PlayStation Portal is a remote player for PS5, not a standalone handheld console. To use it, you need a PS5, a PlayStation account, broadband Wi‐Fi, and a compatible game installed on that PS5. Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum for Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. A PlayStation Plus subscription is not required for ordinary Remote Play.
Complete the first setup on your home Wi‐Fi, update the Portal, enable Remote Play on the PS5, and make the first connection locally before trying to play from another room or away from home.

- A PlayStation Portal.
- A PlayStation 5 or PS5 Digital Edition. Portal Remote Play does not work with a PS4.
- A PlayStation account signed in on both devices.
- An internet-connected PS5 and broadband Wi‐Fi for the Portal.
- A compatible game installed on the PS5.
- Current PS5 and Portal system software.
You do not need PlayStation Plus for standard Remote Play from your own PS5, a separate controller, or the PS Remote Play mobile app. PlayStation Plus Premium is relevant to the separate Cloud Streaming feature, not basic Portal setup. See Sony’s Portal product information and compatibility guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Before you start
- Have the PS5 available for its initial settings.
- Make sure you know the PlayStation account credentials.
- Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if practical.
- Confirm the PS5 is online and updated.
- Keep the included USB cable nearby for charging.
- Use your home Wi‐Fi for first setup. Do not begin with hotel, café, airport, or other captive-portal Wi‐Fi.
Sony requires initial Portal setup to be completed before supported public Wi‐Fi networks can be used. Public-network compatibility is selective rather than universal.
1. Charge and turn on the Portal
- Connect the Portal to power with the included USB cable.
- Press and hold the power button.
- Choose the language and regional options if prompted.
The Portal can be used while charging. A first-time device may need to install more than one update before it reaches the current software version.
2. Connect the Portal to Wi‐Fi and update it
- Select your home Wi‐Fi network from the displayed list.
- Enter the Wi‐Fi password.
- Install any available Portal system-software updates.
- Allow the Portal to restart when requested.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
Depending on the software installed, Sony may offer a QR-code sign-in or account-creation flow using a phone or tablet. Complete the initial setup rather than skipping it, especially if you plan to use the Portal on public Wi‐Fi later.
After setup, the update path is generally Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update. To open the Quick Menu, swipe from the upper-right edge toward the left, press the PS button on supported screens, or tap the Quick Menu icon. Labels may differ after future updates; look under the System section if the wording changes. Check Sony’s Portal system-software page for the current release. Sony’s US page listed version 7.0.2 on August 18, 2026, but that version should not be treated as permanent.
3. Prepare the PS5 for Remote Play
On the PS5, sign in with the same account used on the Portal and install any available system update.
- Open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
For the Portal to wake the PS5 from Rest Mode, also open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable:
- Stay Connected to the Internet
- Enable Turning on PS5 from Network
The PS5 can be fully powered on or in Rest Mode. These two Rest Mode options are needed for remote wake-up; without them, the Portal may be unable to turn on a sleeping PS5.

4. Connect the Portal to the PS5
- Return to the Portal home screen.
- Select the Portal/PS5 icon, or press the cross button.
- Allow the Portal to search for the PS5 previously associated with your account.
- When connected, the PS5 home screen appears on the Portal.
- Start a compatible game installed on the PS5.
Make the first connection near the PS5 while both devices use the same home network. Sony recommends confirming that local Remote Play works before testing the Portal from outside the home.
5. Test the setup
A connection beside the router does not guarantee good performance in every room or on another network. Check all of the following:
- Launch a game installed on the PS5.
- Test the analog sticks, buttons, triggers, and touchpad controls.
- Confirm game audio.
- Open the Quick Menu and check Troubleshoot > Show Network Status.
- Try playing from another room.
- Put the PS5 in Rest Mode and confirm that the Portal can wake it.
- If you intend to travel, test the Portal on a second network before leaving home.
Portal’s touchpad areas appear on screen when the display is tapped. Double-tapping a touchpad area uses it as a button. Custom button assignments configured on the PS5 do not carry over to Portal Remote Play; the default layout is used.
Network requirements and practical improvements
Sony lists these Remote Play figures:
| Connection measure | Sony guidance |
|---|---|
| Upload speed | 5 Mbps minimum |
| Download speed | 5 Mbps minimum |
| Better experience | At least 15 Mbps |
These are not guarantees. Latency, packet loss, Wi‐Fi interference, router quality, congestion, and the distance between the Portal and access point can matter more than a speed-test result.

- Keep the Portal reasonably close to the router during setup.
- Reduce walls and other obstacles between the Portal and access point.
- Pause large downloads, uploads, and streaming on other devices.
- Test the actual Portal connection instead of judging performance only by internet speed.
Portal adjusts video quality automatically to preserve playability. Current software provides maximum-resolution choices including 1080p Standard and 1080p High Quality, but actual image quality can fall when network conditions worsen.
Useful Portal settings and audio options
The Quick Menu provides access to network, display, controller, PS Link, troubleshooting, and PS5 controls. It also includes options such as display brightness, controller intensity, and maximum resolution. Adjust these after the basic connection works rather than changing several settings while diagnosing a failure.
For audio, use wired headphones or earbuds with a 3.5 mm plug, or a compatible PlayStation Link device such as PULSE Explore earbuds or the PULSE Elite headset. Do not assume that ordinary Bluetooth headphones are universally supported; consult Sony’s audio compatibility information.

Using Portal away from home
Portal can work away from home wherever both the Portal and PS5 have suitable broadband connectivity. It is not literally guaranteed to work on every network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor hotel, school, airport, café, or other public Wi‐Fi:
- Complete the full initial setup at home first.
- Update the Portal before travelling.
- Connect to the public network through Quick Menu > Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Have a phone or tablet available if the network requires additional validation.
Sony says Portal software version 3.0.1 or later supports select networks requiring additional validation, but some captive-portal networks remain incompatible because of network or regional restrictions. A successful home connection does not prove that a hotel or café network will work.

Portal cannot connect to Wi‐Fi
- Check whether another device can use the same network.
- Re-enter the Wi‐Fi password carefully.
- Open Quick Menu > Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection and try again.
- Move closer to the access point.
- Restart the router.
- Check PlayStation service status if authentication or service access appears affected.
- Contact the network administrator or ISP if the network itself is failing.
For a specific Wi‐Fi error, consult Sony’s PS Portal Wi‐Fi troubleshooting page.
Portal cannot find the PS5
- Confirm that both devices use the same PlayStation account.
- Check that the PS5 is online.
- Verify Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play.
- If the PS5 is in Rest Mode, enable both network wake-up options.
- Update the Portal and PS5.
- Connect both devices to the same home network.
- Restart both devices.
- Try a wired PS5 connection and test near the router.
- If the Portal has not been used for a long time, sign in locally and pair it again before trying remote access.
The PS5 will not wake from Rest Mode
On the PS5, revisit Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network must be enabled. Also confirm that the PS5 is actually in Rest Mode rather than fully powered off.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Gameplay is blurry or laggy
- Open Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status.
- Pause competing downloads and uploads.
- Use Ethernet for the PS5.
- Move the Portal closer to the router.
- Try the lower maximum-resolution setting.
- Test another Wi‐Fi network to identify whether the problem is local to one connection.
Input delay and image softness can have different causes. Neither can be eliminated completely because Portal is streaming the PS5 rather than running the game locally.
The Portal freezes or will not respond
To restart normally, hold the power button and select Restart. If it does not respond, hold the power button until it turns off, wait 30 seconds, then hold the power button again to start it.

Use a factory reset only as a last resort. Open Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options and select Reset. This signs you out and erases Portal data and settings; it is not the same as restarting.
Audio will not connect
Check whether the device is a supported PlayStation Link product or a wired 3.5 mm headset. Ordinary Bluetooth audio should not be assumed to work with Portal.
A game will not start or controls do not work
Portal supports compatible PS5 games, but some titles require PlayStation VR, PS VR2, or other peripherals that Portal cannot provide. Games that must be streamed on PS5 through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership are also excluded from ordinary Remote Play. Compatibility can vary by title; see Sony’s Portal FAQ.
Remote Play versus Cloud Streaming
Remote Play streams a compatible game installed on your own PS5. It requires the PS5, but not PlayStation Plus.
Cloud Streaming is a separate Portal feature. It requires an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership, a supported country or region, broadband internet, and an adult account; child accounts are not supported. Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a cloud session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Catalog and availability depend on the account, region, subscription, and supported games. See Sony’s Cloud Streaming support page.
Is Portal the right option?
Portal is best suited to PS5 owners who want integrated controls, a dedicated screen, and the ability to play without occupying the television. It is less suitable if you do not own a PS5, mainly own PS4 games, have unreliable Wi‐Fi, or expect native local handheld gaming.
A phone, tablet, or computer running Sony’s PS Remote Play app can be a lower-cost alternative if you already own a suitable device and controller, but it requires more setup and does not provide Portal’s integrated controls.
