Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Steam shows Install even though a game folder is still on your drive, the files are often intact but Steam has lost the library path or installation metadata. The supported first fix is to reconnect the library in Steam → Settings → Storage, then let Steam inspect the existing files.
The quick fix
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games.
- Open Steam → Settings → Storage.
- Click the + button and add the existing Steam library on the affected drive.
- Select the library root—the folder containing
steamapps—not an individual game folder. - Restart Steam if the library does not refresh immediately.
- If the game still shows Install, click it, choose that same library, and start the process. Steam may scan and reuse the files instead of downloading the complete game. This behavior is documented by Steam at its installation-files support page.
A full download amount shown at the beginning is not proof that the files were deleted. Pause the download and recheck the library path if Steam does not reduce the required download after it has had time to inspect the folder.
Choose the correct library folder
A Steam library is the parent directory containing steamapps. On Windows, a typical layout is:
D:SteamLibrary
└── steamapps
├── common
│ ├── Game One
│ └── Game Two
├── appmanifest_123456.acf
└── libraryfolders.vdf
Add D:SteamLibrary, not D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommonGame One. The default Windows location is commonly C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon (Steam Support). macOS uses different filesystem paths, but the same principle applies: add the library root that contains steamapps.

If Steam rejects the folder, check for a duplicated path such as D:SteamLibrarySteamLibrarysteamapps, or for a library that was accidentally moved one level too deep.
What Steam is actually missing
Steam’s installed status depends on both the game data and metadata:
- The game data normally sits in
steamapps/common/<Game Folder>. - The parent
steamappsfolder contains library information and files namedappmanifest_<AppID>.acf. - The AppID in the manifest identifies the game. A missing, misplaced, or mismatched manifest can make existing data appear uninstalled.
This explains several different symptoms: one game can show Install, an entire secondary library can disappear, or Steam can report that a library is unavailable. A game installed through another launcher, a different Steam account, or a non-Steam copy will not be fixed by reconnecting a Steam library.

If only one game still shows Install
- Search every connected Steam library for the game’s folder and confirm its name and approximate size.
- Add the library containing that folder through Settings → Storage.
- Use the game’s Install button and select that same library.
- After Steam recognizes it, open Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
Renaming the folder, moving it manually, an interrupted update, corruption, or a manifest in another library can all cause this single-game symptom. Verification repairs missing or damaged files in a recognized installation; it does not reconnect a library Steam cannot see. Steam also notes that some validation failures can be local configuration files and are not automatically evidence of a broken game (Steam Support).

When the drive is listed but installs or updates fail, use Steam → Settings → Storage → … → Repair Folder. This addresses writable-folder and permission problems; Steam requires library folders to be writable for installations and updates (Steam Support). Repairing a folder cannot restore files that were deleted.
Advanced recovery: appmanifest files
Keep Steam fully closed and back up the entire steamapps folder before moving or restoring metadata. If a trusted backup contains the correct appmanifest_<AppID>.acf, restoring it to that library’s steamapps folder can help Steam pair the existing game data with its installation record. Steam’s migration guidance also emphasizes preserving steamapps when moving an installation (Steam Support).

Do not download a random manifest or blindly copy one from another game, account state, branch, or incomplete installation. Editing manifest contents is a last resort: it can create a false installed status that still fails validation. If no reliable backup exists, the safer route is to add the library and start a new installation in the existing location so Steam can reacquire or validate the required metadata and files.
External drives and changed drive letters
Check the operating system first
If Windows File Explorer, Disk Management, or macOS cannot see the drive, Steam cannot reconnect it. Check the cable, enclosure, USB port, power supply, and drive health before changing Steam settings.
Reconnect a changed path
For example, a library previously at D:SteamLibrary may now be mounted as E:SteamLibrary. Add the current path in Settings → Storage. If Windows repeatedly assigns different letters, use Disk Management to assign a stable letter; that is an operating-system fix, not a Steam repair.

Connect external storage before launching Steam and do not unplug it while Steam is running or updating. Steam discourages external hard drives because disconnections and performance issues can cause problems, although they can work when reliably connected (Steam Support). An internal drive is generally more dependable for a frequently used library.
After reinstalling Steam or resetting Windows
- Exit Steam and preserve the old
steamappsfolder. Keepuserdataand separate save backups where applicable. - Install or launch Steam and sign in to the original account.
- Add the old library through Settings → Storage.
- Allow Steam to update, then verify recognized games from Properties → Installed Files.
Reconnecting installation files and restoring saves are separate tasks. Steam Cloud works only for games that support it and for saves successfully synchronized to the account. Third-party games may store saves in C:Users<Windows username>DocumentsMy Games, AppData, a publisher folder, or elsewhere; the location is game-specific. Do not delete userdata or local save folders while repairing the library. Steam’s migration guidance describes these caveats at Steam Support.
If every game is missing
- Confirm that you are using the account that owns the games.
- Check whether Steam created a new default library after reinstalling.
- Confirm that the secondary or network drive is mounted.
- Check for a changed drive letter.
- Look for damaged or unavailable library metadata.
- Make sure you did not launch a different Steam installation.
Locate the old library before reinstalling games. If the game folders are genuinely absent, the drive is failing, or files are too incomplete or corrupted to validate, some or all downloading may be unavoidable.

Safe inspection and prevention
On Windows, these read-only commands can confirm the expected structure without deleting anything:

- Shut down Steam normally before moving library folders.
- Back up
steamappsbefore migration or metadata recovery. - Back up important saves separately from game installation files.
- Keep drive letters stable and avoid unplugging active game storage.
- Use Storage Manager rather than manually editing
libraryfolders.vdf; back up that file before any advanced intervention.
Older guides may call the library screen Settings → Downloads → Steam Library Folders. Current Steam support directs users to Settings → Storage, though labels can vary by platform, language, or client revision (Steam Support).
