How to Set Up a New Gaming PC: First Boot, Windows Updates, and Driver Installation

For a new gaming desktop, the reliable order is: confirm the display and power connections, reach firmware or the Windows installer, install Windows only if the computer does not already have it, finish setup and connect to the internet, run Windows Update, install drivers for the exact hardware in the machine, restart when requested, and verify display, network, audio, and Device Manager. A prebuilt that arrived with Windows follows a different path from a custom build that has an empty drive.

Start with a hardware and setup check

Do not begin by downloading every utility listed on a motherboard website. First establish that the computer can complete its basic power-on self-test (POST) and that you know which Windows path applies.

Check the connections that affect first boot

  • If a discrete graphics card is installed, connect the monitor to a video output on that graphics card. A motherboard video port may show nothing when the processor does not provide integrated graphics, or when firmware is configured to use the discrete card.
  • Seat the monitor cable at both ends and select the matching input on the monitor. Check the main power cable, the power-supply switch, and any required graphics-card power plugs.
  • Connect a keyboard. You may need it to enter firmware setup or select a boot device.
  • Leave nonessential USB devices disconnected until Windows is working. A keyboard, mouse, network cable, and the Windows installer are enough for the initial pass.

Know whether this is a prebuilt or a clean-install job

Situation What you should expect Where drivers normally come from
Prebuilt PC sold with Windows It should start an existing Windows setup. Do not erase the drive or reinstall Windows merely because the PC is new. The computer maker’s support page for the exact model, supplemented by Windows Update.
Custom build with no operating system You should reach firmware and then boot Windows installation media from a USB flash drive. The motherboard maker for board-specific packages and the graphics-card maker for the GPU driver.

If the seller advertised Windows but the machine opens a firmware screen instead, check the boot drive and the seller’s documentation before performing a clean installation. A clean install can remove an existing recovery image and data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Complete the first boot and reach the right screen

  1. Press the power button and watch for a logo, a firmware prompt, or the Windows installer. A successful POST does not require Windows to be installed; reaching firmware setup is enough to confirm that the core system is responding.
  2. To enter firmware setup or a boot menu, press the key shown on screen as the computer starts. Delete is common in illustrated build instructions, but the correct key varies by motherboard, so use the motherboard manual when the prompt is unclear.
  3. If you are installing Windows on a custom build, choose the USB installation media as the boot target. In firmware boot order, the USB device is normally placed before the target drive for this installation; after installation, the target drive should be the normal boot device.
  4. If a prebuilt immediately opens Windows, continue with its setup instead of changing boot order. Change firmware settings only when you have a specific reason, such as selecting installation media or diagnosing a drive that is not detected.

If the screen stays blank

Turn the system off and recheck the monitor input, the cable at the graphics-card output, and the graphics-card power connectors. Try another output on the card or another known-good cable if available. If the machine never shows a logo or firmware prompt, consult the motherboard’s POST indicators and manual before changing software; Windows drivers cannot fix a system that has not reached firmware.

Install Windows only when the drive is empty

DIY clean installation

Use a USB flash drive containing official Windows installation media. This route is for a custom build that has no operating system, or for an intentional reinstall after you have backed up anything you need.

  1. Insert the Windows installation USB before powering on, then open the boot menu or set the USB device first in firmware boot order.
  2. Start the installer and select the intended system drive. Read the drive names and sizes carefully; deleting or formatting partitions removes their data.
  3. Allow the installer to copy Windows and restart. Remove the USB, or choose the internal drive when the system asks which device to boot, so the computer does not begin the installer again.
  4. Continue through the Windows first-run screens. Connect to the internet when possible so setup can obtain current features, security updates, and baseline drivers.

The exact screens can differ by Windows edition and release. The important distinction is that installation media is a requirement for a system without an operating system, not a ritual every new owner must perform.

Prebuilt PC with Windows already installed

Let the existing Windows installation complete its first-run questions, including account, privacy, time zone, and network choices. A manufacturer recovery partition and bundled drivers may be useful later, so do not delete them while trying to make the machine feel more up to date. Move directly to connectivity and Windows Update unless you have a deliberate reason to reinstall.

Finish Windows setup and get online

When Ethernet or Wi-Fi works

Use a wired connection if it is convenient; otherwise select the correct Wi-Fi network during setup and enter its password. Internet access makes the next steps easier because Windows can download security updates and a baseline set of drivers. A connection also lets you reach the support page for the exact PC or component instead of guessing from a product family name.

When Wi-Fi is missing during setup

A new custom build may have no wireless driver yet, and some desktop boards do not include Wi-Fi hardware at all. Microsoft documents an offline recovery path:

  1. On another internet-connected device, identify the exact wireless adapter or PC model and download its Windows network driver from the computer or component maker’s official support page.
  2. Copy the downloaded installer to a USB flash drive.
  3. Connect that drive to the new PC, run the network-driver installer, and restart if it requests one.
  4. Return to Windows setup or the desktop and connect to Wi-Fi.

A wired Ethernet connection is an alternative. If the computer has no Ethernet port, a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a temporary path; it is not required for a desktop that already has a working port or Wi-Fi.

Run Windows Update before chasing individual packages

Once you can reach the desktop, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install what Windows offers, restart when asked, and check the same page again after the restart. A second pass is normal because servicing updates can make additional updates appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Update supplies a useful baseline, but it is not proof that every model-specific package is present. It may use a generic display, audio, network, or chipset driver while the exact package remains available from the PC or component maker. Do not interpret an empty Windows Update queue as a reason to install unrelated utilities.

Identify the exact hardware before downloading drivers

Driver selection is a model-matching task. Record the full PC model for a prebuilt, or the motherboard model, processor platform, graphics-card model, and optional network hardware for a custom build. Windows tools can help confirm what is installed:

Hardware Where to check Why the exact identity matters
Motherboard and system Settings > System > About, the system label, motherboard documentation, or System Information Board revisions and prebuilt variants can use different network, audio, or chipset packages.
Graphics card Device Manager > Display adapters The discrete GPU needs its own graphics package; installing for a GPU that is not present adds no value.
Network adapter Device Manager > Network adapters Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth components can require different drivers.
Audio device Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers Onboard audio codecs and add-in sound hardware are not interchangeable.
Processor platform and chipset System Information, the processor name, and the motherboard support page Chipset packages are tied to a platform and board support list, not to the fact that the PC is used for games.

For a branded prebuilt, start with the maker’s support page and enter the complete model or serial selection. For a custom system, use the motherboard maker’s page for board-specific network, audio, and chipset items, and the graphics-card maker’s page for the GPU. Download only packages that correspond to your Windows version and the hardware you actually own.

Install the drivers your hardware actually needs

Driver category Install it when Preferred source
Chipset or platform The motherboard or platform support page lists a package for your board and processor platform, or Device Manager shows an unresolved platform device. For a custom build, the motherboard maker or the platform vendor’s official support page; for a prebuilt, the PC maker’s package first.
Discrete graphics A graphics card is installed, especially when Windows is using a basic display driver or advanced resolution and refresh options are missing. The graphics-card maker’s official download page, matched to the exact GPU and Windows version.
Ethernet or Wi-Fi The adapter is missing, has a warning icon, or cannot connect. The PC maker for a prebuilt, or the motherboard/network-adapter maker for a custom build.
Audio Sound outputs are missing, the audio device has a warning icon, or the board’s support page specifies a model-specific package. The PC or motherboard maker’s official support page.
Bluetooth and other devices The hardware is present and Windows has not supplied a working driver. The exact PC, motherboard, or device maker’s support page.

A sensible installation order

  1. Finish Windows Update and restart if requested.
  2. Install the exact chipset or platform package listed for the system when one is needed.
  3. Install a missing network driver first if the PC is still offline; otherwise install remaining board-specific network and audio packages that match the hardware.
  4. Install the discrete graphics driver from the graphics-card maker. This is the package that enables the card’s full display features; it is not interchangeable with a motherboard driver.
  5. Restart whenever an installer requests it, then return to Windows Update and Device Manager for a final check.

This order is practical rather than universal. Some installers bundle components or request a restart before the next package, so follow the prompts from the package you are running. Never install a driver solely because its name sounds useful: a package for hardware that is not installed can add clutter and occasionally create conflicts.

Choosing AMD driver packages

For compatible Radeon graphics and Ryzen chipsets, AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool can check the PC for supported hardware and the Windows version, then download matching drivers. AMD labels packages as Recommended when they offer its best stability and Microsoft certification, and as Optional when they are newer and include newer features or bug fixes. Those labels describe AMD’s own release choices; they are not a promise that Optional is better for every game or that Recommended fixes every problem. If you use another vendor’s hardware, use that vendor’s exact-product support page rather than applying AMD’s tool by analogy.

Restart and verify the finished installation

After the requested restarts, check the functions that matter before adding tuning software or games.

  • Display: Open Settings > System > Display, confirm the expected monitor is detected, and open Advanced display to see the refresh-rate choices. Missing high-resolution or refresh options usually indicate a cable, input, or graphics-driver issue rather than a need for motherboard utilities.
  • Network: Open Settings > Network & internet. Confirm the intended Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter is listed and that a web page loads without repeated disconnects.
  • Audio: Open Settings > System > Sound, select the intended output, and verify that the volume meter responds. Monitors connected over HDMI or DisplayPort can appear as audio outputs even when you intend to use speakers or headphones.
  • Device Manager: Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category containing an unknown device. A yellow warning icon means Windows does not have a fully working driver for that device; record its exact name before searching the official support page.
  • Stability: Let the system sit at the desktop for a few minutes, complete any pending restart, and check Windows Update once more. Do not diagnose a game crash as a driver problem until the desktop devices are recognized normally.

Check Windows activation and edition

Open Settings > System > Activation. A first-time device, a changed motherboard, or a Windows edition that does not match the license can require a valid product key or digital license. Microsoft says a digital license can be purchased through the Store after installation when necessary. Do not assume a key is included simply because the computer is new, and do not install a different edition expecting the existing license to activate it.

Common first-setup problems and the shortest safe fix

The PC powers on but never shows firmware or Windows

Recheck that the monitor is connected to the discrete graphics card when one is installed, select the monitor’s correct input, and reseat power and display cables. If there is still no logo or firmware prompt, use the motherboard’s documented POST indicators and manual. Driver installation cannot begin until the system reaches firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Windows installer keeps starting again

Remove the USB installation media after the first restart, or select the internal target drive in the boot menu. If the internal drive is absent from the installer and firmware, stop and investigate drive cabling or firmware detection instead of repeatedly reinstalling.

There is no internet after Windows setup

Use the offline network-driver transfer procedure, or connect Ethernet. Confirm that the downloaded package matches the exact adapter and Windows version; a driver for a similar board may install without making the adapter work.

Device Manager shows an unknown device

Open its Properties and note the device name or hardware identifier, then search the exact PC or motherboard support page. Install only the matching package and restart. If the device is an unused port or controller that the board exposes but you do not need, leaving it disabled is preferable to installing an unrelated driver.

Windows is activated with the wrong edition or reports that it is not activated

Verify the edition under Settings > System > Activation. A license for one edition does not automatically activate another. Correct the edition or provide a valid key or digital license before treating activation as a driver fault.

What should wait until the PC is proven stable

BIOS flashing, overclocking, fan-control profiles, RGB suites, motherboard dashboards, and automated driver-updater programs are optional. A BIOS update can be useful for a documented compatibility or stability issue, but it is not a required first-boot step. Likewise, vendor utilities should be added only when you have a specific feature to configure. The dependable baseline is a successful boot, a working Windows installation, current Windows Update, exact-hardware drivers from official sources, requested restarts, and normal device verification.
