Insert a PlayStation 2 Memory Card (8MB) into either front MEMORY CARD slot, then follow the game’s own instructions to save. If the game does not detect the card, check its instructions: some software requires a particular slot. A PS2-format game needs a PS2-format card, not the original PlayStation SCPH-1020 card.
Which memory card does a PS2 game need?
For PS2-format games, use a PlayStation 2 Memory Card (8MB). Sony’s SCPH-90002/SCPH-90003 PlayStation 2 User Guide identifies the PS2 card as an 8MB product and distinguishes it from the SCPH-1020 E card made for original PlayStation software. Sony’s PS2 user guide does not establish compatibility or reliability differences among third-party cards.
The formats are not interchangeable for saving and loading. A PS2 game cannot save or copy its data to an SCPH-1020 E card. Original PlayStation game data cannot be saved directly to a PS2 8MB card either. It can be copied to the PS2 card for storage, but cannot be loaded directly from that card.
How to insert the card and save a game
- With the console accessible, insert the PS2 Memory Card into a MEMORY CARD slot on the front of the console.
- Start the game and follow its on-screen instructions to save. The save and load procedure varies by game; consult the instructions supplied with the software for the exact steps.
- If the game does not recognize the card, check its instructions for a required slot and try that slot.
How to copy or delete saved data
Use the PS2 Browser to manage save files rather than relying on a universal in-game sequence:

Keep the card inserted while data is being copied or deleted; removing it before the operation finishes can interrupt the process.

Rank #3
- TWO SEPARATE 128 MB BANKS, NOT ONE POOL OF 256 MB: The selector on the front of the card chooses which bank the console talks to, and each bank is its own storage area with its own save list. Nothing spans the two, so a file written on one side is invisible from the other. Set the selector first and then turn the console on, because the console reads the position once at start-up and does not look again.
- BUILT FOR PS2 AND FOR THE SLIM, AND FOR NOTHING ELSE: It drops into the memory card slot made for PS2, on every revision from the first SCPH-10000 through to the 90000 series, fat or slim. It is not for the PS One, not for the PSX, and not for a fat PS3 running a disc in backward compatible mode. Those machines use a different card and will not read this one.
- IT IS A STORAGE CARD, AND IT WILL NOT RUN FREEMCBOOT: If the plan is to install a homebrew launcher, this is the wrong card and no amount of formatting will change that. What it does do is hold save files, and a lot of them, which is the job most people actually need a second card for.
- NO BOOT DISC, NO DRIVERS, NOTHING TO INSTALL: Push it into the slot and the console lists it straight away. Save sizes vary by title, and the back of a game case usually prints how many kilobytes a save needs, so you can work out how far one bank will go before you fill it.
- WHAT ARRIVES IS ONE BLACK CARD, 5.6 BY 4.1 BY 0.6 CM: Two habits keep a save file intact on any card of this kind: leave the console powered down while the card goes in or comes out, and do not cut the power while a title is writing.

- Follow the game’s own save instructions, since the menu and procedure differ by software.
