What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A refurbished desktop can run a church’s YouTube stream around the clock if it can encode the church’s actual video at the chosen settings and the internet and power stay available. OBS’s minimum requirements do not guarantee a particular used PC will manage the job. Test the complete setup before relying on it—and plan recordings separately, because YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Can a refurbished PC stream to YouTube all day?
Yes, provided the specific computer can handle the video source, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and its network and power arrangements are dependable. “24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee from YouTube or the computer. No particular refurbished model, seller, broadband service, or UPS has been verified here, so choose by measurable criteria and a sustained test rather than a processor-generation or price claim.
Separate the failure points: the desktop and encoder, the church’s local network, the internet provider’s connection, local electricity, and YouTube’s ingest. A UPS may bridge a brief local power cut if correctly sized, but it cannot fix an ISP outage. A single desktop is not an automatic backup encoder.
Confirm the church channel can stream
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Initial enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until launch day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to send video to the stream. Keep it private and reset it in Studio if exposed.
- Set the stream’s title, privacy, and schedule. Confirm these before starting the encoder so the arriving feed is associated with the intended broadcast.
- Start OBS and inspect the incoming preview and stream health. Make the stream public or start it as scheduled only after confirming the feed and audio are right.
YouTube recommends setting up ahead of an event, starting early enough to inspect the preview, monitoring stream quality, and testing any configured failover. These habits also matter for a continuous channel; a backup is useful only when it is actually configured and tested. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check the refurbished desktop before depending on it
For Windows, OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements. OBS explicitly cautions that meeting the basics does not mean a computer can necessarily stream or record: demand depends on encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements.
Inspect the actual unit
- Confirm the exact processor, RAM, graphics hardware, available encoder options, and supported operating system—not just the seller’s headline description.
- Check storage health, cooling, ports, and compatibility with the church’s capture devices and audio inputs.
- Consider the real scene. A fixed, low-motion camera is a different workload from multiple camera sources, animated overlays, and transitions.
- Prefer a seller with a return window, then test the unit at the intended settings for an extended period before making it the live encoder.
OBS notes that scene composition and GPU load can compete for resources; reducing scene complexity may help when encoding performance is poor. Its encoding-performance troubleshooting guide explains relevant causes and fixes. Do not assume a particular CPU generation or memory figure is sufficient without testing the planned production.

Set OBS output and prove the internet connection
Choose a modest output the desktop and measured upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 720p at 30 frames per second with a recommended video bitrate of 2 Mbps. It also recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS encrypted transport. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a specific PC or internet line can maintain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Set resolution and frame rate to match the source and need. Start conservatively; higher resolution or frame rate increases encoding and upload demands.
- Use a stable bitrate and keyframe interval. Set constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where supported. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings.
- Measure upload capacity, not only download speed. Repeat tests at the times the church expects to stream, since network contention can vary.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% above the total stream bitrate. Include any additional output and account for other devices sharing the connection.
- Run a long test with the actual scenes and audio. Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload and check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. Raise quality only after the system sustains the lower setting without problems.
A speed-test result is a snapshot, not proof of uninterrupted service. YouTube warns that shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. The available evidence does not establish broadband performance for a particular Indian location; local provider, route, and time-of-day conditions need to be tested at the church.

Keep Windows and the encoder running unattended
On Windows 11, power and sleep controls are under Settings > System > Power & battery. Set sleep and hibernate behavior so the PC does not suspend during streaming. The display can turn off separately if doing so does not interrupt the video output. Confirm the settings again after operating-system updates and restarts. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance.
Test what happens after a reboot, power restoration, and network restoration rather than assuming OBS will resume the broadcast. Assign a volunteer to receive alerts, know the manual restart steps, and be able to reach the site if needed. If using a backup encoder, configure and test the handoff; YouTube describes testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network and confirming viewers move to the backup in its streaming tips.

Plan power and internet continuity
- Use Ethernet where practical. A wired desktop-to-router connection avoids one local wireless link, but does not replace dependable upstream service.
- Consider a UPS for brief local interruptions. Size it for the measured load and the runtime required; no particular capacity or runtime is established here. Include the router and relevant network equipment if they must remain powered.
- Know what the UPS cannot do. It cannot keep the stream online through an ISP failure unless an independent connection is available and configured.
- Plan who responds. A second internet path, backup encoder, and named monitor help only if someone has tested the recovery procedure.
YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream and that shared connections can reduce available upload bandwidth. Its streaming tips are a useful basis for testing network and failover arrangements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an archive plan for streams longer than 12 hours
A continuous live watch page and a complete recording archive are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends a local archive backup. Do not rely on a 24-hour broadcast to produce a complete YouTube replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

- If the archive matters, configure local recording. Confirm OBS is recording, that the file grows during the test, and that it plays back correctly.
- Manage disk space and retention. Set a process for checking free space and moving or deleting recordings; a full disk can undermine recording even if the live output continues.
- Alternatively, use planned shorter sessions. Test the transitions and handoff in advance if you need complete platform archives.
Very long streams can also have viewer DVR rewind limitations; do not promise viewers a full rewind window on an always-on stream.
Preflight and ongoing monitoring checklist
- Confirm channel live access, the intended stream privacy, title, and schedule.
- Test representative video movement and the actual audio source, not just a static desktop screen.
- Check Live Control Room preview and stream health, and open the watch page on a phone.
- Verify bitrate against stable measured upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Check OBS for encoding overload and dropped frames; simplify scenes or lower output demands, then retest.
- Verify local recording files exist, grow, and play back; track disk space and retention.
- Test recovery after power, network, and PC restarts, including the person’s manual response steps.
- Name a volunteer or operator responsible for monitoring. A computer running continuously does not make the service operationally unattended.
YouTube recommends using similar audio and movement in tests, checking stream health, confirming local archives are growing, and verifying the stream from both channel and watch pages. See its encoder settings guidance and streaming tips.
Troubleshooting: symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames | Upload instability, competing network use, or bitrate too high for the connection. | Measure upload during stream hours, reduce competing use, lower bitrate, and retest with headroom. Check the network path and use Ethernet if practical. |
| “Encoding overloaded” in OBS | Encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene demands exceed the computer’s capacity. | Reduce scene complexity and output demands; review OBS’s encoding-performance guide, then run another sustained test. |
| Stream stops after a period of inactivity | Windows sleep or hibernate suspended the PC. | Review Settings > System > Power & battery and test again after changing sleep behavior. |
| No complete YouTube archive | The stream exceeded 12 hours, or local recording was not configured or verified. | Use a tested local recording plan or planned shorter sessions; verify that local files are being created and remain playable. |
| Feed does not appear in Live Control Room | Incorrect stream key or server URL, encoder not started, or channel access not enabled. | Confirm live access, recheck the encoder workflow and credentials in Studio, and protect/reset an exposed key. |
| Stream fails during a power or ISP interruption | A UPS only covers supported local equipment for its available runtime; it does not restore broadband. | Check which equipment lost power, restore the connection, then follow the assigned restart procedure. Test any independent internet or encoder backup beforehand. |
