Regular World of Tanks on Windows does not document a native gamepad setup screen. Its official control guide is built around W, A, S, D and mouse aiming, so the practical PC solution is to translate controller input into keyboard and mouse commands with Steam Input or another remapper. Connect the controller to Windows, create a keyboard-and-mouse layout, and test it before entering a normal battle. Console World of Tanks: Modern Armor and World of Tanks: HEAT are different products with different controller support.
First, identify your World of Tanks version
Wargaming treats these games as separate products in its support portal: Wargaming Support. Use the instructions for the game you actually launch.
| Game | Controller situation |
|---|---|
| World of Tanks (Windows PC) | The official PC guide documents keyboard and mouse controls, not a native gamepad configuration path. Use Steam Input or another remapper. |
| World of Tanks Blitz | A separate game. Its support documentation explains keyboard and mouse configuration through Garage → Settings → Controls; a gamepad may still require external mapping. |
| World of Tanks: Modern Armor | Console edition designed for native Xbox and PlayStation controls. Do not apply the PC emulation steps to it. |
| World of Tanks: HEAT | Has native gamepad controls on supported platforms. Update 1.1.1 added individual controller movement remapping and an in-battle controls reference screen. |
For Blitz control configuration, see Wargaming’s controls article. Its control-mode matchmaking qualification is explained at this support page. HEAT’s controller changes are listed in the 1.1.1 notes.
What you need
- A Windows PC running the standard World of Tanks client from Wargaming Game Center or Steam.
- An Xbox/XInput-compatible controller, DualSense, DualShock 4, or another gamepad Windows recognizes.
- A USB cable or Bluetooth. USB is preferable while troubleshooting.
- Steam, if you want Steam Input for a Wargaming Game Center installation.
- Optional back buttons or paddles; World of Tanks has more commands than a standard pad has buttons.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance covers Xbox, PlayStation and third-party controllers, including Bluetooth pairing and common connection fixes: connect a controller to a PC.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Connect the controller to Windows
USB
- Plug the controller into the PC with a suitable USB-A or USB-C cable.
- Wait for Windows to install or recognize it.
- Test the sticks and buttons in Windows or Steam before opening the game.
- Keep the wired connection during initial layout work; it removes battery, pairing and wireless-interference variables.
Bluetooth
- Open Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Put the controller into pairing mode.
- Select it in the device list and wait for Connected status.
- Confirm the battery is charged before launching World of Tanks.
If it disconnects, re-pair it, try another cable or USB port, remove competing pairings, and install pending Windows updates. A wired test quickly shows whether the problem is Bluetooth rather than the game.
Set up Steam Input for the Wargaming Game Center version
Steam Input is a practical workaround, not a documented Wargaming controller feature. Steam’s labels change occasionally, so the wording below may vary slightly.
- Install and open Steam, then connect the controller.
- Choose Add a Game and add the World of Tanks executable or launcher as a non-Steam game.
- Add the executable that actually starts the client. A shortcut that closes before the game launches may not let Steam Input attach.
- Open the title’s Steam properties and the controller settings.
- Set Steam Input to enabled or forced on for that title.
- Launch World of Tanks from the Steam shortcut, not separately from Game Center.
- Open the controller-layout editor and select a keyboard-and-mouse template.
- Assign the baseline controls below, save the layout, and test in the Garage before a battle.
Wargaming’s Steam article explains Steam play and account linking, but does not publish a controller layout: World of Tanks through Steam.
Build a baseline controller layout
The official PC guide confirms that movement uses W, A, S and D and that the mouse positions the gun horizontally. The following is a starting profile, not a universal “best” layout.
Rank #2
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
| Controller input | Keyboard/mouse output | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Left stick up | W | Forward |
| Left stick down | S | Reverse |
| Left stick left/right | A/D | Hull steering |
| Right stick | Mouse movement | Aim and view |
| Right trigger | Left mouse button | Fire |
| Left trigger | Right mouse button | Aim or zoom |
| Right bumper | Next shell or ammunition command | Fast ammunition access |
| Left bumper | Previous shell or ammunition command | Fast ammunition access |
| A / Cross | Confirm, handbrake or frequent action | Easy thumb access |
| B / Circle | Escape or cancel | Menu recovery |
| X / Square | Reload, consumable or combat action | Customizable |
| Y / Triangle | Auto-aim, target or utility action | Customizable |
| D-pad | Shells, consumables, camera or team commands | Discrete commands |
| Menu/Start | Esc or game menu | Menu access |
| View/Select | Tab, minimap or scoreboard | Information access |
| Stick click | Cruise control, sniper toggle or utility action | Reduces face-button overload |
Check the current Settings → Controls page in your client before assigning ammunition, consumables or utility commands; action names and bindings can change.
Use a modifier for the missing buttons
Hold a bumper and press another button for a second layer: for example, hold Left Bumper for consumables, Right Bumper plus D-pad for shells, and reserve a paddle for sniper mode, auto-aim, map or cruise control. Keep one unmodified button on Escape so you can always leave a menu.
Tune movement and aiming
The right stick is not controlling a native turret axis; it is moving a virtual mouse. Start with a modest mouse sensitivity and dead zone, then increase sensitivity until you can turn the gun without constant stick lifts. Adjust the response curve and sniper-mode sensitivity separately if Steam Input offers those controls.
- Left stick only moves the cursor: assign its four directions separately to W, A, S and D, not to mouse movement or a generic gamepad axis.
- Aiming feels twitchy: increase the dead zone slightly or use a less aggressive response curve.
- Aiming feels slow: raise mouse-emulation sensitivity gradually.
- Hybrid option: use the controller for driving and buttons while keeping a physical mouse for aiming. This is often more precise than full mouse emulation.
A controller can be comfortable for couch play and tank movement, but a mouse generally remains more precise for long-range shots, target tracking and rapid turret corrections. Do not expect the PC emulation profile to feel identical to Modern Armor’s native console controls.

Test the layout before a battle
- Navigate the Garage and confirm every menu button, including Escape.
- Enter a low-risk mode or training environment.
- Check forward, reverse and hull turns.
- Move the turret, enter aim/sniper mode, and fire.
- Change shells and activate a consumable.
- Open the map and scoreboard.
- Verify that no action repeats when a stick is released.
Fix common controller problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Windows or Steam cannot see the controller | Cable, port, battery, pairing or driver problem | Charge it, try another cable/port, re-pair Bluetooth, and update Windows. |
| Steam sees it, but World of Tanks does not | Steam Input disabled; wrong executable; game launched outside Steam; another remapper intercepting input | Close the game, quit other remappers, force Steam Input, select a keyboard-and-mouse layout, and launch from Steam. |
| Left stick moves the mouse | Stick assigned to mouse instead of four keyboard keys | Bind up/down/left/right individually to W/S/A/D. |
| Double inputs or erratic movement | Two remappers, a virtual and physical controller, or duplicate bindings | Disable every mapping tool except one, disconnect extra controllers, restart Steam and rebuild the profile. |
| Keyboard prompts appear | The game is receiving emulated keyboard/mouse input | Usually normal; prompts do not prove the layout is broken. |
| Bluetooth drops during a battle | Low charge, interference or pairing conflict | Use USB, charge the pad, move the receiver, re-pair, and update Windows. |
| Layout broke after an update | Steam profile, executable or mod conflict | Test Windows and Steam input, launch the base client in safe mode, then rebuild the layout. |
Use safe mode, then reset settings only if necessary
For a layout that previously worked, start World of Tanks with Wargaming Game Center’s Launch the game in safe mode option. Safe mode runs the base client without mods; it does not delete modifications or reset settings. If the controller works there, an outdated or conflicting mod is the likely cause. Instructions: Wargaming safe mode.
If the base client still fails, back up your settings first. Wargaming’s reset procedure uses %appdata%wargaming.netWorldOfTanks; deleting or resetting Preferences.xml restores controls and other settings to defaults. This removes personalized bindings, so copy the folder before changing it. See the settings and cache reset instructions.
Controller rules and fair-play risks
One physical button producing one ordinary keyboard or mouse action is different from automation. Do not use fire macros, turbo or rapid-fire functions, scripts that press or release inputs automatically, or aim assistance. Wargaming’s January 2026 Fair Play update identifies automation and certain macros as prohibited: Fair Play update. Check the current policy before enabling any advanced controller function.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a controller worth using?
Yes, if comfort, couch play and familiar analog driving matter more than maximum aiming precision. An Xbox/XInput pad is the lowest-friction starting point on Windows. DualSense and DualShock 4 are viable through Steam Input, although prompts may remain Xbox-style or keyboard-style. Third-party models should explicitly support XInput; back buttons are useful, while turbo and macro features should stay disabled.

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
A mouse and keyboard remain the safer choice for competitive precision. Treat the controller as a viable personalized interface, not as a native PC feature or a guarantee of console-like handling.
Steam Deck and non-Steam launchers
These steps target Windows and the Wargaming Game Center or Steam PC versions. Steam Deck and other Linux setups are not guaranteed: non-Steam launchers can make Steam Input attach to the wrong process, and the PC client still expects keyboard-and-mouse input. If you use a Deck, verify that the actual game process receives the layout before relying on it in battle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an Xbox controller with World of Tanks on PC?
Yes, but the regular PC client normally needs Steam Input or another remapper to translate the controller into W/A/S/D and mouse commands.
Can I use a PS5 DualSense controller?
Yes. Windows can connect it by USB or Bluetooth, and Steam Input can translate it for the PC client. Button prompts may not match the controller.

Yes, by adding the relevant executable or launcher to Steam as a non-Steam game and launching it through Steam Input. This is a workaround, not a documented native Wargaming feature.
Will controller use get my account banned?
Ordinary one-to-one remapping is distinct from prohibited automation. Avoid turbo, fire macros, scripts and aim-assist functions, and follow Wargaming’s current Fair Play policy.
Is World of Tanks Blitz the same as the PC game?
No. Blitz has separate controls and support documentation. Do not assume a PC World of Tanks layout or console Modern Armor controls apply to Blitz.
