Private lobby or actual 1v1 rules?
A private match controls who can enter a game; a 1v1 ruleset controls how the contest is played. Those are different things. A lobby may be private while still using a standard team format, map, or mode. Conversely, a custom game may let you change rules without being private by default.

The steps below distinguish what official guidance establishes from what you still need to verify in the game. Where the available guidance does not state a player minimum, menu path, or specific rule control, it is marked as unknown rather than filled in from guesswork.

Fortnite: create a Battle Royale custom match
Epic’s Creator Programs support instructions describe a custom-key route for Battle Royale. This is a private-match feature, not a dedicated 1v1 ruleset. The host must be entitled to start private matches, so a normal account should not assume it can create one. Epic’s guidance gives a maximum of 100 players.
- Confirm the host can start private matches. If the account is not entitled, the documented host flow will not be available.
- Select Battle Royale. The support instructions apply to this mode; they do not establish that the same feature works in every Fortnite mode.
- Set a shared server region. The host and participants must use the same region for the custom match.
- Choose Custom Key and create a key. Use 4–16 characters and do not include special characters. Accept the key when it is ready.
- Share the key privately. Participants enter it in the same region. The key is case-sensitive, so communicate capitalization accurately.
- Have both players join before the host starts. Participants must enter the match before the host starts matchmaking.
- Check the rules and player arrangement. A custom match does not itself guarantee a 1v1. Confirm that the selected Battle Royale setup can place only the intended two competitors in the contest and does not leave other participants or teams affecting play.
If the key is rejected, first check spelling and capitalization, the selected region, and whether the host has accepted the key and started the correct mode. If one player arrives after matchmaking begins, have the host stop and repeat the setup so both can join before launch. Those checks address the documented access flow; they do not change the account-entitlement requirement.

EA’s FAQ describes the Private Match route and lobby controls. From the mode-selection menu, select the Private Match tab, then choose Create Match. Reveal the join code and share it with the intended participants. Players can ready up; the admin can move players between teams or let them select a team slot, and observers can spectate.
The key limitation for a 1v1 is the player minimum. EA says hosts can play multiple games as long as the minimum player count is met, but the FAQ passage available here does not state that count. Check the requirement shown in the current game before planning a duel; do not treat the existence of a private-match code as proof that two players are enough. If the minimum is higher than two, the match cannot proceed with only the dueling participants unless the game’s current rules provide another supported way to satisfy it.

Once the lobby is available, use the team controls to put the two duelists on opposing sides. If the purpose is a head-to-head match, make sure any additional players are assigned deliberately rather than left in positions that could affect the result. Observers can watch according to the FAQ, but keep them out of the competing teams. The exact player minimum, current menu labels beyond the documented route, and any additional rules needed for a particular 1v1 format should be verified in the live game.
Destiny 2: use a private Crucible match
Bungie’s guide confirms that private Crucible matches are available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The match leader controls settings under Game Options. A player must own the release that contains a particular Crucible map to access that map in private matches.
The available guide excerpt does not establish a complete menu walkthrough or a current minimum lobby size, so do not rely on a remembered sequence of buttons or assume the lobby accepts exactly two players. Have the leader open a private Crucible match using the current in-game interface, then inspect Game Options for the settings the game makes available. Choose a map only after checking that the players who need access own the release containing it.
Before starting, verify in the current lobby that both participants can enter and that the available team and match settings support the duel you have agreed on. If the map is unavailable to a player, select one they can access. If the game will not start with the current lobby, check its displayed player requirements rather than inferring a minimum from the existence of private matches.
Overwatch: use Custom Game access controls
Blizzard’s Game Browser announcement describes it as an extension of Custom Game mode. It says players can customize game modes, maps, abilities, movement, health, and damage, and restrict access with Friends Only or Invite Only. Those features make Custom Games relevant to a private duel, but the announcement is older and is not a current Overwatch 2 click-by-click guide.

Use the current Custom Game interface to create a session, choose an access setting appropriate for the two players, and inspect the available mode and gameplay controls. The announcement establishes broad categories of customization, not the exact current names, locations, or values of individual settings. Before launch, confirm that the two players are on opposing sides and that the chosen configuration does not introduce unwanted extra competitors.
