Use the separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server application (Steam app 294420), not the ordinary game client. Install it with SteamCMD, copy the shipped serverconfig.xml to your own file, launch the headless server with that file, open the configured ports on your firewall and router, then test with a non-admin account. A dependable PvE server also needs a password or whitelist policy, restricted administrator permissions, backups, automatic restarts and a planned update window.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The seven-day schedule below takes you from choosing a host to handing friends reliable join instructions. It applies to a Windows or Linux machine you control; managed hosting can remove much of the operating-system and networking work, but you still need to understand configuration, permissions and recovery.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat a dedicated PvE server does
A dedicated server is a standalone process. The world remains online when the person who created it is not playing, and players connect to the server rather than to a host player’s game session. The dedicated-server software is a separate Steam download, identified by app ID 294420; installing the retail game alone does not install it.
PvE is mostly an administration and community-policy choice. The server can use the game’s ordinary progression, enemy and blood-moon systems, but the social contract determines whether players can safely build, store loot and play cooperatively. A private password or whitelist, a written no-griefing rule and carefully limited administrator access matter as much as XML values.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting on day one
First estimate how many people will play at once, how large the world and save will become, which mods you may use and whether console crossplay is a requirement. Those answers determine whether an existing computer, a rented virtual machine or a managed game-server panel is appropriate.
| Consideration | Machine you control | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Administrative effort | You handle operating-system updates, firewall and NAT rules, restarts, backups and logs. | The provider normally supplies the operating system, panel, restart controls and basic monitoring; you still maintain game settings and content. |
| Control | Maximum control over custom configuration, mods, server branch and administrator access. | Control depends on the provider’s panel, permitted branches, file access and mod support. |
| Cost model | Uses existing hardware but adds electricity, bandwidth and maintenance time. | Recurring hosting fee; hardware and network operations are included in the service. |
| Reliability | Depends on your power, internet connection, reboot policy and monitoring. | Usually includes datacenter connectivity and automated restart options, but outages and provider limits still apply. |
| Connectivity | You configure public reachability, port forwarding and any cloud security group. | The provider usually exposes an address and port, although latency, region and crossplay support must be checked before purchase. |
CPU performance is important for this game, but there is no single universal hardware minimum established for every player count, world and mod set. Start conservatively, watch CPU, memory, disk and network use, and reduce simultaneous players or heavy mods if the process cannot keep up.

The seven-day implementation plan
Day 1: define the scope and hosting model
- Write down the expected peak player count and the region in which most players live.
- Choose a world size, seed or existing save strategy, and decide whether the server is private to friends or publicly listed.
- List the mods you might use. Server-side mods still require compatible files and versions on clients when the mod changes client content.
- Decide whether console crossplay is essential. Verify that the specific server build and host arrangement support it before committing.
- Choose a machine you can leave online or a managed host. For self-hosting, reserve a stable local address so port-forwarding rules do not break after a reboot.
Do not promise an uptime level you cannot maintain. Tell players the planned maintenance window and who they should contact when the world is unavailable.
Day 2: install the dedicated-server software
Install SteamCMD on the chosen Windows or Linux machine. Keep the server in its own directory rather than mixing it with the retail game’s files. A typical SteamCMD update command is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit
The command downloads or updates app 294420 and validates the installation. Run it again during a maintenance window when you intentionally update the server. The exact SteamCMD executable path differs by operating system, so put the command in a script once the first install works.
Run the process under a restricted service account where practical. The account needs read and write access to the server directory and save files, but it should not be an everyday administrator account. On Linux, a dedicated user and a systemd service are common; on Windows, use a dedicated local account and a scheduled task or service wrapper that can restart the process.
Before changing settings, start the server once and stop it cleanly. This confirms that required runtime components and directory permissions work and creates the folders and files you will later protect with backups.

Day 3: create a durable configuration
Never edit the shipped serverconfig.xml directly. Copy it to a custom filename, for example myserver.xml, and launch the server with that copy. Updates can replace the shipped file; a custom file preserves your choices and makes rollback easier.
- Copy
serverconfig.xmlin the dedicated-server directory tomyserver.xml. - Open
myserver.xmlin a text editor that preserves plain XML. - Change property values while keeping the XML structure, element names and quoting intact.
- Set the server name and description so friends can identify the correct listing.
- Set a strong password for a private group and choose the player-slot limit that matches your hardware and plan.
- Choose the world, seed or save location. If you are continuing an existing world, confirm the save path before allowing players to join.
- Review network and administration properties, then save the custom file.
Do not paste an old settings block blindly into a current file. Current V3-era builds can encode experience, loot, difficulty and blood-moon controls in SandboxCode rather than in the standalone XML properties shown in older guides. Inspect the configuration generated by the installed build and use the fields it actually provides. A settings reference oriented to V3.2.0 and an older V3.1 setup guide do not necessarily describe the same property layout; the V3.1 material has not been rechecked against V3.2.
Add -configfile=myserver.xml to the launch command and include -dedicated. A simple Windows batch example is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7DaysToDieServer.exe -configfile=myserver.xml -dedicated
Use the executable name and path installed by your build. On Linux, place the equivalent arguments in your service or launch script. Keep the command, custom XML and server directory together so another administrator can understand and restore the setup.
Day 4: make the PvE rules enforceable
Publish the rules in the server description, a welcome message or a separate document that every invited player can read. At minimum, state that the world is PvE, whether stealing or entering another player’s base is forbidden, how abandoned claims are handled and how players report problems. A password is suitable for a small private group; a whitelist is better when invitations must be controlled individually.
Store administrator permissions in serveradmin.xml. Grant the minimum level needed to trusted SteamIDs, and keep a record of who has console access. Do not give every regular player administrative rights simply because the server is private. Console commands can alter progression, inventory and the world, so treat them as recovery tools rather than ordinary conveniences.
Keep a separate note describing each permission level and the circumstances in which it may be used. If an admin changes a setting or repairs a corrupted area, record what changed and when. This creates accountability without requiring a complex moderation system.

Day 5: open the network and make the first connection
The server must be reachable through every boundary between it and the player: the operating-system firewall, the home router’s NAT rules or the cloud provider’s security group. A commonly cited default range is UDP/TCP 26900 through 26902, but panels and game versions can allocate ports differently. Treat the values in your installed configuration and host panel as authoritative rather than assuming the defaults.
| Layer | What to do | What failure looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Server configuration | Confirm the game port and any companion ports in myserver.xml or the hosting panel. |
The process starts, but clients are sent to the wrong port. |
| Operating-system firewall | Create inbound rules for the configured protocol and port range, limited to the server executable where practical. | Local tests may work while players outside the machine time out. |
| Router/NAT | Forward the same ports to the server’s stable local address. | The server appears online locally but is unreachable from the internet. |
| Cloud security group | Allow the configured ports in the provider’s network firewall as well as inside the guest operating system. | A correctly configured guest still cannot receive external traffic. |
- Start the server with the custom configuration and watch the console or log for binding errors.
- From the same machine, verify that the process is listening on the configured port.
- From a different network, have a player find the server in the in-game browser or connect using the public address and port.
- Test the password with an ordinary, non-admin account.
- Join, place or modify a small object, leave, reconnect and verify that the change persisted.
- Read the server log after the test and fix warnings before inviting the whole group.
Do not test only from inside the same home network: some routers do not support reliable loopback connections, and a local success does not prove public reachability.
Day 6: persistence, mods and recovery
Back up the complete Saves directory and every configuration and permission file, including your custom XML and serveradmin.xml. A backup is useful only if it can be restored, so periodically copy it to a different disk or host and perform a test restore into a separate server directory.
Stop the server cleanly before copying live world files unless your backup method explicitly supports consistent snapshots. Keep dated backup folders and note the installed game branch and configuration version. Retain at least one backup from before each game update or major mod change.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAdd server-side mods only after confirming compatibility with the installed branch and clients. Keep mod versions aligned; a client that lacks a required mod or uses a different version may fail to connect or behave incorrectly. Introduce one mod or small group at a time so a later fault has a clear cause.
Automate recovery from an unexpected exit. A wrapper script can restart the process after a delay; Linux hosts can use a systemd service with a restart policy; managed panels usually expose an equivalent setting. Set a delay rather than an immediate tight loop, because repeated crashes can fill logs and hide the original error.
Schedule SteamCMD updates during a maintenance window. Announce the restart, stop the server, back up the world and configuration, run the app update, start the process and perform a short connection test. If the update changes settings or breaks a mod, restore the previous build or configuration where your hosting arrangement allows it.

Day 7: hand off a tested server
Complete this checklist before calling the server ready:
- A non-admin player can connect from outside the host network.
- The server name, description and PvE rules are visible to invited players.
- The password or whitelist admits the intended people and rejects an unapproved account.
- Admin permissions work for trusted SteamIDs and are absent from ordinary players.
- A player action survives a disconnect and restart.
- A backup has been created and a restore has been tested.
- The restart wrapper, systemd service or panel policy brings the server back after a controlled stop.
- The update procedure, maintenance window and rollback backup are documented.
Give players one set of join instructions containing the public address, port, password policy, server version or branch, expected mods and maintenance schedule. Record the installed branch and the date of the latest configuration backup for the next administrator.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Launching and operating the server safely
Use a repeatable launch script
Do not rely on a manually typed command that exists only in one administrator’s shell history. Store the -configfile and -dedicated arguments in a script or service definition. Use an absolute path for the executable and configuration when possible, and write standard output and errors to a dated log location.
Keep the custom configuration outside any directory that an update process replaces. If an update installer insists on a particular working directory, point it at the durable file rather than copying changes back into the shipped template by hand.
Separate routine administration from emergency recovery
Routine administration includes announcing restarts, reviewing logs, checking disk space and verifying that backups completed. Emergency recovery includes stopping a crashing process, restoring the most recent known-good save and removing a newly added mod. Document both procedures while the server is healthy; trying to invent them after data loss is slower and riskier.

The server will not launch on Windows
Check the executable path, working directory, permissions and the first error in the log rather than repeatedly double-clicking the file. A current setup guide identifies missing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables from 2022 onward as a possible cause of confusing Windows launch failures. It is a troubleshooting lead, not proof that every host needs a manual reinstall; verify the specific error and install only the runtime required by your build.
Also confirm that the custom XML is well-formed. An unmatched quote, a removed element or a value placed in the wrong property can prevent startup. Compare the file with a fresh shipped template and reapply value changes one at a time without changing the structure.

Players cannot see or join the server
- Confirm the process is running and listening on the configured port.
- Compare the port in the launch configuration, operating-system firewall and router or cloud security group.
- Check that NAT forwards to the server’s current local address, not an address changed by DHCP.
- Verify that the player is using the public address from outside the host network.
- Check the server log for a binding conflict or a failed network initialization.
- Ask whether the client and server are on compatible branches and whether required mods match.
If local players can join but internet players cannot, the fault is usually NAT, a security group or an upstream provider restriction rather than the XML gameplay settings.
Settings stopped working after an update
Do not assume the old property name still controls the feature. Updates can replace the shipped template, and V3-era builds may move experience, loot, difficulty or blood-moon choices into SandboxCode. Generate or inspect the current version’s configuration, compare its available fields with your custom file and migrate values into the new structure. Keep the old file as a dated backup, but do not launch an unverified mixture of old and new properties.
The world reverted or progress disappeared
Check whether the process was stopped while saving, whether the launch script points to a different save path and whether a second server instance is using another directory. Stop all instances, preserve the current files, then compare timestamps with the latest backup. Restore only after copying the suspect save aside so that a later investigation does not destroy evidence.
A mod causes crashes or connection failures
Stop the server, record the mod and game versions, then remove or roll back the newest change in a test copy. If the clean server starts and clients connect, reintroduce compatible mods one at a time. Never overwrite the only known-good backup while experimenting.
Keeping the server PvE over the long term
Revisit the rules whenever the player group changes. A password alone does not prevent a trusted player from griefing, and an administrator account cannot replace clear expectations. Review the whitelist, remove departed players, audit serveradmin.xml and rotate the password when it has spread beyond the intended group.
Watch disk growth, save duration, CPU load and restart frequency. Increase player slots only after the current group can play without lag and backups complete within the maintenance window. Keep updates and mod changes separate when possible, so a problem has one likely cause and one clear rollback.
The durable pattern is simple: install app 294420 separately, launch from a copied configuration, expose only the required ports, give ordinary players no administrative power, and treat backups and restart automation as part of the server itself. That pattern survives routine updates far better than editing the shipped XML or relying on one person’s home computer and memory.
