For a 24/7 attempt, keep the PC awake while plugged in, use a reliable connection, and make a local recording. One important limit: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not count on a complete YouTube replay of one uninterrupted day-long stream.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and the 24/7 archive limit
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its listed minimum age for live streaming is 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for the current eligibility guidance.
A live broadcast and its replay are separate concerns. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The same guidance recommends a local archive backup. YouTube’s archive guidance also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. A local recording is the safer choice if you need a complete copy.
Prepare the Windows PC and stream source
Choose what viewers will see
An encoder stream can carry a camera, gameplay, screen content, or another prepared video source. A USB webcam is optional: use one if you need a live camera image, not simply because you are streaming from a computer. YouTube documents both webcam streaming and encoder streaming; an encoder workflow is the relevant route for a composed or pre-produced feed.

Keep Windows awake while plugged in
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC does not sleep during the broadcast. Screen-off timing is separate; choose it based on whether you need the display lit.
- If you use a laptop, review its lid-close behavior. Microsoft says many laptops sleep when the lid closes. Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does, then leave the lid open or set the plugged-in action to avoid sleep. Menu labels and options can vary by device. Staying awake does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. Updates, encoder crashes, network or power loss, overheating, and device-specific problems can still stop the feed. Run a supervised test before relying on a long broadcast.
Create the YouTube stream and connect your encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, then create a stream or schedule one. Choose the stream details and visibility appropriate for your channel.
- Open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room. In your encoder, select its YouTube preset if one is available. Otherwise, copy the server URL from Live Control Room into the encoder’s server or ingest URL field.
- Copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream-key field. YouTube describes this key as the password and address that let the encoder send the feed. Keep it private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. Details are in YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
- Start streaming from the encoder. Wait for the feed preview to appear in Live Control Room, then check picture and audio before selecting Go live. Follow the stream-health messages while broadcasting.
- Confirm that your local recording is being written and growing. When ending the broadcast, stop the stream in YouTube as appropriate, then stop the encoder.

Set encoder quality to match your PC and upload connection
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. Pick a resolution, frame rate, and codec that your PC can encode reliably, then choose the corresponding bitrate range from YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit within your available upload capacity and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That margin matters for sustained streaming, particularly if other devices or applications share the connection.
Use YouTube’s documented encoder recommendations
- Ingest protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection.
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 are documented options. Availability and the ability to encode them depend on the encoder and PC; support from YouTube does not mean every Windows machine can handle every format.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval as recommended; do not exceed four seconds.

Run a test and plan for continuity
Before leaving a stream unattended, test the whole path: source, encoder, upload connection, Live Control Room preview, audio, local recording, and Windows power behavior. A test should last long enough to reveal heat or connection problems, but the official guidance does not establish a guaranteed test duration or a configuration that ensures 24/7 uptime.
- Keep a local recording if the footage matters; YouTube does not guarantee that a stream beyond its 12-hour archive threshold will be captured.
- Monitor the encoder and YouTube stream-health notices. Confirm that the local archive file continues to grow.
- Have a way to notice power or network loss and restart the encoder if needed. The cited platform and Windows guidance does not promise automatic recovery from consumer-PC or ISP interruptions.
- Do not assume that splitting a long broadcast into shorter sessions removes every limitation; YouTube’s documentation cited here does not establish that as a universal solution.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
Live Control Room does not show a preview
Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct server URL and that the stream key matches the selected YouTube stream. Check that the encoder has actually started sending, then allow time for the preview to appear. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health
Check whether the selected bitrate is sustainable on the available upload connection. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings. Also check whether other devices or applications are using upload bandwidth.
The stream stops when the laptop is closed or left alone
Review the plugged-in sleep timeout in Windows 11 and the laptop’s lid-close action. Windows power behavior can vary by device, so verify the change with a test rather than assuming the menu setting has taken effect.

The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete
YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR functionality can be limited on very long streams. Use the local recording as the dependable backup rather than relying on a full replay being created.
