To keep an Indian radio channel live on YouTube around the clock, you need a continuous audio or playout source, an encoder that sends a valid audiovisual stream to YouTube, a protected stream key, and a plan to detect and recover from failures. You can run the playout and encoder on a cloud virtual machine, or use managed video services—but confirm that the service can deliver to YouTube in the way your setup requires. Neither cloud hosting nor a licence by itself guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
Decide what “24/7 radio stream” means for your station
There are two different workflows to plan for. A live simulcast carries the station’s current on-air output into an encoder continuously. A prerecorded schedule plays uploaded programmes or other recordings in sequence. Both can appear as a YouTube live stream, but they need different audio sources and operating procedures. A cloud virtual machine can host a playout source and encoder for a simulcast; a playlist-based service that loops uploaded video is not a live studio-audio input.
For a radio presentation, the encoder must send a valid audiovisual feed. A still station image can be used as the visual component in some configurations, but do not assume audio-only ingest will work: check the current requirements and preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and in the chosen encoder before launch.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream key
YouTube Help’s live-stream setup guidance, current as of 2026, says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Complete activation and test the channel before scheduling a full-time service; these are eligibility and setup steps, not a promise of 24/7 availability. See YouTube Help, “Get started with live streaming.”

- Sign in to the station’s YouTube channel and confirm that live streaming is enabled and the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow in Live Control Room. Create or select a stream, and schedule it if you want a watch page available in advance.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the selected stream into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Follow the encoder’s instructions for whether the URL and key are separate fields.
- Treat the stream key as a password: keep it in a secrets manager or restricted configuration, limit access to staff who need it, and do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or support posts.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Go live only after the picture and audio are correct.
YouTube Help’s encoder workflow documents the connection and preview process. It does not make a particular cloud deployment reliable by itself; you still need to monitor the source, encoder, network path, and YouTube ingest.
Choose a cloud setup that can reach YouTube
Cloud video products are not interchangeable. Some provide encoding or packaging outputs such as HLS or DASH; that does not automatically mean they can push a continuous stream directly to YouTube. Confirm the exact output path, input and output limits, regional availability, recovery behavior, and costs for the design you intend to run.
| Option | What it is suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | For a prerecorded video playlist rather than a live studio-audio input: upload recordings, add the YouTube stream key once, and let the cloud service loop them to YouTube. It is listed first because it keeps uploaded video streaming from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not take a live camera or live studio feed. Confirm that a prerecorded-video workflow meets the station’s programming needs. |
| Self-managed cloud virtual machine | A station-controlled playout and encoder process on a VM. This offers control over the source, schedule, and encoder configuration. | You are responsible for operating-system updates, source continuity, process supervision, monitoring, network and ingest health, restart procedures, and testing recovery. Confirm the VM region and total compute, storage, and data-transfer costs. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | A managed live-video workflow. Google Cloud documents RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH inputs and HLS/DASH outputs; its best-practices guidance recommends SRT for recovery features in the input workflow. | Those outputs do not establish a direct push-to-YouTube radio workflow. Verify how your chosen pipeline can deliver to YouTube, its service limits and availability, and the full ongoing cost. |
| AWS live-video architecture | AWS documents an architecture for real-time events or 24×7 channels using MediaLive, MediaStore or MediaPackage, and CloudFront. | The documented architecture does not by itself establish a one-click YouTube output. Confirm the route to YouTube, failover design, regional service availability, and total service and transfer costs. |
Provider documentation describes capabilities and example architectures, not guaranteed uptime for a station’s deployment. No comparable current India-region monthly prices are established here, so compare provider pricing calculators and service terms for your actual configuration rather than relying on a generic estimate. Google Cloud and AWS names above refer to their respective live-video documentation.

Build the playout and encoder process
For a live studio simulcast
Route the station’s authorized programme output to a persistent cloud playout or audio input, then into an encoder process. The encoder must combine the programme audio with a visual source if required by YouTube’s current ingest requirements. For example, station artwork may serve as a static visual, subject to testing in the current Live Control Room workflow. Keep the audio source, encoder, and connection to YouTube running independently of any staff member’s desktop session.

For a prerecorded schedule
Use a playout system that advances through the station’s authorized recordings and passes them continuously to the encoder. Test transitions between files, including the last item returning to the first, before treating the schedule as a loop. Check for unintended silence, missing files, incompatible media, and gaps when a playlist is updated.
Set encoder parameters from current requirements
Choose resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval in the encoder based on YouTube’s current stream requirements and the capabilities of the cloud source. A radio programme may need modest visual complexity, but do not assume a particular bitrate or an audio-only preset is accepted. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API publishes video bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate, including H.264/H.265 video and AAC audio options; those figures are for that API’s workflow, not mandatory YouTube radio settings. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance and Live Control Room health indications before fixing production settings.

Make continuity an operating procedure
A cloud VM can remove dependence on a home computer, but it does not eliminate faults. Treat recovery and monitoring as part of the broadcast design, not as an automatic consequence of choosing a cloud region.
- Monitor the playout and encoder processes, cloud instance health, and YouTube ingest status.
- Alert on encoder exit, ingest disconnection, unexpected silence, or a stalled playlist where your monitoring tools allow it.
- Use a supervisor or service manager to restart failed playout or encoder processes, and document how an operator verifies that YouTube has received the reconnect.
- Keep an authorized backup source or recovery procedure available, and test it without exposing the stream key.
- After cloud maintenance or a configuration change, check the preview, audio, schedule transitions, and stream health.
These are recommended operational practices, not tested results or official YouTube requirements. A restart may restore a process without restoring the intended programme source, so verify what viewers actually receive.
Clear music and online broadcast rights before going live
YouTube Help says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube also says that a rights holder may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a licence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube Help, “Copyright issues with live streams.”

Do not assume that a terrestrial or FM radio licence also covers an online YouTube simulcast. India’s Copyright Act section 31D provides a statutory-licence framework for broadcasting published literary and musical works and sound recordings, but that does not decide what rights a particular station holds for its contracts, repertoire, territories, or platform use. Copyright Office notices record that an interim licence issued to an internet service in 2017 was stayed by the Delhi High Court in February 2018 and later set aside by final order dated 22 February 2018. That history is not a determination of this station’s rights.
Before launch, ask the station’s rights counsel or relevant rights owners to confirm that the station’s agreements cover online live streaming and YouTube distribution, the musical works and sound recordings used, the intended territories, and any Content ID allowlisting needed for uninterrupted playback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for archive limits
YouTube Help’s encoder instructions state: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That guidance does not promise a complete archive of a single uninterrupted 24-hour stream. If replay is important, schedule shorter segments or arrange a separate recording and archive workflow, then verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on it. See YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.”
