To give a Facepunch Rust server a reliable hostname, create two DNS records: an A record for the server’s IPv4 address and an SRV record for the _rust service over _udp. The SRV record must point to the A-record hostname and contain the port configured by server.port. Then set server.favoritesEndpoint to that hostname, without the _rust._udp prefix. If you use Cloudflare, leave both records DNS-only (grey cloud), not proxied.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What the custom domain setup does
A DNS name gives players a stable address such as play.example.net instead of requiring them to remember an IPv4 address and port. DNS does not replace the game server, change its port, or hide the server behind a web proxy. It simply publishes the name-to-server information that Rust needs when a player connects.

Rust’s current DNS guidance calls for two records. The A record maps your chosen hostname to the server’s IPv4 address. The SRV record identifies Rust’s service, uses UDP, points at the A-record hostname, and supplies the game port from server.port. Keep one SRV entry for the server; multiple competing entries can produce inconsistent lookups.
The name used for player connections and favorites is the ordinary hostname, not the service-formatted SRV name. For example, players use play.example.net, while the DNS service record is created under _rust._udp.play.example.net (or through equivalent service, protocol, and name fields in a provider dashboard).

Before you edit DNS
- Know the public IPv4 address. Use the address reachable from the internet, not a private address such as one assigned only inside your home or host network.
- Know the configured game port. Read the value of
server.portfrom the server’s startup configuration. The SRV record must use that exact port. - Control a domain or subdomain. You need permission to create A and SRV records in the authoritative DNS dashboard for the domain.
- Choose one stable hostname. A name such as
play.example.netis easier to distribute than changing an address whenever the server moves. - Check whether your DNS provider supports SRV records. The dashboard must let you specify the Rust service, UDP protocol, target hostname, and port.
- Plan for direct game traffic. A normal DNS record can direct players to the server, but it is not a generic TCP/UDP relay. The server’s firewall, host, and port-forwarding rules still have to permit the configured game traffic.
How the two records fit together
| Record | Example name | Value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | play.example.net |
Your Rust server’s public IPv4 address | Provides the stable hostname and the destination address. |
| SRV | _rust._udp.play.example.net |
Target: play.example.net; port: the value of server.port |
Tells Rust which UDP service and port belong to the hostname. |
Some dashboards display the SRV name as one combined field. Others split it into Service, Protocol, and Name. These are two interfaces for the same DNS record, not two different records.
Step 1: Create the A record
- Open the authoritative DNS zone for your domain.
- Choose Add record and select A.
- Enter the host label you selected, such as
play. If the dashboard expects a full name, enterplay.example.netinstead. - Enter the server’s public IPv4 address.
- Save the record. Leave proxying disabled if your provider offers a proxy switch; Rust game traffic must resolve directly to the server.
Do not put a port in an A record. An A record contains only a hostname-to-IPv4 mapping. The game port belongs in the SRV record.
Step 2: Create the Rust SRV record
Create exactly one SRV record for the server. Its service is _rust, its protocol is _udp, its target is the A-record hostname, and its port is the value of server.port.
Dashboards with separate fields
- Select SRV as the record type.
- Set Service to
_rust. - Set Protocol to
_udp. - Set Name to the hostname players will use, such as
play.example.net, or to the provider’s equivalent host field for that name. - Set Target to the A-record hostname, such as
play.example.net. Do not substitute the IPv4 address in the target field. - Set Port to the exact
server.portvalue. - Complete any required priority or weight fields using the values accepted by your DNS provider, then save.
Dashboards with one combined name field
Some providers, including Cloudflare, place the service, protocol, and name together. In that interface, the record name is formed as _rust._udp plus the hostname, for example _rust._udp.play.example.net. Enter the A-record hostname as the target and the configured game port as the port. Follow the dashboard’s own prompts for priority and weight if they are displayed.
GoDaddy’s interface separates service, protocol, and name into individual boxes. Enter the same values in those corresponding boxes rather than typing the entire underscore-prefixed name into one field.

Step 3: Turn off DNS proxying
Cloudflare’s orange-cloud proxy is designed for supported web traffic and is not a relay for a Rust game server. Set the A and SRV records to DNS only (grey cloud). A 2026 Rust setup guide reports that leaving records proxied breaks game traffic because players no longer receive a direct path to the server.
Recommended Free Tools
If another DNS provider offers a similar acceleration, CDN, masking, or proxy toggle, disable it for these records unless the provider explicitly documents support for Rust’s UDP traffic. Ordinary authoritative DNS is what you need.
Step 4: Set the favorites endpoint
Set Rust’s server.favoritesEndpoint value to the A-record hostname, without _rust._udp. For the example above, the value is:
server.favoritesEndpoint "play.example.net"
Apply this setting through the server’s normal configuration or startup method, then restart or reload the server using the procedure supplied by your host. The important distinction is the name itself: use play.example.net, not _rust._udp.play.example.net, and not the numeric IP address.
This setting gives Rust a stable favorites endpoint when the server’s IP address or game port changes. Update the A record when the IPv4 address changes and update the SRV port when server.port changes; keep the favorites endpoint as the ordinary hostname.

Step 5: Verify DNS before testing in Rust
Check both records from a terminal before troubleshooting the game client. Replace the example hostname with yours.
dig +short A play.example.net
dig +short SRV _rust._udp.play.example.net
The first command should return the server’s public IPv4 address. The second should return an SRV result containing the target hostname and the configured port. DNS tools may display the target with a trailing dot; that is normal. If your provider has separate regional resolvers, checking from more than one network can show whether the new records have reached different resolvers.
You can also use a reputable online DNS lookup service, but verify the record type and complete name carefully. Looking up only the A record does not prove that the Rust SRV record is correct.
Step 6: Test the hostname in Rust
- Confirm that the A and SRV lookups return the expected values.
- Make sure the server is running and listening on the same port entered in the SRV record.
- Use Rust’s direct-connect or server-browser function with the ordinary hostname. If you use the console connect command, supply the hostname and the server’s configured port according to the game’s current command syntax.
- After a successful connection, favorite the server and restart the game later to confirm that the favorite remains associated with the hostname.
Do not test with the literal SRV label as the player-facing address. The _rust._udp form is the DNS service record; the ordinary A-record hostname is the address players should use.
Provider dashboard differences
| Dashboard behavior | What to enter | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Combined SRV name (Cloudflare-style) | Use a name such as _rust._udp.play.example.net; set target to play.example.net and port to server.port. |
Set the record to DNS-only; do not leave the orange cloud enabled. |
| Separate service, protocol, and name (GoDaddy-style) | Service _rust; protocol _udp; name for play.example.net; target play.example.net; port from server.port. |
Ensure the dashboard did not append the wrong host or create a different service name. |
| Provider with no SRV support | An A record alone does not implement the documented Rust setup. | Use a DNS provider that supports SRV records or ask the provider how it represents them. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
“No DNS record found” for the SRV lookup
- Check that the service is
_rust, not_applicationor another label. - Check that the protocol is
_udp, not_tcp. - Confirm the record name includes the correct hostname and has not been duplicated or truncated by the dashboard.
- Query the complete name with
dig +short SRV _rust._udp.play.example.net, not just the A-record name.
A uMod community report describes this exact failure when service and protocol were entered as _application and _tcp. Those values do not match Rust’s documented service and protocol.

The A record resolves, but players cannot connect
- Verify that the SRV target is the A-record hostname and that the SRV port exactly matches
server.port. - Check the server host firewall, operating-system firewall, and any router or hosting-panel port rules for the configured game port.
- Disable Cloudflare’s orange-cloud proxy or any equivalent proxy feature. DNS can resolve correctly while a proxy still prevents UDP game traffic.
- Make sure players are using the ordinary hostname, not an old IP address or the
_rust._udpservice label.
The server worked before a port change
Change the SRV record’s port to the new server.port value. The A record does not contain a port, so editing it will not fix a port mismatch.
The server moved to a new IP address
Change only the A record’s IPv4 value, provided the hostname and game port are unchanged. Because server.favoritesEndpoint uses the hostname, players can continue using the same favorite after DNS updates propagate.
Some players still see the old destination
DNS changes are cached by recursive resolvers. Shockbyte states that users generally should not need to wait longer than 12 hours for new settings to populate, but that is not a universal guarantee. Actual visibility depends on the DNS provider, resolver caches, and the record’s TTL. Continue checking the authoritative record and several independent resolvers rather than assuming one lookup represents every player’s network.

Multiple SRV records appear
Remove unintended duplicates and retain one SRV entry for this Rust server. Multiple entries can cause different clients or resolvers to receive different targets or ports, making an otherwise correct setup appear intermittent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why older guides may tell you to use only an A record
Older hosting tutorials sometimes claim that Rust does not officially support SRV records and recommend an A record alone. That advice conflicts with Facepunch’s later DNS documentation, which specifies both an A record and an SRV record for the _rust._udp service. When an older article and the current Facepunch guidance disagree, follow the official Rust documentation and verify the resulting records directly.

An A-only setup can still prove that a hostname resolves, but it does not publish the service and port information described by the current Rust DNS configuration. It is therefore not the complete custom-domain setup.
Choosing a DNS provider for a Rust server
You do not need a gaming-branded DNS service. Evaluate the provider’s DNS controls against these requirements:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- SRV support: You can create a record with service
_rust, protocol_udp, a target hostname, and a port. - Clear host-field behavior: The dashboard explains whether a name is entered as a relative label such as
playor as a full hostname. - Per-record proxy control: You can leave game records DNS-only instead of routing them through a web proxy.
- Readable record inspection: The saved record shows its complete service name, target, and port so you can compare it with
digoutput. - Change management: You can update an IP or port without deleting and recreating unrelated records.
The dashboard layout is less important than the resulting DNS data. Whether the provider uses one combined SRV name field or three separate fields, the published service must still be _rust over _udp, with one target and the correct port.
Operational checklist
- The A record hostname resolves to the server’s public IPv4 address.
- The SRV service is
_rust. - The SRV protocol is
_udp. - The SRV target is the A-record hostname, not the numeric IP.
- The SRV port equals
server.port. - Only one SRV entry exists for the server.
- Cloudflare or another proxy is disabled for the records.
-
server.favoritesEndpointcontains the ordinary hostname without_rust._udp. -
digreturns the expected A and SRV values before in-game testing.
What to change when the server changes
| Server change | DNS or configuration change |
|---|---|
| IPv4 address changes | Update the A record’s address. Keep the hostname and favorites endpoint. |
| Game port changes | Update the SRV record’s port to the new server.port value. |
| Hostname changes | Create matching A and SRV records for the new hostname and change server.favoritesEndpoint to that ordinary hostname. |
| Moving to a provider with a different dashboard | Recreate the same A and SRV data; the field layout may change, but the service, protocol, target, and port must not. |
After any change, repeat the A and SRV lookups and then test a direct connection. This separates DNS problems from server, firewall, and client problems.
