Set up a new Windows 11 gaming PC in this order: finish Windows setup and connect to the internet, install Windows updates and restart, check for missing drivers, review security, configure the display, then install games and tune them individually. Windows Update is the safest starting point for drivers; use official manufacturer support pages for model-specific drivers or anything still missing.

1. Finish Windows setup and get online

Complete the Windows first-run prompts, connect to the internet, and reach the desktop. Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft Account for first-use device setup; internet access is also needed for updates and some features. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements explains the setup requirements.

2. Install Windows updates before adding drivers manually

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install the available updates.
  3. Restart when prompted, then return to Windows Update and check again until no additional updates are offered.

Windows 11 installs recommended drivers automatically through Windows Update. Optional driver updates are separate and are not installed automatically; to review them, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Install an optional driver when it addresses a missing device or a specific issue, rather than treating every optional item as a required gaming upgrade. Microsoft advises restarting after updates finish. Microsoft’s driver-update instructions describe the distinction.

Microsoft announced the Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2, on September 29, 2026. Eligible devices running 24H2 or 25H2 receive it through a controlled rollout, and safeguards can delay availability on some devices. Check Windows Update rather than assuming a new PC will be offered 26H2 immediately. Microsoft’s announcement outlines the rollout.

3. Check which drivers your PC still needs

After Windows Update and its restarts, open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning symbol or listed as unknown. If Windows has not supplied a driver, or a component needs a newer version to address a specific problem, identify the exact PC, motherboard, or component model and use its manufacturer’s official support page.

For a prebuilt PC, start with the PC maker’s support page; for a custom build, consult the relevant motherboard or component maker. Follow that model’s instructions for items such as chipset, network, audio, and firmware updates. Menus and driver packages vary, so do not assume that another system’s procedure applies to yours. Avoid third-party driver utilities when Windows Update and official support pages are available.

Microsoft’s driver policy says new drivers must be submitted and signed through the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP). Microsoft also says an April 2026 security update changed default trust for drivers signed through the expired cross-signed program. If an older driver will not install, check Windows Update and the hardware or software vendor’s official support page instead of bypassing Windows security controls. Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy gives the current guidance.

Install AMD graphics software if you have an AMD GPU

AMD provides automatic driver detection or manual product selection on its official download page. Finish pending Windows updates first: an active Windows Update can prevent the AMD installer from proceeding. AMD’s driver download page provides both routes.

The installer offers three software choices. These determine which AMD Software features are installed, not different levels of gaming performance:

Install choice What it includes Choose it when
Default All AMD Software features and controls. You want the full software interface and feature set.
Minimal Basic controls; omits advanced functions such as performance tweaking and recording or capture. You want basic controls without those advanced functions.
Driver Only No AMD Software user interface. You want the driver without the AMD Software interface.

AMD’s installation options guide describes these choices. For NVIDIA, Intel, or other hardware, use the support or download page for the exact GPU or PC model; installation details vary.

4. Review Windows security status

Windows 11 requires a PC capable of Secure Boot and TPM 2.0. Check the current status in Windows Security rather than changing firmware options blindly. Microsoft recommends enabling Secure Boot for better security. If a setting is unavailable, the PC’s firmware, hardware, or configuration may differ; check the system maker’s instructions before changing UEFI/BIOS settings. Windows 11’s requirements explain the platform requirements, and Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance explains how to check it.

Memory integrity and virtualization

Memory integrity is a Windows Security feature that requires hardware virtualization enabled in UEFI/BIOS. If Windows reports an incompatible driver, check with that hardware or software vendor for a compatible update. Do not disable a security feature or change firmware settings just to follow a generic gaming checklist. Microsoft’s memory integrity guidance covers the requirement and driver compatibility.

5. Set up the monitor and Windows display options

  1. Open Settings > System > Display and select the correct display if more than one is connected.
  2. Set Display resolution to the display’s supported resolution, usually the option marked recommended.
  3. Open Advanced display and choose a refresh rate supported by both the monitor and PC.
  4. Enable HDR only if the display and PC support it. Microsoft’s HDR guidance recommends current graphics drivers.

For compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games played windowed or borderless, Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations can enable modern presentation features, including Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. To check the option, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings and review Optimizations for windowed games. Restart a game after changing the setting. Availability depends on the game, display, and hardware. Microsoft’s windowed-game instructions explain the feature; its HDR guide covers HDR setup.

6. Install games, then tune them one at a time

Install the launchers and games you use, then configure graphics, display mode, resolution, and input in each game. There is no universal best-performance checklist: settings and results depend on the PC, game, display, and the balance you want between visual quality and responsiveness. Change one setting at a time and compare the result in the same game scene before keeping it.

  • If a game offers a benchmark or repeatable test scene, use it to compare settings on your own system.
  • If performance or stability worsens after a change, restore that setting to its previous value.
  • Keep firmware changes, driver updates, and optional Windows settings tied to a specific need; they are not prerequisites for every gaming PC.
