To create an automatic map cycle on a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, define a map group in game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txt, select that group with mapgroup <groupname>, and set the first map separately in the launch command or hosting panel. The first map only determines what loads initially; the selected group determines what can rotate afterward.

Back up the server file, use map names that are actually installed, and test every entry with a direct map or changelevel command before relying on automatic rotation. A map cycle is the server’s controlled pool of maps and the order in which they become available as matches end. Steam describes it as: “Map Cycle: Specifies the maps you wish to play and the order in which they appear.” In practice, a CS2 server uses two separate choices:
- Initial map: the map loaded when the server starts or when you deliberately change level.
- Map group: the named collection used for subsequent rotation, voting, or administrative changes.
Confusing those settings is the source of many apparently broken setups. Starting the server on one map does not create a rotation. Conversely, defining a group does nothing until the server has selected that group. Treat the startup map and the map group as separate configuration jobs.

Prepare the server before editing
Confirm that you are editing a CS2 dedicated server
Work inside the server’s CS2 installation, specifically the game/csgo/ tree. File names and panel labels can vary between self-managed installations and hosts, so first identify the directory that contains the live server executable and the current gamemodes_server.txt. Do not assume that a guide written for an older game build still matches your files.
Server conventions, Workshop handling, and panel controls can change with CS2 updates. Compare the file structure on your build with a current example from your host or Valve documentation before copying a block. If the file has been reorganized by an update, preserve the structure already present instead of replacing it with a complete file from another version.

Make a recoverable backup
- Stop the server cleanly so that no configuration is being written while you edit.
- Copy
game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txtto a dated backup outside the live configuration directory. - Record the current startup command, active game mode, and map-group value from the panel or console.
- Make one logical change at a time. A backup is useful only if you can identify which change caused a failure.
Keep the file’s KeyValues braces, capitalization, and nesting intact. A single missing brace can prevent the server from reading unrelated settings, making a map-rotation problem look like a game-mode problem.
List the maps you intend to use
Write down the exact internal map names, not the names shown in a launcher or a workshop page title. Every name in the group must correspond to content installed on the dedicated server. For a stock map, verify the name by loading it directly. For custom content, verify the server-side file installation first; a map that exists only on your client cannot rotate on the server.
Define a map group in gamemodes_server.txt
Use the file’s current KeyValues shape
Open game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txt and locate the map-group area. CS2 expects map groups to be declared through this server-side KeyValues configuration. Do not paste a CS:GO-only recipe that creates cfg/mapgroup_<groupname>.cfg unless your particular build and host explicitly document that file as supported.
The following is a representative shape, not a universal drop-in file. Copy the surrounding structure from your installation, give the group a unique name, and replace the example keys with maps installed on your server:

}Some distributions place this block inside a larger game-type structure or use a slightly different value format. The safe rule is to preserve the keys and nesting already used by the current file, then add or edit only the map-group entry. The group name in the outer key, the value of name, and the name supplied to mapgroup must agree.

Choose a useful group name
Use a short, descriptive identifier such as mg_evening_mix or mg_competitive_pool. Avoid spaces and punctuation that your panel or console may interpret as separators. If you maintain several pools, make their purpose obvious: a tightly curated tournament pool, a larger public pool, and a Workshop-only pool are easier to troubleshoot than several groups named “test” or “new.”
Order maps deliberately
Place entries in the order you want the server to present them. A fixed sequence is appropriate when you are running a scheduled event or want a predictable warm-up and match progression. A broader group is better when players should vote or administrators should choose among several maps. The group is a pool and an order; it is not a substitute for the voting or administrative policy that decides which eligible map is loaded next.
Do not mix unavailable content into the group
One misspelled or missing entry can produce a skipped map or a “map not found” error. Start with a small group containing maps you have already loaded successfully. Add additional entries only after each one passes a direct load test. This incremental method also makes it clear whether a failure comes from the group definition or from the map installation itself.
Select the group and load the initial map
Set the active group in the server console
After saving the file and restarting or reloading the configuration as required by your host, issue:
mapgroup <groupname>For the representative group above, the command would be mapgroup mg_my_rotation. A commonly documented pattern is mapgroup mg_active; the important part is that the name exactly matches the group declared in the file. Confirm in the console that the command was accepted and that the intended group is active.
Managed panels often expose the same setting as Map Group. Select the group there, save the server configuration, and follow the panel’s restart or apply process. Do not set a panel group and a conflicting console group at the same time while diagnosing a problem; choose one control path, verify it, and then document the result.
Set the first map separately
Choose the startup map in the launch command or in the panel’s startup-map field. The exact syntax depends on the host, but the result should be equivalent to loading one valid map after the server starts. If you have already selected the group, load the initial map afterward so you can observe the complete sequence in the console.

Changing the initial map does not rewrite the group. Likewise, changing the group does not necessarily change the map currently in play. Think of mapgroup as selecting the rotation policy and map or changelevel as selecting the level that is loaded now.
Configure when the server advances
A map group only identifies the eligible maps. The server’s mode and round or time limits determine when a map ends and the next one is initialized. Steam’s dedicated-server documentation describes cycling in terms of map-time or maximum-win settings, so configure limits appropriate to the mode you are running rather than assuming that the group itself controls match length.
Check the game mode before testing
Valve’s game-mode documentation explains that game_type, game_mode, and related settings determine how the next map is initialized. If a level loads with unexpected rules, inspect those values before editing the map group. A correct group can appear broken when the server starts the next map under a different mode than intended.
Keep mode and rotation changes together
When you change both the map pool and the game mode, apply the changes in a controlled order: save the group, select it, set the mode, then load a known map. Test one complete match transition before adding more complexity. This isolates errors caused by mode initialization from errors caused by map selection.
Install and rotate custom maps
Local or custom server files
Steam requires a custom map to be installed in the dedicated-server directory before it can be used in a map cycle. Upload or install the map on the server, confirm that the server recognizes the files, and then test the exact map name with a direct map or changelevel command. Only after that test succeeds should you add the name to the group.
Clients may still need to download the map separately, depending on how you distribute custom content. That client-delivery question is distinct from rotation: the server must be able to load the map before it can offer it, regardless of whether players already have a copy.
Workshop maps
For Workshop content, current hosting instructions use host_workshop_map <numeric_id> for a single map or host_workshop_collection <numeric_id> for a collection. A provider may instead offer an add-on manager that keeps several Workshop IDs available. Follow the mechanism supported by your server build and panel, and wait for the content to download before trying to select it.

Workshop IDs are not necessarily the map names used inside a map group. Once the content is available on the server, identify the usable internal map name and place that name in the selected group, or use the provider’s documented collection workflow. If a Workshop map works immediately after a download command but disappears after a restart, the startup command or add-on configuration is not restoring the content; fix persistence before debugging the group.
Separate installation problems from rotation problems
Use this order when a custom or Workshop entry fails:
- Confirm that the server downloaded or installed the content.
- Confirm the exact internal map name.
- Load the map directly.
- Only then test it through the map group.
If direct loading fails, editing gamemodes_server.txt cannot solve the underlying installation or naming problem.
Verify the cycle before inviting players
Check the active group
Read the server console after issuing mapgroup. You should see evidence that the requested group was accepted. If the console reports an unknown group, check spelling, capitalization, braces, and whether the server actually reloaded the edited file.

For each entry, run a direct load using the map name. A successful test proves that the server can find and initialize the level. Record any map that fails and remove it from the group until its installation is corrected. Testing only the first map is not enough: one broken entry can interrupt an otherwise valid rotation.
Test an actual transition
After direct loads succeed, start on the chosen initial map and let the configured round or time limit end, or use your normal administrative transition command. Confirm that the next map comes from the selected group and that it starts under the intended mode. If the server stays on the same map, inspect group selection first; if it moves to an unexpected map, inspect the group order, voting controls, and any administrative command that may have overridden the cycle.
Keep a short verification record
For a production server, record the group name, map order, installation method for custom content, mode settings, and the date of the last successful transition test. This is especially useful after a CS2 update or a hosting-panel migration, when file locations and controls may change.

Both workflows ultimately need the same facts: a valid installed map, a defined group, an active group selection, and a separately chosen initial map. A panel is not a different rotation system; it is another way to write or expose the server settings.

Troubleshoot the common failures
The server follows an old CS:GO tutorial but nothing changes
Current CS2 hosting documentation warns that cfg/mapgroup_<groupname>.cfg may not exist and that the old retail mapcycle.txt workflow is not the supported primary method. Recheck the server build, locate the live game/csgo/gamemodes_server.txt, and define the group there using the file’s existing KeyValues shape. Remove obsolete files only after confirming that no other server feature still depends on them.
A map loads manually but never appears in rotation
This usually means the group was not selected, the edited file was not reloaded, or a panel overwrote the value. Issue mapgroup <groupname>, confirm the active group in the console, and make sure the group name matches exactly. Then test a normal transition rather than judging the result from the current map alone.
The console reports “map not found” or skips an entry
Verify the server-side installation and exact internal name. A map title, Workshop page title, and internal level name can differ. Load the map directly; if that fails, repair the installation or spelling before changing rotation settings. Once the direct command succeeds, add the entry back to the group and retest.
A Workshop map works once but disappears after restart
The server is not restoring the Workshop content during startup. Use the appropriate host_workshop_map or host_workshop_collection startup mechanism, or configure the provider’s add-on manager as documented for your build. Confirm that the download has completed before selecting the group. A map group cannot load content that is absent when the server starts.
The next map starts with the wrong rules
Inspect game_type, game_mode, and related mode settings. Valve’s game-mode behavior determines how the next map is initialized, so a mode mismatch can look like a rotation failure. Apply the intended mode before loading a known map and verify the transition again.
The server loads the wrong map first
Check the startup-map field or launch command separately from the group. The initial map is independent of the group definition. Correct the startup value, restart or apply the panel setting, and leave the group unchanged unless the rotation pool itself is wrong.
Editing the file causes broader configuration errors
Restore the last known-good backup, then compare braces and nesting line by line. Reapply only the map-group change using the current file as the template. Avoid replacing the entire file with a sample from another CS2 build; unrelated game-mode settings may have changed.
A safe maintenance routine
- Before each planned change, back up
gamemodes_server.txtand note the current group and startup map. - Install or update one map at a time.
- Direct-load the map and confirm that it starts under the intended mode.
- Add the verified map to the group while preserving the existing KeyValues structure.
- Select the group with
mapgroup <groupname>or the panel’s Map Group control. - Load a known initial map and test one full transition.
- Keep the verification record so an update, restart, or host migration can be compared with a known-good state.
This routine minimizes downtime because each failure has a narrow cause: installation, naming, file syntax, group selection, startup-map choice, or mode initialization.
