Start with what your community will do together, then build a small, easy-to-navigate server around those activities. To add Discord’s native welcome flow that lets members choose channels and roles, enable Community and configure Server Settings > Onboarding. You’ll also need a rules channel, a moderator-only Community updates channel, and Discord’s required safety checks.
Plan the community before adding channels
Write a one-sentence purpose for the server, then list the main reasons someone would join: discussion, game questions, feedback, events, announcements, or access to creator resources. Give each recurring activity a clear home. A channel should exist because members need it, not simply because Discord lets you create it.
For a gaming creator, a starter layout might include announcements, introductions, general discussion, game questions, and a space to share work or give feedback. These are examples, not required Discord channel names. Keep the most welcoming, useful spaces easy to find; avoid making every channel a default destination for new members.
Enable Community
- Open the server menu and choose Server Settings.
- Select Enable Community and complete Discord’s setup.
- Set up the required safety checks, a rules or guidelines channel, and a moderator-only channel for Discord Community updates.
- Confirm that the server complies with Discord’s Community Guidelines.
Community unlocks features used in this guide, including Onboarding and Rules Screening. Discord says Community can be disabled later from its settings if the server no longer needs those features. See Discord’s Community server setup instructions.

Make channels easy for newcomers to understand
Choose channel names and descriptions that tell people what to do there. Put the main conversation and other welcoming spaces where newcomers can find them, and keep specialized interests or optional notifications out of the initial path unless they help people get started.
Discord’s onboarding examples include general discussion, polls, giveaways, forums, and LFG channels. For a creator community, use only the categories that fit the audience: a gaming server might need a place to find teammates, while a community built around a series or game might prioritize theory discussion or feedback. Discord recommends making most member channels available through defaults or onboarding questions so people can discover them.

Set up Onboarding to offer channels and roles
Onboarding is Discord’s built-in answer to a welcome flow that asks questions and assigns channels or roles. Its setup has three parts: choose default channels, create questions, and connect answer choices to channels or roles. Follow Discord’s Community Onboarding FAQ and Onboarding announcement for the current interface.
- Go to Server Settings > Onboarding.
- Select default channels. Favor active, welcoming places where a new member can participate or get oriented.
- Create concise questions and connect each answer to the channels or roles it should grant. For example, ask which game or activity a member is interested in, then offer relevant channels. Make notification roles optional if members may not want pings.
- Preview the flow as a new member. Check that the choices make sense, the intended channels appear, and answers provide the access you expect.
Discord’s current FAQ says Onboarding requires at least 7 default channels, with at least 5 allowing @everyone to view and send messages. These are eligibility thresholds, not recommendations that a server should create extra channels for engagement. If Discord’s settings show a different requirement when you set up the server, follow the current in-product guidance.

Keep questions and answers short, avoid overwhelming newcomers with options, and make the main member spaces discoverable. If an answer is hard to understand or does not lead to a useful destination, revise or remove it.
Publish rules and choose whether to require acknowledgment
Write rules that explain the behavior you expect and what moderators will do when someone breaks them. Be specific enough to guide real situations in your community, such as harassment, spoilers, spam, or how to keep discussion on topic. Discord provides the channel and screening tools; the server owner still decides the standards and how to enforce them.

After enabling Community, you can turn on Rules Screening in Safety Setup so prospective members must acknowledge the rules before participating. Discord’s FAQ states that Rules Screening supports a maximum of 16 server rules; treat that as a feature limit, not a target. Details are in Discord’s Rules Screening FAQ.

Configure AutoMod filters that fit the server, decide where its alerts should go, and make sure moderators can access that private alert channel. Discord says AutoMod can detect or block unwanted content and route alerts to a moderator channel. Filters help catch problems, but they do not replace human judgment for context-sensitive decisions. For discoverable communities or servers using public invites, Discord Safety recommends anti-spam and text filters or AutoMod keyword filters, plus some member verification. Choose settings that reduce abuse without making legitimate newcomers struggle to participate. Discord’s tips against spam and hacking provide additional guidance.
Test the experience, then adjust
Use Onboarding’s preview and inspect the server as a member would. Confirm that someone can understand the server’s purpose, find the rules, choose useful channels, and locate the main conversation without needing a moderator to explain the layout.
- If the first screen feels crowded, reduce default-channel clutter or simplify the choices.
- If members cannot find a useful space, make it a default channel or add it to an onboarding answer.
- If an answer grants the wrong access, correct the channel or role mapping and preview again.
- If moderation alerts are missed, check that the private alert channel is configured and visible to the moderators who need it.
Discord specifically recommends previewing Onboarding and keeping choices concise. Revisit the setup when the community’s activities change rather than letting unused channels and roles accumulate.
