Recommended Free Tools
Short answer: both OBS Studio and XSplit Broadcaster are verified software encoders for YouTube Live, but neither is established as more reliable for an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. Choose OBS for its free, open-source, cross-platform setup; choose XSplit if its Windows workflow and features suit you and its current license terms meet your needs. In either case, a desktop encoder depends on a working computer, network, configuration, monitoring, and recovery plan.
OBS vs XSplit at a glance
| Decision | OBS Studio | XSplit Broadcaster |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems listed by the official product site | Windows, macOS, and Linux | Windows |
| License and price model | Free and open source | Free tier plus monthly, yearly, and lifetime paid tiers; prices and terms can change |
| Free-tier limits | The OBS Project describes OBS as free to use. | Free use supports up to 720p without a watermark; above that, a small logo is added. XSplit’s support FAQ also describes restrictions including no commercial use and a maximum of four scenes. Confirm current terms before relying on the free tier. |
| Production workflow | Real-time capture and mixing, scenes, transitions, configurable settings, and an API for community plugins and scripts | Drag-and-drop composition, custom RTMP, multiple outputs, built-in chat plugins, and OBS scene import are listed; some features depend on license tier |

Which encoder should you choose?
Choose OBS Studio when flexibility and platform support matter
OBS is the clearer fit if you need Windows, macOS, or Linux support, want to avoid a software license fee, or value open-source extensibility and configurable scenes. Its being free does not make a particular computer, connection, or stream configuration suitable for uninterrupted operation; test the complete setup.
Choose XSplit when its Windows workflow fits your production
XSplit may suit a Windows-based workflow if its built-in production tools match what you need. Before committing, check the current license tier against your intended resolution, branding, commercial use, scene count, and any specific feature you depend on. The product’s terms and prices can change.
Do not choose on an assumed uptime advantage
The reviewed product information does not show that OBS or XSplit is more reliable for continuous streaming. YouTube’s verified-encoder listing confirms compatibility, not round-the-clock uptime. Reliability depends on the whole chain: the computer staying powered and responsive, the encoder and configuration, upload bandwidth, and someone or something able to notice and respond to a failure.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up and test either encoder for YouTube Live
- Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and retrieve its stream key and server settings. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address: keep it private and enter it only in the intended encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select a supported video codec—H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1—and a resolution and frame rate your system and connection can sustain. YouTube’s current guidance supports up to 60 fps and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, with constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval. Use a 2-second interval; YouTube says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose a bitrate for the exact codec and output. For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance gives these examples: 1080p60, 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; 1080p30, 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; 720p60, 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are resolution- and frame-rate-specific examples, not one setting for every stream. Check YouTube’s current table for your chosen codec and output.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube advises that total stream bitrate fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. A speed test alone does not prove a connection will remain stable for a continuous stream.
- Test the real production. Run a representative test using the scenes, audio, movement, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and network you intend to use. Preview the stream in Live Control Room and check its stream-health messages before relying on it.
- Monitor while live. YouTube’s guidance says to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. Listen to the audio and inspect the video; if recording a local archive, check that the file is growing.
- Decide how streams start and stop. YouTube documents Auto-start and Auto-stop settings that let the encoder start or stop a stream. These controls do not establish recovery after a computer, encoder, or network failure, so decide how an interruption will be detected and handled.
For detailed, current settings, see YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, stream settings and stream-key guidance, and YouTube’s streaming tips.
What a 24/7 desktop setup still needs
- A computer configured to remain on and run the encoder continuously, with enough capacity for your actual scenes and output.
- A stable upload connection with headroom above the combined stream bitrate.
- A tested stream key and configuration, stored and handled securely.
- Monitoring and a response plan for encoder crashes, network interruptions, power loss, and YouTube stream-health warnings.
- A realistic content plan. YouTube compatibility does not grant rights to music or video, nor does a continuous stream guarantee monetization. Use content you have rights to stream and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies, including rules concerning reused content.
The available official information does not establish universal hardware requirements or show that buying a new PC, camera, capture card, microphone, power backup, or network accessory is necessary. Base any equipment decision on a measured bottleneck in your own setup.
