Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set up a new Windows gaming laptop in this order: finish the first-run Windows setup with an internet connection, run Windows Update until no important updates remain, inspect Device Manager for missing hardware, install model-specific packages from the laptop maker, then install graphics software that matches the actual GPU. Configure display, power, security, and game settings only after the system is current. Do not assume that every laptop needs a BIOS flash, every optional driver, or a clean Windows reinstall.
Before you turn it on
Keep the charger connected during setup and updates. Have your Wi-Fi password, Microsoft account details, and purchase information available. The purchase record or chassis label can help identify the exact product number later; gaming-laptop families often contain several hardware revisions with different drivers.

- Use the supplied power adapter rather than relying on battery power for firmware or large update jobs.
- Note the full model name and product number, not just the family name printed on the lid.
- Keep a second device available if the laptop cannot connect to Wi-Fi during setup; Microsoft says the wireless-adapter package can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s official site on another device and transferred by USB.
- Do not install a third-party driver-updater application. Microsoft advises obtaining drivers through Windows Update, Device Manager, or the hardware maker’s official support site.
Complete Windows first-run setup
Start the laptop and follow the on-screen prompts for region, keyboard layout, network, account, privacy, and device-name choices. Connect to the internet as soon as possible. Microsoft says internet access helps Windows deliver current features, security updates, and drivers, and an internet connection is required to finish setup for Windows Home and Windows Pro.
If Wi-Fi is missing on the first screen
A new laptop can reach the setup screen before Windows has a usable wireless driver. First, check whether an Ethernet connection or a phone hotspot is practical. If the adapter is still unavailable, use another computer to download the wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Copy the installer to a USB drive, run it on the new laptop, restart, and then reconnect to Windows setup. Do not substitute a similarly named package for a different model.

Privacy and account choices
Read each privacy prompt rather than accepting every switch automatically. Location, diagnostics, advertising, and app-permission settings can be changed later in Settings > Privacy & security. A Microsoft account simplifies synchronization and Store access, but the appropriate account choice depends on how the laptop will be used. Whichever account you choose, record the recovery information before you begin installing games.
Run Windows Update in repeated passes
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install the available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it. A restart can complete servicing tasks that cannot run while the system is in use.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again. Continue until a new check no longer presents important updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates and review the driver list separately instead of installing every item automatically.
Windows installs recommended drivers automatically. Some optional driver packages are exposed for manual selection, but “optional” does not mean “required for every laptop.” Read the device name, version, and date, and install an optional package when it addresses hardware that is not working or when the laptop maker specifically directs you to use it.
When an update appears stuck
- Keep the charger connected and allow the restart to finish; interrupting an update can leave the system in an incomplete state.
- After Windows starts, run Windows Update again rather than assuming the first pass covered everything.
- If the same package repeatedly fails, record its name and error code. Check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for a model-specific package before trying a generic replacement.
Check hardware in Device Manager
Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and choosing Device Manager, or by entering devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog. Expand the categories and look for a yellow warning icon, an “Unknown device” entry, or a component that is absent from the expected category.

- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties to read its status and hardware identifiers.
- Use the exact laptop model and the identifier to locate a package on the computer maker’s official support page.
- Download the package that matches your Windows edition and system architecture, then close other applications.
- Run the installer, accept the requested restart, and check Device Manager again.
Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance is a fallback when Windows Update cannot find a compatible driver. Microsoft also advises against downloading drivers from sites other than the hardware manufacturer’s official site. A generic package from a component maker can be useful when the laptop maker does not provide a current release, but compatibility with the laptop’s power management, hotkeys, and graphics switching should take priority.
Use the laptop manufacturer’s support page
Find the support page by searching the manufacturer’s own site for the full product number. Typical downloads include chipset, storage-controller, network, audio, touchpad, card-reader, hotkey, control-center, firmware, and graphics packages. Read the release notes and installation order shown for your model.
Why there is no universal driver order
Vendor instructions differ. MSI publishes notebook driver-order recommendations, while Intel’s documentation for one laptop kit identifies a BIOS prerequisite. Those examples demonstrate why a sequence for one model should not be treated as a rule for all gaming laptops.
| Situation | Best source and action | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Windows is missing a common device driver | Run Windows Update; if it still fails, use the exact model’s official support page. | That every device needs a manual download. |
| The maker publishes an installation order | Follow that model-specific order, including any required restarts. | That another brand’s order is interchangeable. |
| A component vendor offers a newer package | Confirm the laptop maker’s compatibility notes and the supported Windows version first. | That the newest generic package is automatically best. |
| A BIOS or firmware file is listed | Read the exact model’s instructions and apply it only for a stated fix or prerequisite. | That a BIOS flash is mandatory on day one. |
Install graphics drivers that match your hardware
Identify the graphics arrangement before downloading anything. In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, and in Device Manager under Display adapters, you may see integrated graphics, a discrete GPU, or both. Gaming laptops commonly use a combination, so installing a package for the wrong vendor can fail or remove laptop-specific switching features.
Choose the appropriate package
- Laptop-maker package: Prefer this when it includes the validated power-management, display-switching, hotkey, or control-center integration for your model.
- Component-vendor package: Use the GPU maker’s official instructions when the laptop maker directs you to do so or does not provide a suitable current package. Verify the exact GPU and Windows build first.
- Integrated and discrete graphics: Install the packages required for both adapters when both appear in Device Manager; do not disable one simply because games use the other.
AMD compatibility example
AMD’s documented Adrenalin installation example is version 26.1.1 and uses an RX 9070. The cited compatibility list covers Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later for supported Radeon systems. These are version-sensitive requirements, not a reason to install Adrenalin on a laptop without supported Radeon hardware. Confirm the current operating-system and GPU requirements on AMD’s official page before proceeding.

After the graphics install
Restart even if the installer does not insist. Reopen Device Manager to confirm the adapter has no warning icon, then open Settings > System > Display and verify that the expected resolution and refresh-rate choices are available. If the discrete GPU is missing, reinstall the laptop maker’s chipset and graphics-switching packages before trying a different generic driver.
BIOS and firmware: update only for a reason
A BIOS update is model-specific maintenance, not an automatic first-day task. Read the support page for the exact product, check the current BIOS version, and apply an update when the manufacturer documents a relevant fix, security correction, compatibility requirement, or prerequisite.
How to check the current BIOS version
- Press
Win+R, entermsinfo32, and press Enter. - Read BIOS Version/Date and the System Model fields.
- Compare both values with the manufacturer’s support page before downloading firmware.
Intel’s documentation gives a narrow example: the NUC M15 Laptop Kit (LAPBCx10) should be at BIOS 0071 or newer before a Windows 11 upgrade. That requirement applies to the named kit, not to gaming laptops generally. Back up important files, connect AC power, close applications, and follow the maker’s recovery instructions if you do perform a firmware update. Never shut down the laptop while the firmware process is writing.
Essential Windows settings after updates
Confirm the display refresh rate
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select the panel’s intended refresh rate. A new installation can default to a lower rate, making games feel less responsive even though the hardware is capable of more. If a high-refresh option is absent, revisit the graphics and chipset packages rather than forcing an unsupported setting.
Select a suitable power mode
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery. Use a balanced mode for ordinary work and choose a higher-performance mode when plugged in and gaming, if your Windows edition and laptop firmware expose that option. Performance modes increase heat, fan noise, and power use; they are not a substitute for the manufacturer’s thermal or GPU-control utility.
Set application graphics preferences
In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add a game executable only when Windows is choosing the wrong adapter. The available preference labels vary by Windows version and driver, so verify the result in the GPU vendor’s overlay or the game’s own graphics information. Avoid forcing every application to the discrete GPU: browsers and office apps can use more battery and generate unnecessary heat.
Keep security protections enabled
- Open Windows Security and confirm that virus protection, firewall protection, and device security do not show warnings.
- Leave Windows Update enabled; gaming performance does not require disabling security updates.
- Use a strong account password and configure recovery methods before storing game saves or personal files locally.
Choose where games and captures are stored
Check free space in Settings > System > Storage before installing a large library. In the Xbox or other game launcher settings, select the intended SSD and create a clearly named library folder. Keep several gigabytes available for Windows servicing, shader caches, and temporary files rather than filling the boot drive completely.

Install the laptop’s control utility carefully
Many manufacturers offer a control-center application for fan profiles, keyboard lighting, charging limits, display modes, or GPU switching. Install it only from the official support page or the Microsoft Store listing linked by the maker. Read which services it adds and whether a firmware package is bundled. If the utility is optional and you do not need its controls, Windows can generally operate without it; do not install several utilities that attempt to manage the same fan or GPU settings.

Useful first checks in the utility
- Confirm that the utility identifies the same model and GPU shown in Windows.
- Record the default fan and performance profile before changing it.
- Look for a battery-charge limit feature if the laptop will remain plugged in for long periods, and follow the maker’s explanation of its thresholds.
- Use the utility’s update page only for packages intended for that exact model.
Validate the setup before installing a large game library
- Restart once after the final driver installation.
- Open Device Manager and confirm that the main categories contain no warning icons.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, speakers, microphone, webcam, touchpad, keyboard shortcuts, and every display output.
- Connect the charger and verify that the laptop reports AC power and the expected battery status.
- Open a simple 3D application or game and confirm that the intended GPU is active.
- Create a restore point by searching Windows for Create a restore point, selecting the system drive, choosing Configure if protection is off, and then selecting Create.
A restore point is useful for rolling back certain driver and system changes, but it is not a replacement for a separate backup of personal files or game saves.
Troubleshooting common first-day problems
The laptop has no Wi-Fi
Use Ethernet or another computer to obtain the exact wireless package from the laptop maker. Install the chipset package if the maker lists it as a prerequisite, restart, and then install the wireless package. Check the physical wireless key or airplane-mode setting after Windows loads.
Games use the integrated GPU
Confirm that both display adapters appear without errors, install the laptop maker’s graphics-switching package, and set a per-game preference under Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Some models change GPU mode in the manufacturer’s control utility or require a restart after switching modes; follow that model’s instructions.

A driver installer says the hardware is unsupported
Stop and verify the GPU model, Windows edition, architecture, and laptop product number. An installer for a desktop GPU, a different mobile revision, or another operating system will not become compatible merely because the brand name matches. Use the laptop maker’s validated package or the component vendor’s compatibility page.
Windows Update offers many optional drivers
Read each entry instead of selecting the entire list. Install one relevant package at a time, restart if requested, and test the affected device. If everything already works, leaving an optional driver uninstalled is a reasonable choice.
The laptop is unstable after a driver change
Use Device Manager to open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when Windows offers it. Otherwise reinstall the previous package from the official support page. Disconnect from unnecessary driver-update tools and document the version that caused the problem before trying another release.
The BIOS update appears risky or unnecessary
Do not proceed solely because a newer date is displayed. Re-read the release notes for your exact model and look for a stated fix or prerequisite. If none applies, leave the current BIOS in place and revisit firmware maintenance when the manufacturer publishes a reason to update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to judge conflicting driver advice
When a forum, video, or installer recommends a different sequence, compare five details before following it:
| Question | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|
| Is the exact laptop model and hardware revision the same? | Two laptops with similar names can use different network, audio, firmware, or graphics parts. |
| Which Windows version and architecture are installed? | A package can support Windows 11 but not a particular Windows 10 build, or require 64-bit Windows. |
| Is the graphics arrangement integrated, discrete, or hybrid? | Hybrid systems may need both adapter packages and a switching utility. |
| Who published the package? | The laptop maker, Microsoft, and the component vendor can publish different versions with different integration choices. |
| Is the instruction a prerequisite or an optional newer release? | A prerequisite should be handled before the dependent operation; an optional release can be evaluated on its merits. |
The available official guidance does not establish one universal driver order for every gaming laptop. The safest sequence is therefore the one documented for your exact model, with Windows Update as the starting point and official component guidance used only when it matches your hardware and operating system.
Quick Recap
What you do not need to do automatically
- Clean-install Windows: The setup, update, and driver guidance does not make a blanket reinstall necessary on a new laptop. Consider reinstalling only for a specific, well-understood problem and after securing recovery media and backups.
- Flash the BIOS immediately: Update firmware for a documented model-specific reason, not because the laptop is new.
- Install every optional driver: Optional entries should be evaluated individually.
- Use a third-party driver updater: Official Microsoft and manufacturer channels provide the supported path.
- Expect a guaranteed frame-rate increase: Driver updates can fix compatibility or stability issues, but the available guidance does not establish a universal performance gain or benchmark result.
A practical first-day checklist
- Charge the laptop and record the exact model and product number.
- Complete Windows setup with internet access.
- Run Windows Update, restart, and check again.
- Review optional driver updates rather than installing them indiscriminately.
- Inspect Device Manager for missing or failed devices.
- Download unresolved drivers from the laptop maker’s official model page.
- Identify the actual graphics adapters and install matching, validated software.
- Check BIOS notes; update only for a documented requirement or fix.
- Set the intended refresh rate, power mode, graphics preferences, and security options.
- Test networking, audio, camera, input devices, displays, charging, and a sample game.
- Create a restore point and back up important files before changing advanced settings.
