How to set up a keyboard, gamepad, or steering wheel for JDM: Ph4ntom Driver

Short answer: connect your device before launching JDM: Ph4ntom Driver through Steam, then open the game’s expected steering or controls settings and select the matching Gamepad, Wheel, or Keyboard preset. If the released build offers the same binding tools documented for the related JDM title, use Quick Setup for basic actions or Custom Binding for complete control over every key, button, and axis.

There is an important limitation: JDM: Ph4ntom Driver is unreleased. Steam currently lists its release date as “To be announced,” and warns that system requirements can change. Its current metadata says Full Controller Support, Steam Input API support, Gamepad Preferred, and USB-only support for DualShock and DualSense controllers. Final menu names, keyboard defaults, wheel compatibility, force feedback, and calibration features have not been published.

What input support is confirmed right now?

The most reliable information is the current Steam metadata, not a finished in-game manual. It favors a gamepad and specifically identifies wired USB DualShock and DualSense use. That does not establish that every wireless mode, wheel, or keyboard layout will work in the launch build.

Device or feature Current status for Ph4ntom Driver What that means
Gamepad Steam marks the game “Full Controller Support” and “Gamepad Preferred.” A controller is the safest general-purpose choice based on the information currently published.
DualShock Listed as USB Only. Start with a wired USB connection rather than Bluetooth.
DualSense Listed as USB Only. Use a USB cable for the first setup attempt.
Steam Input Steam Input API Supported. Steam Input is an available troubleshooting route if the game does not see a pad directly.
Keyboard No final Ph4ntom Driver keyboard guide is published. A keyboard preset and remapping are reasonable expectations from the related JDM documentation, but not a confirmed final interface.
Steering wheel No Ph4ntom Driver model list or force-feedback specification is published. Do not assume a particular wheel, pedal set, or force-feedback mode will be supported until Gaming Factory documents it.

The related title JDM: Japanese Drift Master documents Gamepad, Wheel, and Keyboard preset families and says the preset can be changed in steering settings. Those instructions are useful as an expected workflow, not proof that Ph4ntom Driver will ship with identical labels or screens.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Prepare the device before starting the game

  1. Close Ph4ntom Driver if it is already running. Connect the intended input device first so Steam and the game can enumerate it during startup.
  2. Prefer USB for the first test. This matches the current title-specific metadata for DualShock and DualSense controllers and removes Bluetooth pairing and battery variables.
  3. Check Steam’s per-game controller page. In your Steam Library, open the game’s Properties and select the Controller section. The exact wording of the setting can change with Steam updates; if direct detection fails, try the option that enables Steam Input for this game.
  4. Disconnect competing devices temporarily. If several pads, virtual controllers, or a wheel are connected, the game may select a different device as player one. Test one physical device at a time.
  5. Launch from Steam after the device is ready. Keep the device connected while changing presets or bindings.

Set up a gamepad

Use a wired controller first

For a first run, connect a DualShock, DualSense, or another compatible pad with USB. Steam currently identifies DualShock and DualSense support as USB Only, so a wired connection is the least ambiguous test. The listing does not say that every third-party pad is supported directly.

Select the gamepad mode

  1. Open the game’s Settings, then look for Controls, Steering, or a similarly named input page. The final Ph4ntom Driver labels have not been released.
  2. Choose Gamepad if a device-preset selector is present. The Gamepad, Wheel, and Keyboard families are documented for the related JDM title, so this is the expected arrangement rather than a guaranteed menu path.
  3. Use the simplest assignment option first. If the screen offers Quick Setup, select the basic action and press the button or move the axis you want to use.
  4. Drive a short test section and check steering, throttle, brake, and handbrake response before changing advanced options.

When to use Steam Input

Steam Input API support is currently listed for Ph4ntom Driver. If the game does not detect a connected pad, return to the game’s Steam Properties, open Controller, and try enabling Steam Input. Restart the game after changing that setting. Steam Input can present a controller through a virtual layout, so avoid simultaneously assigning the same action in multiple layers if you see duplicate or conflicting inputs.

Set up a keyboard

A keyboard provides digital on/off inputs rather than the continuously variable steering and pedal axes of a gamepad or wheel. It can be the simplest arrangement for a desk setup, but small steering corrections are controlled by tapping or releasing keys instead of moving an analog stick.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the keyboard before launching the game.
  2. Open the expected Settings > Controls or Steering page.
  3. Select Keyboard if that preset is available.
  4. Run Quick Setup for the basic actions, or open Custom Binding to assign individual keys.
  5. Place steering, throttle, brake, handbrake, nitro, camera, pause, and menu actions on keys that do not conflict with one another.
  6. Test a low-speed turn and a full braking input. If steering feels too abrupt, use shorter taps or look for an in-game steering-rate or sensitivity option; do not assume a particular default value because Ph4ntom Driver’s keyboard settings have not been published.

The related JDM announcement confirms customizable key mapping for that game. It does not publish Ph4ntom Driver’s default keyboard layout, so any key arrangement shown by the unreleased game should be treated as the authority for that build.

  • Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
  • Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
  • Rumble vibration.
  • Support turbo function.

Set up a steering wheel and pedals

Connect and select the wheel preset

  1. Install the wheel manufacturer’s current driver and firmware, connect the wheel and pedal USB cables, and power the wheel before launching Steam.
  2. Open the game’s steering or controls page and choose Wheel if that preset exists.
  3. Bind the steering axis, throttle, brake, clutch, and handbrake separately. A wheel preset may populate some assignments, but verify each axis rather than assuming the pedal order is correct.
  4. Turn the wheel through its full range and press each pedal while watching for movement in the game’s binding or test screen, if one is provided.
  5. Save the configuration as a custom preset when the game offers that option.

What wheel compatibility is not yet known

The related JDM supported-devices page lists Logitech, Thrustmaster, PXN, MOZA, SIMAGIC, and FANATEC wheel and peripheral families. That is a compatibility list for JDM: Japanese Drift Master, not for Ph4ntom Driver. It cannot be used to promise support for a specific model here.

Gaming Factory has not published a Ph4ntom Driver wheel list, force-feedback behavior, steering lock range, pedal calibration procedure, or minimum firmware version. If the wheel turns but produces no force feedback, that absence is not enough to identify a fault: force feedback has not been confirmed for this title.

Quick Setup versus Custom Binding

The official control-binding guide for the related JDM title states: You can freely set up controls in 2 ways: using Quick Setup or Custom Binding. If Ph4ntom Driver retains those tools, the distinction should work as follows.

Quick Setup

Quick Setup asks you to press the desired button for each basic action. It is the fastest route when the preset is close to what you want. Use it after selecting Gamepad, Wheel, or Keyboard, and complete the requested actions in order. On a wheel, move the requested axis through its range when prompted rather than pressing a face button.

Custom Binding

Custom Binding exposes every action and lets you assign any key or button. It is the better choice when you need separate clutch and handbrake controls, a nonstandard keyboard layout, or a wheel pedal that was detected in an unexpected order. The related guide says you can save a new Custom preset. If that save command appears in Ph4ntom Driver, use it after testing every assignment.

Check inputs before driving

The related JDM guide describes an input-test screen that displays response values on a percentage scale for steering, throttle, brake, clutch, and handbrake. If Ph4ntom Driver includes a comparable diagnostic screen, use it before entering a race:

  • Center the wheel or release the analog stick and confirm that steering returns close to its neutral position.
  • Turn the steering gradually and look for a smooth increase instead of a permanently pinned value.
  • Press throttle, brake, clutch, and handbrake independently so you can identify crossed or duplicated axes.
  • Release each control and verify that it returns to zero or its neutral state.

This percentage-based diagnostic is documented for the related title only. Do not assume that Ph4ntom Driver will use the same screen, scale, dead-zone controls, or calibration labels.

Which device should you choose?

Option Steering character Setup effort Desk space Ph4ntom Driver evidence
Keyboard Digital; steering changes in discrete key presses. Lowest if a keyboard preset is present. Minimal. Not confirmed by title-specific documentation; customizable controls are documented for the related JDM game.
Gamepad Analog stick or trigger input allows finer changes than a keyboard. Low; USB is the recommended first test. Small. Strongest current indication: Full Controller Support, Gamepad Preferred, USB DualShock/DualSense metadata, and Steam Input API support.
Steering wheel Dedicated analog steering and pedals can offer the most physical control, subject to the game’s implementation. Highest; multiple axes and pedals require separate checks. Largest. No Ph4ntom Driver model list, force-feedback confirmation, or final wheel guide.

For the least uncertain setup today, use a wired USB gamepad. Choose a keyboard when convenience and space matter more than analog control. Choose a wheel only if you are willing to verify support in the released build and configure each axis yourself.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The gamepad is not detected

  • Exit the game, connect the controller by USB, and relaunch it.
  • In Steam Library > the game’s Properties > Controller, try enabling Steam Input, then restart the game.
  • Test with only one controller connected so another pad is not selected as player one.
  • Confirm that the operating system and Steam see the controller before opening the game.
  • If the controller works in Steam but not in the game, try the opposite Steam Input state after a full restart; prerelease builds can handle direct and virtual devices differently.

The wrong buttons or axes are assigned

  • Return to the device preset and run Custom Binding instead of accepting the automatic layout.
  • For a wheel, bind steering, throttle, brake, clutch, and handbrake one at a time and verify each movement in the test screen, if available.
  • Check for duplicate assignments created by both Steam Input and the in-game profile.
  • Save a new custom preset after the corrected layout works.

Steering is reversed or too sensitive

  • Look for an invert option on the affected axis and apply it only to that axis.
  • Recheck that the game is using the steering axis rather than a button or digital direction.
  • For a keyboard, remember that digital steering cannot provide the same gradual range as an analog stick or wheel; shorter taps are the available basic adjustment unless the game exposes a steering-rate control.

The wheel has no force feedback

Do not treat this as a confirmed Ph4ntom Driver feature failure. Force feedback has not been documented for the game. Verify that steering and pedals are detected, then wait for Gaming Factory’s final wheel guidance before assuming a particular wheel model or effect should work.

Bindings disappear after an update

Ph4ntom Driver is unreleased and its controls can change before launch. Keep a note or screenshot of your preferred assignments and recreate them through Custom Binding if a build resets its profile. A saved custom preset is useful when the option exists, but it is not a guarantee against changes in prerelease builds.

What to expect at release

The current listing is provisional. Steam’s “To be announced” release status and warning that requirements may change mean that the final control menu, supported hardware, wireless behavior, keyboard defaults, wheel models, force feedback, and diagnostic tools can still differ from this workflow.

Once the game ships, use its own Settings and device documentation as the final authority. Until then, the practical order is clear: start with a USB gamepad, select the matching preset if present, use Quick Setup for a fast assignment, switch to Custom Binding for detailed control, and test every input before driving.
