There is no bitrate that guarantees a stable 24/7 YouTube stream on every Indian internet connection. Choose settings for your resolution, frame rate and codec from YouTube’s live encoder guidance, then confirm that your actual upload connection can sustain them. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For H.264, 720p30 at 4 Mbps is a conservative starting point; 1080p30 has a listed minimum of 5 Mbps but a recommended video bitrate of 14 Mbps. These are encoder settings, not guarantees of delivery on your ISP plan.
Choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, not its separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube’s live table specifies minimum and recommended video bitrates by codec, resolution and frame rate. The H.264 values below are in Mbps; they are YouTube’s platform settings, not measurements of Indian network performance. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full, current table, including higher resolutions and other codecs.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube’s recommended values are 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. Use one of these codecs only if your encoder supports it and you can sustain the selected bitrate. A lower resolution or bitrate that remains stable is preferable to a sharper stream that repeatedly drops frames.
Practical H.264 starting points
- 720p30 at 4 Mbps: a conservative illustrative target, not YouTube’s minimum. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the H.264 minimum and 8 Mbps as recommended for 720p30.
- 1080p30 at 5 Mbps: YouTube’s listed H.264 minimum, not its recommendation. The recommended value is 14 Mbps; use the minimum only if your connection or encoder cannot sustain more and you accept the trade-off in video quality.
- Higher frame rates: 1080p60 calls for more bitrate than 1080p30 in YouTube’s H.264 table. Do not select 60 fps just because it is available if your sustained upload cannot support it.
How much upload speed do you need for YouTube Live?
Your available upload capacity must carry the stream’s total bitrate. Download speed is not a useful substitute: YouTube notes that upload is often slower, and other people or devices sharing the connection can consume bandwidth. Its guidance recommends roughly 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder and bandwidth guidance.

As a practical calculation, multiply the total bitrate sent by your encoder by 1.2 to estimate the sustained upload capacity to aim for. For example, a 4 Mbps stream calls for about 4.8 Mbps of available upload capacity under this rule. If you send both a primary and a backup stream, include both bitrates before adding headroom. This is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.
Measure the connection you will actually use
- Connect the streaming computer by Ethernet if practical, or test over the same Wi-Fi connection you plan to use. Ethernet can avoid some local wireless variation, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet connection.
- Measure upload speed at the location and during representative busy periods. A single peak result does not establish sustained 24/7 capacity.
- Run an extended test with moving video and audio similar to the intended broadcast. Check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room for dropped frames and stream-health warnings.
- If the upload varies or other household users share it, lower the bitrate or resolution until the stream remains stable during realistic conditions.
YouTube’s guidance does not establish a nationwide Indian upload-speed baseline, rank Indian providers, or validate a specific ISP plan. The useful number is the sustained upload available at your own location, not the speed printed in an advertisement.

Set the encoder and Live Control Room
YouTube supports RTMP or encrypted RTMPS ingestion; it recommends RTMPS. Its general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds apart, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Refer to the official encoder settings for current platform requirements.
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or open the live stream you intend to run. YouTube’s setup instructions show the stream URL and stream key used by an encoder: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate. Automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the default in Live Control Room. If you use a custom stream key configured for manual resolution, make sure the encoder output matches that setup.
- Set the encoder. Select the codec and resolution, use CBR, enter the bitrate appropriate to that combination, set keyframes every 2 seconds (never more than 4 seconds apart), and configure AAC or MP3 audio.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in screenshots, public documents or messages where others could use it.
- Start a test broadcast and inspect the preview and stream health. Confirm that audio and moving video are present and that the selected settings are stable before relying on the feed.
Plan for 24/7 operation, archives and failover
A stream lasting all day has two YouTube limitations worth planning around. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends making a local recording if preserving the full broadcast matters. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek back to before the stream began: YouTube DVR guidance.

- Set viewer expectations: a 24-hour broadcast may not have a complete YouTube archive, and DVR behavior may not provide the rewind experience viewers expect from shorter streams.
- Test encoder failover if you have a primary and backup encoder. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming the player rolls to the backup. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and live streaming tips.
Troubleshooting common bitrate and connection problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, or competition from other users and devices | Check sustained upload on the actual connection; reduce bitrate or resolution; retest during busy periods. |
| Stream will not connect | Incorrect stream URL or key, or encoder settings that do not match the selected stream setup | Copy the URL and key shown in Live Control Room, verify the custom key’s manual resolution if applicable, and keep the key private. |
| Viewers cannot rewind as expected | DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours | Explain the limitation to viewers and avoid promising rewind to the beginning of a 24/7 broadcast. |
| The full broadcast is missing from the archive | YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours | Keep a local recording and verify the recording is being written while the stream runs. |
| Backup takes over unexpectedly or fails to take over | Failover behavior has not been tested, or the primary/backup path has a configuration issue | Use YouTube’s suggested failover test: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and verify that playback rolls to the backup. |
