How to Set Up a Comfortable Gaming Corner in a Small Living Room

A measurement-led guide to fitting PC or console gaming into a shared living room without blocking walkways or sacrificing comfort.

A comfortable gaming corner starts with the space you already have, not with a particular chair or RGB accessory. Decide whether the corner is mainly for a PC or a console, measure the area with the chair occupied, keep a clear route through the room, and position the display for readable, glare-free viewing. Use movable seating, storage furniture and cable control when they solve a measured problem; leave optional lighting and decorative upgrades until the layout works.

The plan below works for a shared living room that must still function as an ordinary living room after a gaming session. It covers both desk-based PC play and sofa- or TV-based console play.

1. Decide how the corner will be used

Write down the actual play pattern before moving furniture. A one-player console setup has different requirements from a PC used for long sessions, and a corner that must disappear after every session needs different furniture from a permanent workstation.

Identify the equipment you already own

  • For a PC: computer or laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers or headset, desk, and any charging devices.
  • For a console: console, television or monitor, controllers, headset, charging dock, and games or accessories that need storage.
  • For either setup: power strips, network equipment, and the cables that must reach an outlet.

List these items before shopping. IKEA’s small-space gaming guidance starts with who will play and how, then fits the equipment and furniture to the room. That order prevents a large desk or dedicated chair from becoming the thing that makes the room unusable.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

Set a recovery requirement

Choose one of three practical modes:

  • Permanent corner: the display and seat can stay in place, but the walking route must remain open.
  • Quick reset: the seat, controllers and keyboard can move out of the main room in a few minutes.
  • Full reclaim: the display or desk must be folded, rolled or stored so the area can return to ordinary seating or circulation.

Your recovery requirement determines whether fixed furniture is worthwhile. A stable desk can be comfortable for PC play, while a light chair, nesting stool or movable table may be more useful when the room changes function every day.

2. Measure the usable footprint, not the empty room

Wall-to-wall dimensions are not enough. Measure the area while accounting for the occupied chair, the route to the sofa and door, door swings, windows, outlets and existing TV furniture. HP’s compact gaming guidance identifies footprint and desk depth as key constraints; the practical test is whether a person can sit, stand and walk through the area without shifting furniture.

Make a floor-plan checklist

  • Mark the sofa, coffee table, television unit, radiator and other items that cannot move.
  • Mark every door swing and the normal walking path between the entrance, sofa, kitchen or hallway.
  • Note window locations and the direction of incoming daylight.
  • Locate outlets and estimate where a power strip could sit without crossing the walkway.
  • Measure the desk or TV unit footprint, then add the space occupied by the chair when someone is sitting in it.
  • Measure the clearance needed to pull the chair out, reach the controls and get up without striking a table.

Use removable tape or sheets of cardboard to outline the proposed desk, chair and TV stand on the floor. Walk the route with the outline in place. If you have to turn sideways, step over a cable or push the chair into the sofa to pass, the layout is too large even if the furniture technically fits.

Reserve access before filling the corner

Keep the route to the door, sofa and storage usable during play. A chair that fits only when empty is not a workable chair position. Also check the chair’s highest and lowest settings, armrests and recline: the occupied footprint can change as you play, lean back or stand.

3. Pick a layout for PC or console play

Decision PC-first corner Console-first corner
Primary display Monitor on a desk or another surface that supports the screen, keyboard and mouse. Television or monitor on existing TV furniture, with a clear view from the sofa or movable seat.
Seating Supportive chair that lets you reach the controls while keeping the walkway open. Existing sofa may be sufficient; add a light movable seat only if the viewing position is uncomfortable.
Space pressure Desk depth, chair pull-out space and monitor support are usually the limiting factors. Screen viewing distance, controller storage and the TV unit’s depth are usually the limiting factors.
Reset after play Keyboard, mouse and chair may need to move or tuck under the desk. Controllers and headset can return to a drawer or basket; a movable seat can clear the area.
Typical cable route Power and display cables run from the desk toward an outlet, ideally along furniture. Console, TV and network cables stay near the TV unit; avoid a lead crossing the walking path.

Use the sofa when it already works

A supportive sofa can solve console seating without adding another large object. Test it with the controller in hand: can you see the entire display, keep your back supported and stand without blocking the room? If yes, spend the space budget on storage or cable control instead of a dedicated gaming chair.

Use a compact desk only when PC controls require it

A PC needs a stable surface for the display, keyboard and mouse. A shallow or corner desk can work, but do not choose by width alone. Confirm that the monitor stand, keyboard, mouse movement and chair pull-out space all fit inside the measured footprint. HP’s guidance also points to heat, noise and cable considerations in compact setups; leave ventilation around the computer and avoid trapping it behind the sofa or in a closed cabinet.

4. Choose seating for support and easy movement

Comfort comes from fit, support and freedom to change position, not from a gaming label. IKEA recommends movable seating and multifunction furniture for small spaces. That can mean a light task chair, an ottoman that doubles as living-room seating, or a chair that can slide under a desk when the room changes use.

Check a chair in the actual corner

  • With your feet on the floor, can you reach the controls without leaning forward continuously?
  • Does the back support your normal upright posture?
  • Do armrests collide with the desk or sofa?
  • Can you pull the chair out, turn and stand without entering the main walkway?
  • Can the chair be moved or stored without lifting it over other furniture?

Do not assume a gaming-branded chair prevents pain or is automatically more ergonomic than an ordinary chair. A well-fitting everyday chair may be the better choice when it leaves more clearance and can be used elsewhere in the room.

Plan for more than one player

If two people play, mark both occupied seats before buying anything. Two chairs can consume more depth than the desk or sofa itself and may block a door or coffee-table route. For local multiplayer, a sofa plus one movable seat may preserve more floor area than two dedicated chairs.

5. Place the display for readable, upright viewing

For a PC workstation, OSHA’s monitor guidance says to place the screen directly in front of the user, at least 20 inches away. It describes a generally preferred viewing distance of 20–40 inches (50–100 cm), with the distance adjusted so text can be read comfortably while the head and torso remain upright and the back is supported. OSHA also advises keeping the monitor’s top line at or below eye level.

These figures are workstation guidance, not a universal gaming rule. Apply the comfortable-reading test first, then adjust the seat or display rather than forcing your neck to accommodate a fixed position. A console screen viewed from a sofa may need a different arrangement from a keyboard-and-mouse workstation.

Use a corner only when it improves the view

A corner can provide more usable desk depth when the room’s straight wall is occupied. OSHA notes that flat-panel displays take less space than conventional monitors and that corner placement can recover depth. Check that the screen remains directly in front of you rather than angled so far that you twist your torso.

Recover surface area carefully

A monitor stand or arm can free desk space, but compatibility matters. Check the display’s mounting pattern, the desk’s thickness and strength, the arm’s weight rating and the range of adjustment. Keep enough distance for comfortable viewing after the monitor is moved. If the arm forces the screen too close or makes the desk unstable, the stand may be the safer space-saving choice.

6. Control glare before adding decorative light

Reflections can make a small display tiring to use even when the furniture is correct. Position a monitor perpendicular to a window where possible, rather than facing the glass or placing the window directly behind you. OSHA warns that tilting a monitor back can create reflections from ceiling lights; adjust the screen and room lighting together instead of solving glare by adding brightness.

Use a simple light sequence

  1. Play at the planned seat during the brightest part of the day.
  2. Identify reflections from windows, ceiling fixtures and lamps.
  3. Move the screen or seat first, keeping the display directly in front of the user.
  4. Close blinds or curtains when daylight is the source of the reflection.
  5. Add a shaded task lamp only if the room is still too dark for safe movement or comfortable controls.

IKEA presents LED strips as an optional atmosphere feature. They are not a substitute for glare control and are not established here as improving comfort or performance. If you use one, place it where it does not shine into your eyes or reflect directly from the screen.

7. Route cables without creating a trip hazard

Cable management is a circulation issue, not just an appearance issue. IKEA recommends managing cables in a small gaming room, and Lenovo identifies clips, ties and under-desk trays as practical organizing categories.

Choose a route

  • Run cables along the back or underside of existing furniture where they cannot enter the walking path.
  • Keep the power strip close enough to the outlet that no extension lead crosses the room.
  • Bundle only cables that share a route; leave enough slack for a chair to move and for the display to be adjusted.
  • Secure loose sections with clips or ties, and use an under-desk tray when the desk has a suitable underside.
  • Keep the cable bundle away from chair casters, recline mechanisms and heat-producing equipment.

After routing, walk the room with the lights low and the chair pulled out. If your foot can catch the cable or the chair can roll over it, reroute it before using the setup.

8. Add storage that serves the living room

Console players can often use a TV bench with storage for controllers, headsets and games. A drawer, basket or cabinet keeps small items from spreading across the coffee table and makes the reset routine faster. For PC play, use the area under or beside the desk for peripherals, but do not block ventilation or the chair’s movement.

Prefer multifunction furniture

A storage bench can provide seating and hold accessories. A side table can support a controller during a film and a keyboard during a gaming session. A movable chair can serve the living room when the desk is not in use. IKEA’s small-room recommendations favor this kind of dual purpose because every permanent object consumes circulation space.

Keep heat and noise in mind

Compact hardware has less room for airflow and can make more noise feel noticeable in a shared room. HP’s compact setup guidance includes heat and noise among the planning considerations. Leave ventilation openings clear, avoid enclosing a running computer in a closed storage compartment, and place fans or consoles where their exhaust does not blow directly into the sofa area.

9. A measured setup sequence

Follow this order so that each purchase answers a known constraint.

  1. Write the use case. Record PC or console, number of players, equipment already owned and whether the corner must be reset after play.
  2. Mark fixed features. Draw the sofa, TV furniture, doors, windows, outlets and the normal walking route on paper or with removable floor tape.
  3. Outline the occupied setup. Mark the desk or TV unit, then place the chair at its normal playing position and its pull-out position.
  4. Test circulation. Walk from the door to the sofa and around the chair. Open doors and drawers fully. Remove or resize any item that blocks the route.
  5. Place the display. For a PC, put the screen directly in front of the user and adjust distance and height for readable, upright viewing. For a console, test the television from every intended seat.
  6. Test daylight and overhead light. Look for reflections during daytime and evening conditions. Reposition before buying lamps or LED strips.
  7. Route power and signal cables. Keep them along furniture or under the desk, with slack for movement and no cable across a walkway.
  8. Run a full session test. Sit for the length of a normal session, reach every control, stand up and leave the room. Note pressure points, glare, blocked paths or equipment heat.
  9. Add only the missing function. Buy seating, monitor support, storage, cable organizers or lighting only when the test identifies that need.
  10. Practice the reset. Put controllers, keyboard, mouse and headset in their storage locations. Move the chair and confirm that the room can return to ordinary use without a wrestling match.

10. Common small-room mistakes and fixes

The empty footprint fits, but the occupied chair blocks the room

Cause: measurements included the desk or TV unit but not the pulled-out chair and the person sitting in it.

Fix: mark both the playing and standing positions. Use a shallower surface, a chair that tucks away, or the sofa if it already provides a good console view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monitor looks fine but causes neck or eye strain

Cause: the screen is off-center, too close, too low or too high, or the user is compensating for glare.

Fix: place it directly in front, keep the top line at or below eye level, and adjust distance so text is readable with the back supported. Then remove window and ceiling-light reflections.

Cables make the shortest route unsafe

Cause: the outlet is across the walking path or the chair rolls over the bundle.

Fix: route along furniture, move the power strip, add clips or an under-desk tray, and leave movement slack only where it cannot become a trip point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The corner feels crowded even with compact furniture

Cause: every item has one purpose and none can be moved or stored.

Fix: turn it off while testing, solve window and overhead glare first, and reinstall optional lighting only where it does not reflect into the viewing position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer or console makes the shared room uncomfortable

Cause: restricted airflow or audible fans are more noticeable in a compact corner.

Fix: keep vents clear, avoid closed cabinets while equipment is running, and place exhaust away from the sofa and main seating area.

11. What to buy, and what to postpone

There is no required shopping list. Start with what the room already provides, then fill the first measured gap.

Need revealed by the test Possible solution What to verify first
No supportive PC seat, or the seat must move after play Compact or movable chair Occupied clearance, back support, armrest interference and storage location
Insufficient desk depth Monitor stand or compatible monitor arm; a corner position may also help Display mounting, desk strength, adjustment range and comfortable viewing distance
Loose cables near a route Clips, ties or an under-desk tray Furniture attachment points, cable slack and chair movement
Controllers and accessories spread through the room TV bench, drawer, basket or multifunction storage Ventilation, door clearance and a reset location
Reflections or unsafe darkness Blind or curtain adjustment, then a shaded task lamp if needed Whether the light improves visibility without reflecting from the screen
Desire for atmosphere only Optional LED strip or accent light That it does not create glare; it is not an ergonomic requirement

Buy in that order: seating and display position first, cable and storage control second, decorative lighting last. Current prices and availability vary by region, so compare only after taking your measurements and checking the exact furniture dimensions.
