The reliable way to run a modded Minecraft server with AMP on a VPS is to match the Minecraft release, Java runtime, and mod loader before you upload anything. Create the AMP instance with that exact combination, install the modpack’s dedicated server files, accept the EULA, open only the required ports, and automate backups before inviting players.

This guide covers a Linux VPS deployment, but AMP itself is a self-hosted control panel that runs on Linux and Windows. The menu names below follow AMP’s Minecraft Java workflow; individual edition limits and interface details can vary with the AMP release you install.

What AMP does for a modded Minecraft VPS
AMP provides a web control panel for creating and operating game-server instances. For Minecraft, it can create an instance, select a server type and release, manage files through its file manager or SFTP, start and stop the process, install or update supported mods and plugins, and schedule maintenance and backups. That removes much of the repetitive shell work, but it does not remove the need to choose compatible software or secure the VPS.
A VPS gives you a public address, dedicated virtual resources, and control over the operating system. You remain responsible for sizing the machine, applying updates, configuring both layers of firewall, protecting the AMP panel, and keeping copies of your world outside the server. Modded workloads are less forgiving than a small vanilla server, especially when a pack has many entities, world-generation tasks, or large disk activity.

Plan the VPS before installing AMP
Choose resources for the pack, not vanilla Minecraft
There is no universal RAM figure that fits every modpack. Use the pack author’s server requirements as the starting point, then leave headroom for the operating system, AMP, Java overhead, world growth, and the number of concurrent players. A pack that starts successfully with a few players can still run out of memory or stall when several players explore new terrain at once.
- CPU: Prioritize strong single-core performance and sustained CPU availability. Tick processing and many mod systems are limited by one or a few busy cores; a plan advertising many slower virtual cores is not automatically faster.
- Memory: Allocate enough for the loader, mods, world, and player count while retaining operating-system headroom. Treat the pack’s documentation and observed garbage-collection behavior as the authority rather than an arbitrary “Minecraft RAM” rule.
- Storage: Prefer fast SSD or NVMe storage. Chunk generation, region-file writes, backups, and large mod libraries all create disk I/O, and slow storage can produce pauses even when CPU usage looks acceptable.
- Network: Check sustained bandwidth, transfer limits, datacenter location, and latency to your players. Also read the provider’s acceptable-use rules for game servers and automated backups.
- Recovery features: Snapshots are useful for whole-machine recovery, but they should supplement application-level world backups rather than replace them.
Secure the operating system first
- Create a non-root administrative account and use it for routine work. Keep root access only for tasks that genuinely require it.
- Apply the operating system’s security updates before installing the panel or Java.
- Enable the VPS provider firewall and the operating system firewall. You will later allow the AMP panel port and the Minecraft game port explicitly.
- Restrict the panel to trusted addresses or a VPN when practical. A public game port may need to be reachable by players, but the administration interface does not.
- Record the VPS public address, operating-system distribution, administrator account, and the ports you intend to use in a secure password manager.
Match Minecraft, the loader, and Java
Java compatibility is the most common preventable cause of a server that exits immediately. The runtime must satisfy both the Minecraft release and the selected loader. Always check the modpack’s own server instructions because a pack can impose a stricter requirement than the general loader documentation.

After installing the selected runtime, run java -version in the account that will launch the instance. If more than one Java version is installed, make sure AMP’s instance uses the intended executable rather than whichever version happens to be first in the system path. A class-version error is evidence of a Java mismatch, not a reason to add random JVM flags.
Install AMP on the VPS
Use CubeCoders’ Linux installer for a Linux VPS and complete the first-run wizard in the browser. The installer reports the address and port to use when connecting. AMP includes its own web server; the commonly documented default panel port is 8080, but confirm the value shown by your installation before changing firewall rules.
- Log in to the VPS with the non-root administrative account and run the official AMP Linux installer according to its current instructions.
- Complete the wizard, create the AMP administrator credentials, and note the generated instance and panel information.
- Open the panel in a browser using the reported address and port. If you changed the panel port during setup, use that value instead of 8080.
- Allow the panel port in the provider and operating-system firewalls only for the addresses that need administration. If you must expose it temporarily, use a strong unique password and remove broad access afterward.
- Confirm that AMP can start and stop a test instance before importing a large modpack. This separates a panel or service problem from a modpack problem.
Create the Minecraft Java instance
In AMP, create a Minecraft Java instance, then open its Minecraft Server Settings. Select the exact Minecraft release and server type used by the pack. AMP’s server-type choices can include Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Paper, Spigot, or Official; choosing a similar-sounding loader is not sufficient.

Set the base instance options
- Server type and version: Match the pack’s loader and Minecraft version exactly, including any release or build requirement documented by the pack.
- Game port: Keep the default only if this is the sole Minecraft instance. Assign a unique port to every additional instance.
- LAN visibility: Leave LAN discovery disabled on a remote VPS. Players should connect through the VPS address or DNS name.
- Player and world settings: Set the MOTD, difficulty, whitelist behavior, operator permissions, view distance, simulation distance, and player cap after the base server starts.
- Identity: Give the instance a clear name that identifies its pack and Minecraft release. This prevents you from applying a backup or update to the wrong world later.
Save the settings before uploading files. Starting with a clean instance lets AMP generate the expected directory structure and makes it easier to tell which files came from the loader and which came from the modpack.

Prepare and upload the modpack
Use the dedicated server pack
A client archive is not automatically a server installation. Prefer the modpack author’s dedicated server pack, which should contain the server-side loader files, mods, configuration, libraries, scripts, and any required world or data directories. Client-only launchers and cosmetic files can cause missing-dependency errors or waste storage on the VPS.
Transfer the files into AMP
- Stop the newly created AMP instance.
- Open AMP’s integrated file manager or connect through SFTP using the instance account and directory shown by AMP.
- Upload the dedicated server archive and extract it into the instance directory. Preserve the directory names and relative paths; do not place the contents one level too deep inside an extra folder unless the pack instructions require it.
- Check that the instance root contains the loader launch files and the expected
mods, configuration, libraries, and scripts directories. - If AMP’s catalog offers an installer for the pack, you can use it instead of manual transfer, but verify the resulting Minecraft, loader, and mod versions before starting.
Keep the client and server lists aligned. Test the client pack first, then compare its mod names and versions with the server pack. Some mods are client-only, but a required server dependency cannot be omitted simply because the client starts without an obvious error.
First launch, EULA, and server properties
Start the clean or imported instance once. Minecraft normally creates eula.txt and server.properties during this initialization. The process will stop until the EULA is accepted.
- Stop the instance if AMP has left it running or in a failed state.
- Open the
eula.txtfile in the instance directory that AMP is actually launching. - Read the Minecraft EULA and change
eula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree to it. Save the file without changing its name or location. - Review
server.propertiesand the corresponding AMP settings. Confirm the game port, level name, difficulty, whitelist, view distance, simulation distance, and player limit. - Start the instance again and watch the console until it reports that the server is ready. The first run can take longer while libraries load and terrain is generated.
If AMP still reports an EULA failure, check the path rather than editing another copy of the file. A second eula.txt elsewhere on the VPS does not affect the instance AMP launches.

Open the right ports and test connectivity
The web panel and the Minecraft game server are separate services with separate ports. AMP commonly uses 8080 for its panel. Java Minecraft servers commonly use 25565, but the authoritative value is the game port configured in your AMP instance and generated properties.

- Confirm the game port in AMP and in the generated server properties.
- Allow that TCP port in the VPS provider firewall.
- Allow the same port in the operating-system firewall.
- Check that the server process is listening on the expected address and port using the operating system’s normal network tools.
- Connect from a Minecraft client using the VPS public IP or DNS name and the configured port. Test from outside the VPS network when possible.
Do not expose the AMP panel broadly just because the game port must be public. Use HTTPS, address restrictions, or a VPN appropriate to your setup. If DNS is involved, confirm that its record points to the current VPS address and allow time for a changed record to propagate.
Configure access and gameplay after the base boot
Once the server reaches its ready state, configure operational controls in AMP or the Minecraft console:
- Enable a whitelist before sharing the address if the server is private.
- Grant operator permissions only to trusted accounts, and remove temporary operator access after administrative work.
- Set the MOTD and player cap so the public listing reflects the resources you actually have.
- Adjust view and simulation distance conservatively. Higher values increase chunk work, memory use, and network traffic.
- Run a short test with one or two clients before announcing the server. Walk into new terrain, use the pack’s major systems, and watch CPU, memory, disk I/O, and tick time.
Schedule backups before making the server public
AMP includes scheduled backups and backup exclusions. Configure them before changing mods, loaders, worlds, or server properties.

- Create a full backup while the instance is stopped, or use AMP’s documented safe-backup method so region files are consistent.
- Schedule regular backups at an interval that matches how much player progress you can afford to lose. Busy survival servers need more frequent points than an occasional test server.
- Retain several restore points rather than keeping only the newest archive.
- Exclude caches and other regenerable files when AMP’s exclusion controls identify them. Do not exclude world data, configuration, scripts, or mod files needed to reproduce the server.
- Copy critical backups to storage outside the VPS. A disk failure, accidental deletion, compromised account, or provider incident can destroy every copy stored on the same machine.
- Record which Minecraft, loader, and mod versions each backup used. A world backup without its matching server files may not restore cleanly.
Test a restore
Periodically stop a disposable or cloned instance and restore the newest known-good backup. Confirm that the world opens, player data exists, and the expected mod list loads. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

Update mods and loaders without risking the world
Modded updates can change registries, world-generation behavior, configuration formats, or required Java versions. Treat every update as a change window.
- Announce downtime and stop the instance cleanly.
- Take a fresh backup and copy it off the VPS.
- Write down the current Minecraft release, loader build, Java version, mod versions, and configuration changes.
- Read the pack or mod release notes for migration instructions and incompatible dependencies.
- Update a staging copy first when the world is valuable. Start it with the same Java runtime and verify that the console reaches the ready state.
- Join with a matching client and inspect existing bases, inventories, dimensions, and important machines or blocks.
- Apply the tested change to production, then monitor logs, tick time, CPU, memory, and disk I/O during the first session.
Never overwrite the only working pack with an untested loader or mod archive. If the update behaves badly, stop the instance and restore the previous server files and world together.

The correct loader is determined by the pack, not by a general performance preference. Compare the options on compatibility with the mods you intend to run and on the Java release they document.

AMP also exposes server types such as Paper, Spigot, and Official for other server designs. Selecting one of those for a Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge modpack will not make the pack compatible.
Diagnose the problems that appear most often
The process exits immediately or reports a class-version error
Run java -version as the same account AMP uses, then compare the result with the Minecraft, loader, and pack requirements. Correct the instance’s Java selection or install the required runtime before changing memory flags. A class-version error normally indicates that the Java major version is too old or otherwise incompatible.

Mods or dependencies are missing
Compare the uploaded server pack with the client pack and the pack’s manifest. Verify the loader, Minecraft release, mod versions, required libraries, and directory layout. A client-only archive, an extra nested folder, or a missing dependency can all produce similar console messages.

The EULA check keeps failing
Open the instance directory shown in AMP and confirm that its eula.txt contains eula=true. Editing a file in a different installation directory has no effect. Save the file, then restart the instance.
Players cannot connect
Confirm the configured game port, provider firewall, operating-system firewall, DNS record, and listening address. Make sure you are testing the Minecraft port rather than the AMP panel port. If the server is bound only to a private interface, correct the server networking setting before troubleshooting the client.
The server lags or watchdog timeouts occur
Inspect CPU saturation and disk I/O first. Modded workloads are frequently CPU-bound, and chunk generation or backup activity can expose slow storage. Reduce view or simulation distance, limit simultaneous exploration, and move to a VPS with stronger single-core performance or faster storage when measurements show the machine is the bottleneck. Do not treat arbitrary Java flags as a substitute for adequate resources.
The world is corrupted after an update
Stop the instance immediately and preserve the current files for diagnosis. Restore the newest known-good backup to a separate or stopped instance, using the matching Minecraft, loader, Java, and mod versions recorded with that backup. Only return the restored world to production after it opens and passes a basic gameplay check.

- VPS operating system and AMP are updated.
- Java version matches the pack and is confirmed with
java -version. - AMP panel access is restricted; the Minecraft game port is the only broadly exposed service.
- Instance version, loader, game port, and server directory are documented.
- Dedicated server files, not merely a client archive, are installed.
- Whitelist and operator permissions reflect the intended audience.
- Scheduled backups run, retain multiple restore points, and have off-site copies.
- A restore test has succeeded on a stopped or disposable instance.
- Updates are tested against a backup before production deployment.
- CPU, memory, tick time, storage, and network behavior are reviewed after major changes.
With those controls in place, AMP handles the repeatable administration while the VPS supplies the resources and network endpoint. The critical decisions remain exact version matching, conservative exposure of the panel, and a recovery process that has been tested rather than merely configured.
