How to Set Up a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop with OBS on Ubuntu

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a video in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream from Ubuntu, add it to an OBS scene as a looping Media Source, set the canvas and output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, configure a supported encoder to YouTube’s recommended bitrate, then connect OBS to YouTube using RTMPS and test the feed in Live Control Room. Your Ubuntu system, GPU, drivers, encoder, and upload connection must sustain that workload; OBS compatibility alone does not guarantee 4K60 performance.

Before you start: channel access and system capacity

Check YouTube Live access

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy its server information and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may send a feed to that stream. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

Check the Ubuntu system

Install OBS using the OBS Project’s Linux installation guidance, checking the instructions for your Ubuntu release. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux requirements. These are baseline requirements, not a guarantee that the machine can render and encode a 3840×2160/60 scene continuously. OBS notes that CPU requirements vary considerably with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point, but a sustained rehearsal is still necessary. OBS Project: System Requirements.

No single CPU or GPU recommendation fits every Ubuntu system. Confirm that the encoder you intend to use is actually available and stable in your installed OBS build with your GPU and drivers.

Create a scene that loops the video

Loop one file with Media Source

  1. In OBS, create or select a scene.
  2. In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source.
  3. Give the source a name, select the local video file, and enable Loop in its properties.
  4. Fit or scale the source to the canvas. Check the preview for cropping or empty space.

OBS’s built-in Media Source works on Linux and supports looping a local file. If the recording is below 3840×2160, OBS can scale it to the canvas, but scaling does not add detail that is absent from the source. OBS Project: Media Sources.

Use VLC Video for a playlist

For multiple files, install VLC so its libraries are available, then add a VLC Video source and create a playlist in its properties. Loop Playlist is on by default. Choose this route when you need a sequence of files rather than one repeated video. OBS Project: Media Sources.

Check the last and first frames and listen to the audio across the loop point. Play at least one full cycle during testing: the repeat controls do not guarantee a gapless transition for every file or system.

Set OBS for 4K at 60 fps

Set canvas, output, and frame rate

  1. Open Settings → Video.
  2. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160.
  3. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160.
  4. Set the common FPS value to 60.

These settings ask OBS to render a 4K60 output; they do not prove the machine can sustain it. Watch for rendering and encoding lag during a long rehearsal.

Choose an encoder and bitrate

In Settings → Output, switch to Advanced mode if needed to expose encoder controls. Select an encoder that is present and stable on this Ubuntu installation. Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. OBS specifically documents Intel Quick Sync on Linux when compatible Intel HD Graphics hardware is present; availability of other vendor encoders depends on the OBS build, GPU, drivers, and codec. Verify the choices in OBS rather than assuming a codec is supported because of a GPU brand. OBS Project: Encoder Guide.

YouTube’s current 2160p60 guidance, checked on 2026-10-03, gives these bitrate figures by ingest codec:

Ingest codec YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube’s stated 4K60 encoder-setting recommendations, not a promise that every codec is available in OBS on Ubuntu. For SDR, use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 with 8-bit color. YouTube’s table specifies constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. YouTube says 4K streams are optimized for normal latency; its low-latency optimization option is unavailable at 4K. Check the live encoder settings page again before configuring a stream, as recommendations can change. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For SDR 4K60, AV1 and HEVC have a lower recommended bitrate than H.264 in YouTube’s current table. Use either only if OBS actually offers it and YouTube accepts it for your selected ingest protocol. If a stable AV1 or HEVC option is unavailable, H.264 is the documented fallback, with a higher recommended bitrate.

Connect OBS to YouTube and rehearse

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, select or create the encoder stream and copy the server information and stream key.
  2. In OBS, choose YouTube RTMPS where available. Otherwise, enter the server information and key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  3. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room; review stream-health warnings before making the stream public.
  4. Test representative motion and audio, verify the loop completes, and check audio/video sync. Monitor OBS for rendering or encoding lag and Live Control Room for stream-health problems.
  5. Run an upload speed test on the same connection you will use for the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the total outgoing bitrate and notes that other users or devices sharing the connection can reduce available capacity. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Applying that 20% headroom guideline to YouTube’s recommended bitrate means planning for at least 60 Mbps of available upload for H.264 at 50 Mbps, or 42 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC at 35 Mbps. Those figures are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s guidance, not separate bitrate recommendations from YouTube.

For a scheduled event, YouTube advises preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room before going public. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Plan the loop’s duration and archive

YouTube can automatically archive a live stream that is under 12 hours, including streams at 1440p and 2160p. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not capture it at all. For an extended loop where the recording matters, enable local recording in OBS, confirm that the file grows during the stream, and plan a controlled stop and restart before the stream exceeds 12 hours. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The stream is not 4K or 60 fps OBS output resolution or frame rate is set lower, or the source itself has less detail. Check Settings → Video for 3840×2160 and 60 fps, then check the source file’s resolution. Upscaling a smaller source cannot restore detail.
OBS shows rendering or encoding lag The system cannot sustain the selected scene and encoder workload. Confirm the encoder is stable on the installed Ubuntu drivers. Test a simpler scene or a lower output setting if necessary; OBS compatibility alone does not establish sustained 4K60 capacity.
YouTube reports unstable health or dropped frames Available upload bandwidth may be too low or shared, or the outgoing bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain. Retest upload on the live connection, account for YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation and other network use, and select a supported codec/bitrate combination the connection can carry.
The video stops instead of repeating The Media Source’s Loop option is off, or the wrong source type or playlist option is being used. Open the source properties and enable Loop; for a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist and confirm VLC libraries are installed.
The loop has a visible or audible jump The file’s ending and beginning do not join smoothly, or the system/file playback introduces a transition. Inspect the end and start frames and audio, then replay a full cycle in OBS before going live.
The stream does not connect The stream key or server details may be wrong, or the key may belong to another selected stream. Copy the current server details and key from the intended Live Control Room stream. Keep the key private; replace it if it may have been exposed.
