Make the change in that playlist source—not in YouTube Live Control Room—and keep the encoder or hosted playout session sending content. The exact effect of an edit depends on the tool: it may change only upcoming items, wait for the current item to finish, or alter playback immediately.
Understand what must keep running
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder, which can be software or standalone hardware. As YouTube Help puts it, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The playlist is managed separately by the media player, integrated playout tool, or cloud service that supplies content to the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says a live stream is created when the encoder starts sending and ends when it stops. Therefore, if your playout tool supports live queue edits, change the playlist there without stopping or restarting the encoder. YouTube does not provide a universal live-playlist editor or specify how edits behave in third-party players.
Update the playlist without interrupting the feed
- Identify the playlist source. Determine whether the stream is fed by a local media player and software encoder, an integrated playout tool, or a cloud streaming service. YouTube’s encoder documentation requires a sending encoder but does not prescribe the player or queue editor.
- Keep the live session running. Do not stop the encoder or hosted playout session merely to change the queue. Stopping the encoder’s content feed ends the stream according to YouTube’s setup guidance.
- Open the source’s playlist or queue editor. Use the tool’s own current instructions to add, remove, or reorder items. Before editing a live queue, establish what that specific product does: some tools may apply an edit to upcoming items, defer it until the current item ends, or change playback at once. YouTube documentation does not establish which behavior applies.
- Check the live output. Confirm that the live preview still shows video and that audio remains present after the edit. Monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. This check can reveal a problem; it is not a guarantee of gapless transitions.
- Plan archive handling for long broadcasts. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will produce one complete automatic archive.
Choose where the playlist runs
| Approach | Where playlist edits happen | What must stay running | Queue behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local player and encoder | In the local player or playout software | The computer, player, and encoder session | Depends on the player; verify whether edits affect the current item or only upcoming items. |
| Cloud playout service | In the service’s dashboard or playlist editor | The provider’s hosted playout session | Depends on the service; verify its current queue-edit instructions. |
YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming tool and notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. OneStream Live documents a 24/7 workflow and says its help page requires an Enterprise plan; check the current plan and product instructions before relying on that availability or requirement.

For a YouTube-only cloud option, StreamNeo is #1 to try: it keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; update the playlist through the service’s controls and verify its current queue behavior.
Do not confuse a radio queue with YouTube ingest segments
YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance limits the rolling media playlist to no more than five outstanding segments. Those are transport segments used to deliver the live feed—not songs or prerecorded videos in the playlist viewers hear. The limit is not a cap on the length of a creator’s radio playlist.

YouTube’s API also distinguishes a liveStream resource, which carries audio-video content and streaming settings, from a liveBroadcast event. Its example describes a continuing stream resource separately from a broadcast resource that is updated to live. This helps explain why feed management and broadcast-event management are separate; it does not provide instructions for editing a player’s queue.
