The reliable way to host Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT) for more than a one-off session is a Garry’s Mod dedicated server. Install the Garry’s Mod Dedicated Server with SteamCMD (app ID 4020), launch it with +gamemode terrortown, add maps and addons through a Workshop collection, and attach a unique Game Server Login Token (GSLT) created for Garry’s Mod (base-game app ID 4000). Then open the configured server port, supervise the process, and verify a local and external connection before inviting players.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Garry's Mod servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A listen server is quicker for a private evening with friends, but a dedicated server is the maintainable option for a persistent community: it keeps running independently of a player’s game client, has durable configuration and administration, and can be restarted after updates or reboots.

Choose the right hosting model
Listen server for a short private session
A listen server runs from the Garry’s Mod client. It has the lowest setup effort and is suitable when one player is willing to host a single session for friends. Availability depends on that player’s game being open, and administration and addon management are tied to the session or local client configuration.
Dedicated server for a persistent TTT community
A dedicated server runs the server executable without requiring a player to remain in the game. It is the better fit for scheduled play, a public server, or a community that needs a stable hostname, persistent permissions, logs, workshop content, and restart automation. The trade-off is additional administration: SteamCMD, a startup script, a GSLT, firewall rules, content management, and process supervision.

Plan the server before installing it
Linux prerequisites
Use a separate, non-root service account for the server process. You need enough disk space for the base server, downloaded Workshop content, maps, logs, and future updates. You also need an open terminal or SSH session for installation and administration, SteamCMD, and permission to open the server port in the host firewall and any provider control panel.
Create a directory owned by the service account and keep the game files, configuration, and startup scripts there. Running the server as a dedicated account limits the damage a compromised addon or misconfigured process could cause and makes ownership problems easier to diagnose.

Windows prerequisites
Install SteamCMD and choose a permanent directory for the dedicated server, such as a folder on a drive with sufficient free space. The account running the server needs read and write access to that directory. Plan a scheduled task or Windows service equivalent before opening the server publicly so a crash or reboot does not leave it offline.
Decide the network and content policy
- Choose the external port and confirm that the host firewall and provider firewall will allow it. The commonly documented default hosted-game port is
27015, but players must use the actual port configured on your server. - Choose an initial map and maximum player count. These are separate startup choices from the TTT gamemode.
- Decide whether the server is private, password-protected, or public. A public server should use its own GSLT and a clear hostname.
- Make a small, intentional Workshop collection. Every map in the rotation must be available to the server, and every addon should be compatible with the exact TTT or TTT2 setup you intend to run.
Install the Garry’s Mod Dedicated Server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD installs the Garry’s Mod Dedicated Server identified by app ID 4020. The validate argument checks the installed files after downloading them, which is useful for a first install or after a suspected file problem.
Windows installation
Open a command prompt in the SteamCMD directory and run the documented Windows form:
steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir c:my_garrysmod_server +app_update 4020 validate +quit
Replace the example directory with the folder you selected. Wait for SteamCMD to finish before attempting to launch the server. If validation reports an error, resolve the directory permission or disk-space issue and run the update again.

steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir ../gmodds +app_update 4020 validate +quit
The relative path is resolved from SteamCMD’s current working directory. Confirm that the resulting directory contains the Garry’s Mod server files and that the service account can create and modify configuration, Workshop, and log files.
Updating safely
Stop the running server before an update. Updating while the process is active can leave files locked or produce a partially changed installation. Run the same SteamCMD update command, including validate when you want a file check, and only then restart the server.
Launch TTT instead of the sandbox gamemode
The active mode is selected with the gamemode ConVar. Setting +gamemode terrortown on the command line makes the server load TTT; the map and slot count are independent settings.

Representative Linux launch command
TTT2 documentation gives this representative command, which combines the required mode, map, slots, Workshop collection, and GSLT:
~/gmod_ds/srcds_run -game garrysmod +gamemode terrortown +maxplayers 16 +map gm_flatgrass +host_workshop_collection 2052244154 +sv_setsteamaccount WHATEVERYOURTOKENIS
Replace the path, collection ID, and token with your own values. The same arguments can be supplied to the Windows server executable; use the executable and path appropriate to your installation.
Minimal test launch
For the first boot, reduce variables. Launch srcds or srcds_run with -game garrysmod, +gamemode terrortown, one known-good map, and a modest +maxplayers value. Add the Workshop collection and GSLT after the basic process reaches the map if you are troubleshooting installation. A successful startup should identify the terrortown gamemode and load the selected map without a fatal error.
Understand the startup arguments
-game garrysmodpoints the Source server executable at the Garry’s Mod game directory.+gamemode terrortownselects Trouble in Terrorist Town.+map gm_flatgrasschooses the initial map; use a map that is installed or supplied by the Workshop collection.+maxplayers 16sets the advertised slot count in this example. Choose a value your host and addon set can support.+host_workshop_collection 2052244154tells the server to download and mount the collection with that numeric ID.+sv_setsteamaccount WHATEVERYOURTOKENISsupplies the server’s GSLT for Steam authentication.
Distribute maps and addons through Workshop
Create and curate a collection
Create a Steam Workshop collection containing the maps, TTT weapons, roles, utilities, and other addons the server actually needs. Copy the collection’s numeric ID into +host_workshop_collection <collectionID> on the startup command line. Facepunch documents this as the standard way to automatically install Workshop addons on a dedicated server.

Keep the collection small and intentional. Remove abandoned, duplicate, or incompatible addons rather than asking players to troubleshoot a large pile of subscriptions. A collection that changes frequently also makes restarts and version diagnosis harder.
Use the Workshop ID file when appropriate
Facepunch also documents garrysmod/cfg/srcds_workshop_ids.txt for Workshop IDs. This gives you a configuration-file route when you need to maintain IDs separately from the startup command. Do not maintain conflicting lists without a reason; choose one source of truth so an old map or addon is not silently reintroduced.
TTT2 downloader guidance
TTT2 documentation recommends a Workshop-downloader addon instead of relying on the older FastDL approach for its use case. Treat that recommendation as TTT2-specific operational guidance: verify that the downloader supports your exact game mode, server version, and addon set before deploying it. Workshop distribution remains the cleanest baseline, but a downloader does not make an incompatible addon compatible.
Check map rotation and dependencies
- Every map named in the rotation must be present on the dedicated server, not merely subscribed on an administrator’s client.
- Test a map change from the console before inviting players. A map that fails to load can leave the server at a startup or change-level error.
- Check each addon for required content, game dependencies, and conflicts with TTT or TTT2 roles and weapons.
- If you remove an addon, remove its dependent content and configuration as well; stale files can produce misleading errors.
Create a unique GSLT for a public server
Facepunch states: “Starting with the May 2020 update, all Garry’s Mod servers should have a GSLT (Steam Game Server Login Token).” Generate the token through Steam’s game-server account page using Garry’s Mod’s base-game app ID 4000.
Token rules
- Use a different token for every server. Reusing one token on multiple servers can cause Steam connection errors.
- Keep the token private. Store it in the startup service or script with permissions that prevent ordinary users from reading it.
- Pass it with
+sv_setsteamaccount YOURLOGINTOKENHERE. - Replace an invalid, expired, or revoked token before diagnosing less obvious browser problems.
What a token failure looks like
An invalid or expired token can prevent startup or stop the server from authenticating with Steam. Read the startup console first; do not assume a missing browser listing is a firewall problem until token authentication succeeds. If you have moved the server or changed ownership, verify that the token is still assigned to the intended account and is not being used by another instance.
Configure identity, administration, and gameplay
Use server.cfg for stable settings
Put the server’s persistent identity and core ConVars in garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg. Configure the hostname, password policy, RCON or other administration settings, and stable gameplay values there. Keeping these values in a file makes restarts predictable and prevents a temporary console change from being lost.
Set the map cycle and player count deliberately. A 16-slot test server and a large public server have different addon, CPU, memory, and moderation requirements; do not advertise more slots than the host can serve reliably.

Use ULX when live administration matters
TTT2 documentation says TTT ConVars can be placed in configuration files, but recommends ULX when you need to reconfigure and save settings while the server is running. Use a persistent configuration file for baseline values, then use your administration system for controlled live changes and permissions.
Recommended Free Tools
Set a browser region only when it is accurate
The sv_location setting controls the country or regional flag shown in the server browser. Facepunch documents ISO alpha-2-style values such as us and gb, plus the special value eu. Choose the value that reflects the server’s actual location; it is an identity hint, not a substitute for latency testing.
Mount external Source-game content
Some maps and addons depend on content from Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2, or another supported Source game. Garry’s Mod uses mount.cfg to point to those content directories. Follow the documented path format for the operating system and ensure the server account can read the mounted files.
Missing textures, models, or sounds are often a content-mount problem rather than a TTT problem. Confirm the required Source game is installed on the same machine, the path in mount.cfg is correct, and the server was restarted after changing the file. If only one map is affected, inspect that map’s dependency before changing the whole addon collection.
Open the port and make the server reachable
Use the actual configured port
The commonly documented default hosted-game connection port is 27015. If you change it, players must connect to the changed value, and the host firewall and provider panel must allow the same port. Configure inbound traffic for the protocol required by your host’s Source-server instructions rather than opening unrelated ports.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test locally, then externally
- Start the server and wait until the console reports that the map has loaded and Steam authentication has completed.
- From the same machine or local network, connect using the server’s local address and configured port.
- From a different network, test the public address. A local success followed by an external failure usually points to NAT, a host firewall, or a provider firewall rule.
- Only after both tests work should you rely on the public server browser and invite players.
Keep the process running after disconnects and reboots
Linux supervision
Run srcds_run under the dedicated service user and use a supervisor or reboot mechanism. Facepunch gives a crontab @reboot example and notes that a simple launcher does not, by itself, survive a reboot. A supervisor can restart the process after a crash, while an @reboot entry covers the host coming back online; choose a method that prevents duplicate instances.
Before planned maintenance, stop the process cleanly, run SteamCMD, inspect the update output, and start it again. Keep logs and the startup script in a location that survives normal configuration changes.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Windows restart planning
Use an equivalent scheduled-task or service-based plan. Configure the task to start after reboot, run under the account that owns the server files, and restart on failure. Test a full reboot rather than assuming the task will inherit an interactive command prompt’s working directory or environment.
Verify the server before inviting players
- Confirm the mode: the startup console should show
terrortown, not sandbox or another gamemode. - Confirm the map: the selected map should load without missing-file or change-level errors.
- Confirm Workshop completion: wait for the collection download and check for failed or incompatible items.
- Confirm GSLT authentication: look for successful Steam server-account handling and investigate any token error before moving on.
- Confirm identity: check the hostname, slot count, map, and region flag if you set
sv_location. - Join locally: verify that the TTT HUD, round flow, roles, weapons, and administration permissions behave as expected.
- Join externally: test from another network and confirm that a friend can connect.
- Test a restart: stop and start the process, then reboot the host if it is intended to be persistent. Verify that the same collection, map cycle, and settings return automatically.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server is not visible in the browser
- Check the startup console for an invalid, expired, or reused GSLT. Generate a unique token for this server and pass it with
+sv_setsteamaccount. - Confirm that the configured port, commonly
27015, is allowed in both the operating-system firewall and the hosting provider’s network panel. - Verify that the process is still running and has not exited after a Workshop, map, or mount error.
- Check that you did not launch with
-noworkshopor another flag that disables required Workshop content. Facepunch documents-noworkshopas a switch that disables Workshop addons. - Test a direct external connection. If direct connection works but the listing does not, focus on token, Steam registration, hostname, and browser-state issues rather than map gameplay.
Players see missing textures, models, or sounds
Identify whether the missing asset belongs to a Workshop addon or an external Source game. For external content, correct mount.cfg and verify the required game files. For Workshop content, confirm the item downloaded successfully and that the collection contains the dependency rather than only the map that references it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA map will not load
Confirm the map is in the server’s Workshop collection or installed files and that its name in the rotation is exact. Temporarily launch with a known-good map such as gm_flatgrass to separate a general server problem from a map-specific dependency or compatibility issue.
The server starts in the wrong mode
Inspect the command line for a missing or misspelled +gamemode terrortown. Check that a later configuration or launch script is not overriding the setting. Restart after changing the command line; a console change made after startup does not correct an incorrectly initialized process.
Updates fail or leave inconsistent files
Stop the server before running SteamCMD and validate the installation. Check disk space, file ownership, and permissions, especially when SteamCMD was run as a different account from the one that launches srcds_run.
The server disappears after a reboot
Implement the Linux supervisor or @reboot strategy, or the Windows scheduled-task/service equivalent, then test it. Ensure the startup mechanism uses absolute paths or the correct working directory and does not launch a second copy when the first process is already running.
Operate the server responsibly
- Keep the Workshop collection intentional and review addon compatibility after every major update.
- Use a separate GSLT per server and rotate a compromised token immediately.
- Update only while the server is stopped, then test the map, gamemode, Workshop downloads, and administration settings.
- Keep backups of
server.cfg, map-cycle settings, startup scripts, and any administration configuration. - Record the actual port, server location, collection ID, and restart method so another administrator can recover the server.
- For a public server, document moderation permissions and password policy before opening it to strangers.
When managed hosting is the better choice
If you do not want to administer SteamCMD, process supervision, Workshop collections, GSLTs, updates, and firewall rules, a managed Garry’s Mod game-server host can remove much of the operating-system work. Verify current TTT or TTT2 support, Workshop behavior, server geography, pricing, uptime terms, restart controls, and whether you can use your own collection and GSLT before committing. You still need to understand the mode, content, token, and port settings because those determine whether the hosted instance is actually a usable TTT server.
