchangeable settings to choose by habit. Use the output path that matches the YouTube ingest workflow and the codecs, packaging and resolution requirements for your stream. The AWS RTMP(S) example is a general YouTube output illustration; its HLS example addresses a specialized 4K/HDR case. Check the current YouTube and AWS requirements for the workflow you intend to run.

Do not treat the settings in that dated HLS example as a current general-purpose bitrate table: it lists 4K, 59.94 fps and 20 Mbps for its specific 2021 configuration. Those are example values, not universal recommendations. Set bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio and keyframe cadence using current YouTube encoder guidance and the actual source format. The right target also depends on what the source can sustain without drops or unstable quality.

Decide whether to use one or two MediaLive pipelines

A single-pipeline channel is simpler but has less MediaLive pipeline redundancy. AWS recommends two-pipeline processing for resilience: the pipelines work independently and perform identical processing. That redundancy covers MediaLive processing, not every part of the broadcast chain.

A standard two-pipeline design needs two independent upstream sources and two downstream outputs. If the source, network link or destination is still shared, it can remain a single point of failure. Plan the full path—including source generation, network, input, channel and YouTube outputs—against the availability you need and the additional recurring cost.

Start the source, channel and YouTube stream

  1. Check that the source is producing the intended video and audio, and that its network path to the MediaLive input is available.
  2. For RTMP push, start the upstream source before starting the MediaLive channel; AWS’s push-input guidance says the source must already be sending when the channel starts. For other input types and output configurations, follow the start order appropriate to that workflow rather than assuming this sequence applies universally.
  3. Start the MediaLive channel and confirm that its state reaches Running.
  4. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for an incoming preview and check picture, sound and stream health before beginning the public broadcast.
  5. Use the relevant YouTube live controls to start the broadcast when the preview is ready. The control sequence can vary by workflow.

For an unattended channel, test the complete path before relying on it: a healthy source alone does not establish that MediaLive is processing or YouTube is receiving the feed.

Plan for continuity, recording and cost

Continuity beyond the MediaLive channel

Monitor the source, network, credentials, MediaLive channel and YouTube destination throughout the broadcast. Decide who or what will respond if the source disconnects, YouTube rejects the feed, a credential changes, or the channel needs maintenance. MediaLive pipeline redundancy cannot compensate for a failed shared source or network link.

Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast becomes one complete archive

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous stream longer than 12 hours should not be assumed to produce one complete automatic archive. If you need a full recording, arrange separate recording or plan how to segment and restart the broadcast.

Estimate AWS charges from the actual configuration

MediaLive charges depend on the resources and settings used. AWS documents input charges for every input attached to a running channel, even if an input is inactive or not receiving content. Output charges depend on output configuration, and standard-class and single-pipeline channels have different rates. Idle resources can also incur charges.

Estimate the actual region, codec, resolution, frame rate, input and output counts, channel class and add-ons using AWS’s current MediaLive pricing information and pricing tools. A historical AWS Public Sector tutorial gave an example of $1.26 per hour for a 1080p, multi-destination setup in selected US regions, published around 2020. That is not a current estimate for your configuration. No single current dollar figure applies to every 24/7 MediaLive workflow.

Common problems and fixes

The channel will not start with an RTMP push input

Likely cause: the source is not sending yet, is using an incorrect destination, or cannot reach one or both generated endpoints. Fix: verify the account-generated endpoints and network path, confirm the source is pushing before channel start, and, for a standard-class input, check that it sends to both destinations.

MediaLive cannot receive the RTMP push feed

Likely cause: the input security group does not permit the source’s public egress IP, or the source’s IP has changed. Fix: verify the source’s current public egress IP and update the allowlist to include only the required address or addresses.

YouTube Live Control Room shows no incoming preview

Likely cause: the output is not reaching the intended stream, the server URL or key is incorrect, or the channel has not reached a working state. Fix: confirm the channel is Running, check the configured YouTube destination and key, and verify that the source-to-input path is active. Keep the key private while checking configuration.

The feed connects but video or audio is rejected or unstable

Likely cause: the output settings do not match the source or current YouTube ingest requirements. Fix: check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings and keyframe cadence against current YouTube guidance and the source’s actual format. Do not rely on values from the 2021 HLS example as universal settings.

The stream stops when the computer or source is turned off

Likely cause: MediaLive is receiving that computer’s feed, so the computer is part of the live-source chain. Fix: keep the encoder and its network path operating for the required duration, or use another continuously available source. MediaLive transcodes and delivers incoming content; it does not replace the source.

The broadcast runs longer than expected, but the recording is incomplete

Likely cause: the stream exceeded YouTube’s stated 12-hour automatic-archive threshold. Fix: use a separate recording plan or a deliberate segment-and-restart strategy when a complete archive matters.
