Splinter Cell: Double Agent on PC does not have a documented native gamepad layout. The 2006 PC manual lists only a mouse and keyboard as supported peripherals, with movement on W, A, S and D, action and confirm on E, and camera control on the mouse. The practical way to try a controller is to let Windows detect it, then use a keyboard-and-mouse-to-XInput mapper such as x360ce. A Steam Community guide reports that approach with an Xbox 360 controller, but other players reported right-stick and trigger conflicts. Treat it as an optional workaround rather than guaranteed plug-and-play support.
What controller support the PC version actually documents
The starting point matters because Double Agent’s PC release was designed around keyboard and mouse input. Ubisoft and Prima Games’ 2006 PC manual has a “Solo Controls” section, but its peripheral line says: “Peripherals Supported: Mouse, keyboard.” It does not publish a gamepad control map or promise native controller support.

That documentation is different from current operating-system compatibility. Steam’s support page says Double Agent can be played on Windows 10 and Windows 11, while the original manual lists Windows XP. The newer statement does not add a gamepad map and should not be read as proof that every controller, driver or remapping tool will work.

Choose the right approach before changing files
Use the mapper route for the Steam installation
A 2015 Steam Community discussion describes putting x360ce utility files in the Steam version’s SCDA-OfflineSystem directory, configuring the controller there and then launching the game. Replies say the instructions worked for some players, while another player saw the right analog stick behave like the right trigger. The post also warns that old files and links may need replacement. Do not treat an archived download link as an official or current release.
This route is most useful when the game accepts keyboard and mouse input but you want a controller-shaped layout. The mapper translates controller signals into inputs the game already understands. It does not turn the old PC executable into a modern native-gamepad build.
Do not assume Steam Input is a Double Agent fix
Discussions about controller remapping for the first Splinter Cell game mention Steam Input and mouse-axis problems. That is useful context for why a right stick may need careful configuration, but it is not a Double Agent procedure. Steam Input may be worth testing as an alternative layer, yet the cited material does not establish a reliable Double Agent profile or universal settings for it.
Decide whether wired or wireless is the sensible first test
- Wired: Start here when troubleshooting. It removes battery state, wireless pairing and receiver issues from the diagnosis.
- Wireless: Use it only after Windows sees the controller consistently. A wireless controller can work in Windows while its receiver, Bluetooth profile or remapper exposes a different device to the game.
- Xbox 360-style input: This is the controller type described by the community instructions. That report does not certify any particular current model.
Prepare Windows and the game
1. Confirm that Windows sees the controller
- Connect the controller or complete its wireless pairing before starting the mapper.
- Open Windows’ game-controller test panel. You should see one device with a stable name and responsive buttons, both analog sticks, the D-pad and both triggers.
- Press each control slowly and watch for an axis that moves without being touched. A drifting axis will make later calibration look like a game problem.
- If Windows does not detect the device, fix the cable, receiver, pairing or driver first. Double Agent cannot use a controller that the operating system does not expose.
Record what Windows calls each control. Some controllers expose triggers as one combined axis; others expose left and right triggers separately. That distinction becomes important when you assign them in x360ce.
2. Make the game folder easy to reach
In Steam, open Double Agent’s local files from the game’s management menu and locate the installation directory. The community-described location is SCDA-OfflineSystem. If your installation uses a different executable or folder structure, do not copy files into a guessed directory: identify the folder containing the game’s system files and read the mapper’s instructions for that build.

Before adding a remapper, close the game and make a backup copy of the original files in the target folder. Keep the backup outside the game directory so a later file check does not overwrite it. A mapper can be removed cleanly only if you know which files it added.
3. Avoid stacking several input layers at once
Turn off or close other remapping utilities while you perform the first test. Two layers can both translate the same stick, or one can hide the physical controller from the other. Start with one mapper, one controller and the game’s normal keyboard-and-mouse settings.

Set up the community-reported x360ce workaround
The following sequence reflects the Steam Community method while separating reported facts from settings you must tune for your own device. It is not an official Ubisoft procedure.
1. Obtain a current, compatible x360ce release
Use the mapper’s current documentation rather than an old file attached to a 2015 discussion. Versions differ in whether they use a local executable, a particular XInput DLL or another compatibility method. Match the release to the game’s architecture and follow its own installation notes; do not rename files at random when the game fails to start.
2. Place the mapper files in the game’s system directory
For the Steam arrangement described by the community, that directory is SCDA-OfflineSystem. Copy only the files required by the mapper version you selected. If the utility offers to create a configuration file, allow it to do so in that directory so the game and mapper use the same profile.

3. Open the mapper with the controller connected
Launch the mapper before Double Agent and select the device Windows detected. Confirm that button presses and axis movement appear in the utility. If the mapper shows no device, return to the Windows test panel rather than attempting to configure blank controls.
4. Build a starting layout from the documented keyboard controls
There is no official Double Agent controller map to copy. Use the following as a starting point, then adjust it to your preferences and the prompts you see in the game:

The table is a troubleshooting baseline, not a claim that these are the game’s native bindings. A mapper may label the mouse axes as horizontal and vertical, or may require an option that makes the right stick behave as mouse movement instead of a second gamepad stick.
5. Calibrate before launching
- Center both sticks and set a small dead zone only if the on-screen cursor or axis indicator moves at rest.
- Move each stick through its full circle and confirm that horizontal movement does not produce vertical output.
- Pull each trigger separately. If one trigger moves the other, select the mapper’s combined-trigger or split-trigger option appropriate to your device.
- Check that a button is not assigned both to a keyboard key and to a mouse click unless you intentionally want both actions.
6. Save the profile, then launch the game normally
Save the configuration in the game directory, close the mapper if its instructions say it can run in the background, and start Double Agent from Steam. Some mapper versions require their local executable or DLL to be present at launch; follow the version-specific instruction rather than assuming the same behavior as another release.
7. Test in a low-risk situation
Do not begin a difficult mission immediately. Use a menu and an early, safe area to verify movement, camera control, action, crouch or other commands you have assigned, both triggers, the D-pad and every face button. Watch for a control that repeats, sticks on, or moves the camera when you press a trigger. Save only after the full set behaves predictably.

Fix the most common mapping failures
The controller works in Windows but nothing happens in Double Agent
- Confirm that the mapper files are in the game’s actual
SCDA-OfflineSystemdirectory, not the Steam library root or a shortcut folder. - Check that the mapper profile was saved and that its status indicates an active device before launch.
- Close other remappers and overlays, then restart Steam and the game.
- Verify that your mapper release supports the game’s executable architecture and the Windows version you are using.
- Temporarily map one face button to E and one stick direction to W. If those two inputs work, add the rest gradually instead of importing a complicated profile.
The right stick acts like a trigger
This exact class of problem was reported in the Steam discussion. It usually means the mapper assigned the wrong physical axis, interpreted a combined axis incorrectly, or loaded a profile for a different controller. In the mapper, clear the right-stick and trigger assignments, move each physical control while watching the live axis indicator, and reassign the axis that actually changes. Save, relaunch and test one direction at a time. If the conflict returns, try a fresh profile rather than editing the old one indefinitely.
The camera is too fast, too slow or moves diagonally
Mouse emulation does not behave like a conventional right analog stick. Lower the mapper’s mouse sensitivity, adjust horizontal and vertical values independently if available, and increase the dead zone only enough to stop idle drift. If pushing the stick left also moves the camera vertically, swap or reselect the two mouse axes. Test in a hallway or other controlled space before changing several values together.
A trigger does not register, or both triggers fire together
Open the mapper’s live input view and identify whether the device exposes each trigger separately or as opposing values on one axis. Assign the mode that matches that behavior. Do not duplicate a trigger assignment on a shoulder button while diagnosing it; that can make the game appear to work while hiding the real axis problem.
Menus work but an in-game action does not
Menus may respond to a simple keyboard emulation while gameplay needs mouse movement or a modifier key. Recheck the manual’s distinction between E for action and the mouse for camera control. Assign the missing action explicitly, then test it in gameplay rather than relying only on the title screen.
The game stops launching after adding the mapper
Exit Steam, remove the mapper files you added and restore the backup copy. Use Steam’s file-integrity repair only after preserving any configuration you want to keep. Then try a mapper release and installation method documented for your executable. A launch failure is a reason to change the compatibility layer, not to keep adding DLLs to the folder.

Wired and wireless controllers: what to check
The available Double Agent evidence does not establish that one modern controller model is better than another. Make the decision by testing the characteristics that affect this game:
- Windows should identify the device consistently after reconnecting or waking it.
- Both analog sticks should report separate horizontal and vertical axes without drift.
- Triggers should be individually detectable or have a clearly supported combined-axis mode.
- The chosen mapper should recognize the device and retain its profile after restarting the game.
- Every required action should have one unambiguous assignment.
A wired device is usually the quickest diagnostic baseline because it removes wireless pairing and battery variables. Once the profile works over a cable, repeat the Windows test and the in-game test over wireless; do not assume that a successful wired profile proves the wireless connection exposes identical axes.
How to keep the setup maintainable
Keep a known-good profile
Save a copy of the working mapper configuration outside the game folder. Note the controller name, mapper version and the folder in which the files were installed. That record lets you restore the setup after a Steam file repair, game reinstall or controller replacement.

Change one variable at a time
If you alter the right-stick mode, sensitivity, trigger mode and button layout simultaneously, you will not know which change fixed or caused a problem. Make one change, launch the game, test the same short sequence and record the result.
Expect the game to remain keyboard-and-mouse underneath
On-screen prompts may continue to show keyboard keys because the workaround is translating controller input into the controls documented by the PC manual. That is normal. The useful test is whether the assigned action occurs reliably, not whether the prompt changes to a controller glyph.
