Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safest first-day order for a new Windows gaming laptop is straightforward: finish Windows setup on a trusted network, install Windows Update items, restart, check the laptop maker’s support page for model-specific packages, inspect Device Manager, test the hardware, and only then consider graphics or BIOS updates that match the exact model. You do not need to install every optional driver or flash the BIOS simply because the laptop is new.
The exact screens and driver choices vary by Windows version, laptop model, processor, and graphics hardware. Use this guide as a Windows 11/10 sequence, then defer to the manufacturer’s instructions for anything model-specific.

1. Finish Windows setup on a trusted connection
Turn the laptop on with its charger connected and complete the initial Windows screens. The wording and required account steps differ between Windows 11, Windows 10, editions, regions, and manufacturers, so there is no single universal click path for this stage.
Use a network you trust
Connect to your home network or another trusted connection before downloading updates. Avoid performing the first update pass over an unknown public hotspot. If Wi-Fi is not working, use Ethernet or a compatible USB network adapter temporarily; do not download random driver packages from a search result.

Record the exact identity of the machine
Before searching for drivers, record the brand, complete model designation, serial number, Windows edition, and whether the machine has Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or hybrid graphics. A product family name is often shared by several configurations with different displays, wireless cards, storage controllers, and GPUs. The serial number or full model code is the reliable way to select a support page.
You can find the Windows edition and version in Settings > System > About on Windows 11, or Settings > System > About on Windows 10. Keep the model information in a note; you may need it if a driver has to be recovered later.
2. Make Windows Update the first driver stop
After setup reaches the desktop, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install the available quality, security, feature, and recommended driver updates, then restart when Windows asks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Recommended versus optional drivers
On Windows 11, recommended drivers can arrive automatically through Windows Update. Optional driver packages are separate: open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates to review them. Windows does not install those optional drivers automatically, so read the device name and version before selecting one.
An optional entry is not automatically a missing requirement. It may address a narrow issue, support a particular revision of hardware, or provide an alternative to the package already installed. If the laptop is working normally, install optional entries selectively rather than checking every box.
Restart even when Windows does not insist
Microsoft’s support guidance recommends restarting after updates, including when the screen does not explicitly request it. A restart completes driver replacement, firmware hand-offs, and services that cannot be reloaded while Windows is running.
Run more than one update pass
Return to Settings > Windows Update after the first restart and select Check for updates again. A large update can reveal another update that was not offered in the first scan. Continue until the page reports that the system is up to date, restarting whenever required.
Know the Windows 10 date boundary
Microsoft’s driver guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A new laptop still running Windows 10 may receive model-specific packages from its manufacturer, yet the operating system no longer has normal Microsoft support after that date. Treat an upgrade path to a supported Windows release as a separate decision based on the laptop’s compatibility and your software needs.
3. Verify what Windows actually installed
Use Settings > Windows Update > Update history to see whether updates completed or failed. A failed item can explain why a component remains unidentified; it is more useful than repeatedly installing unrelated packages.
Check Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the major categories and look for a yellow warning icon, an entry named Unknown device, or a device that is disabled.

This is a practical health check, not a standardized Microsoft “new laptop checklist.” If a needed device is missing, use Windows Update first. If Windows still cannot identify it, obtain the driver from the device manufacturer or the laptop maker’s official support page. Microsoft specifically cautions against unofficial driver-download sites.

4. Use the laptop maker’s official support route
Once Windows is current, open the manufacturer’s support site and search with the exact model or serial number. The support page can expose packages that Windows Update does not, including chipset, storage, hotkey, power-management, audio, wireless, graphics, and firmware updates.
Manufacturer utilities are model-dependent
Some makers provide a supported update utility. ASUS, for example, documents MyASUS > System Update for devices that support that feature and directs users to the ASUS support site when it is unavailable. That is a model-dependent route, not proof that every item shown by a utility must be installed.
Read the package description and release notes. A driver listed for a different submodel, operating system, or region can be wrong even when the product family name looks similar. If the support page offers several versions, prefer the package identified for your exact Windows edition and hardware revision.
What to install from the support page
Prioritize a package when it resolves a Device Manager warning, restores a function that failed the hardware check, or is explicitly required by the maker for a known compatibility issue. Avoid changing a working component merely to make every version number match the newest entry on the page.
Save downloaded installers in a clearly named folder, such as C:DriversLaptop-model2026-10, before running them. Keeping the original installer gives you a recovery option if a later update causes a problem.
5. Test the basic functions before chasing performance
Perform the following checks while the laptop is still in its original software state. If something fails now, you can identify the cause without confusing it with a later graphics or firmware change.
Connectivity and power
- Join your normal Wi-Fi network, disconnect, and reconnect.
- Connect the charger and confirm that Windows reports charging.
- Unplug the charger briefly and verify that the laptop switches to battery power.
- Test every included USB port with a known-working device if you have one.
Display and graphics switching
- Set the panel to its advertised resolution in Settings > System > Display.
- If the panel supports a higher refresh rate, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and confirm that the expected rate is available.
- On a hybrid-graphics laptop, confirm that both display adapters appear in Device Manager.
Audio and input
- Play a system sound through the speakers and test the headphone jack.
- Open the microphone settings and make a short recording.
- Test every keyboard key, the touchpad, and any hardware controls for volume, brightness, or performance modes.
These checks are intentionally simple. They establish whether the machine works before optional changes, rather than claiming that Microsoft prescribes this exact list.
6. Decide between OEM and generic graphics drivers
Gaming laptops commonly combine integrated graphics with a discrete GPU. The correct graphics package depends on the exact laptop, GPU, Windows build, and the way the manufacturer configured power and display switching.

What MSI’s notebook guidance says
MSI explains that Windows Update can replace a generic Intel or AMD reference graphics package with MSI’s OEM package. MSI describes its OEM graphics drivers as validated for its notebook hardware. It also notes that reference drivers may arrive more frequently with newer game features, but are not guaranteed for every notebook model. That guidance applies to MSI notebooks; it is not a universal rule for every gaming laptop.

| Consideration | Laptop-maker OEM package | Intel/AMD reference package |
|---|---|---|
| Model validation and compatibility | Validated by the laptop maker for its notebook hardware, according to MSI’s notebook guidance. | Designed as a reference release; compatibility with every notebook configuration is not guaranteed, according to MSI. |
| Release cadence and game features | May arrive less often than a reference release. | May provide more frequent graphics and game-related updates. |
| Best first choice | Prefer when the laptop maker specifies it, when hybrid graphics or hotkeys are sensitive, or when a reference package causes a regression. | Consider only when it supports the exact GPU and Windows version and you have a reason to need its newer fix or feature. |
| Recovery if something breaks | Keep the previous OEM installer and use Windows’ driver rollback path if available. | Keep the previous working package; a newer reference release can be removed or rolled back if it introduces a fault. |
Do not stack graphics installers blindly
Do not install an OEM package, a reference package, and a second vendor utility in succession without testing between changes. Change one graphics component at a time, restart, and verify brightness controls, external displays, sleep/wake, game launch, and the integrated/discrete GPU entries.
AMD’s installation documentation was updated on February 9, 2026, and uses Adrenalin 26.1.1 examples. Its screens, requirements, and available options can change, so follow the current installer’s choices for the exact GPU rather than treating that example version as a permanent requirement.
7. Treat a BIOS or firmware update as a model-specific choice
A BIOS update can address a documented compatibility, stability, security, or hardware-support issue, but being new does not by itself establish that the laptop needs one on day one. Check the exact model page and read the maker’s instructions before deciding.

- The release notes identify a problem you actually have or a feature you require.
- The manufacturer marks the update as important for your model and Windows configuration.
- Technical support directs you to that specific version.
When to defer it
- The laptop is stable and the release notes do not address your situation.
- You cannot keep the charger connected or the environment is at risk of a power interruption.
- The download is for a neighboring model or a different board revision.
Follow the manufacturer’s exact procedure, including file naming, utility choice, battery and AC requirements, and restart behavior. Do not interrupt a firmware flash. ASUS’s guidance explains how to check and install updates on applicable devices, but it does not state that every new notebook should receive a BIOS update during initial setup.
8. Recover safely when a driver causes trouble
If a new problem appears immediately after a driver update, stop installing additional packages. Note the device, package version, and time of the change, then use Windows’ built-in recovery path.
Roll back in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when the button is available.
- Choose a reason, confirm, and restart Windows.
Microsoft documents reinstalling the previous driver as a common response when an issue begins after Windows Update. The rollback button may be unavailable if Windows has no earlier package retained. In that case, use the saved installer for the previous working OEM or manufacturer package, matching the exact model and operating system.
Symptoms that warrant a rollback before further experimentation
- A previously working display becomes black, flickers, or loses its normal resolution.
- Wi-Fi, audio, keyboard hotkeys, or touchpad support disappears immediately after the update.
- The laptop crashes or restarts when a game starts.
- Sleep, wake, brightness control, or external-monitor detection stops working.
After recovery, record the problematic version and check the manufacturer’s release notes or support channel before trying a different package.
9. Keep the first-day process reversible
Make one change, restart if requested, and test the function that change could affect. This simple rhythm makes it possible to identify whether Windows Update, an OEM package, a graphics installer, or firmware caused a regression. Installing several packages at once can leave you unsure which one to remove.
Keep a short log containing the date, package name, version, and result. Save the exact model page URL and downloaded installers in a local folder. If the laptop later loses Wi-Fi or display output, that record is more useful than trying to remember which utility ran first.
Do not treat accessories as hidden setup requirements. The update sequence does not establish that a cooling pad, gaming mouse, USB drive, or other purchase is necessary to complete Windows and driver setup. Add peripherals only for a specific use case, and test them after the built-in hardware works.

10. A practical first-day stopping point
You can consider the initial setup complete when Windows Update has no required pending work, the laptop has been restarted, Device Manager has no unexplained warning for hardware you need, and Wi-Fi, charging, display, audio, keyboard, touchpad, and the intended graphics adapters work. At that point, install a graphics package or BIOS update only when the exact model’s documentation gives you a reason to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which drivers should I install on my gaming laptop?
Start with Windows Update, including recommended drivers, then use the laptop maker’s official support page for packages tied to your exact model. Install optional entries selectively and address any Device Manager warning or failed hardware function. Do not use unofficial driver sites or install every package simply because it is listed.
What is the correct order for Windows Updates, manufacturer BIOS and drivers, and NVIDIA or Intel graphics updates?
Finish Windows setup, run Windows Update and restart, check Device Manager, then review the manufacturer’s model-specific support page. Test the laptop before changing graphics packages. Consider a reference graphics driver or BIOS update only when the exact model supports it and the release notes give you a reason.
Should I install every optional driver shown in Windows 11?
No. Optional drivers are not installed automatically and are not automatically missing requirements. Read the device name and version, and select one when it fixes a problem, supports your hardware revision, or is recommended for a known issue.
Do I need to update the BIOS immediately on a new gaming laptop?
Not solely because the laptop is new. Check the exact model’s official page and update when the release notes address a problem or required feature, the maker marks it important, or support directs you to that version. Keep AC power connected and follow the maker’s procedure exactly.
Should I use the laptop maker’s graphics driver or a generic Intel or AMD package?
Use the package specified for your model first, particularly when hybrid graphics, hotkeys, brightness, or external displays are sensitive. MSI says its OEM notebook packages are validated for its hardware, while reference releases may arrive more often but are not guaranteed for every notebook. That comparison is specific to MSI guidance, not a universal rule.
What should I do if a driver update breaks something?
Stop adding updates, note the changed version, and open Device Manager. In the device’s Properties, use the Driver tab and Roll Back Driver when available, then restart. If no rollback is retained, reinstall the previous working package from the official manufacturer installer you saved.
The Bottom Line
Set up a new gaming laptop in layers: trusted connection, Windows Update, restart, exact-model support page, Device Manager check, and basic hardware test. Graphics and BIOS updates are model-specific choices, not automatic first-day chores.
