Understand the three-part SHOUTcast setup
A working station has three distinct roles:
- DNAS server: SHOUTcast Distributed Network Audio Server (DNAS) runs on the VPS and accepts an audio source connection while serving listeners.
- Source or encoder: A desktop, hardware, or software encoder sends compressed audio and metadata to DNAS using the broadcaster password.
- Listeners: Players connect to the VPS address, listening port, and stream path exposed by DNAS.
The VPS is not an encoder. Installing DNAS alone produces no audio; a source must connect before listeners hear a programme. Internet broadcasting also requires a reachable network path, including the VPS firewall, provider security group, and any router or external firewall in front of the server.

Check prerequisites before installing
VPS and operating-system requirements
Choose a Linux VPS with a public IPv4 address or another publicly reachable address, root or sudo access, and enough bandwidth for your expected audience. SHOUTcast’s current product information lists Linux 32-bit and 64-bit builds. The DNAS manuals and getting-started material are older than many current distributions, so confirm that the downloaded build starts on your chosen release before committing to a production station.
Use a dedicated DNS name if you have one, but test with the VPS address first. Reserve one TCP port for listeners and source connections. The documented default is portbase=8000; you may choose another unoccupied port to fit your firewall policy.

Information to have ready
- The VPS address or DNS name.
- A strong broadcaster password and a different, stronger administrator password.
- The encoder’s supported codec, bitrate, and metadata settings.
- Access to the VPS provider’s network-security or security-group controls.
- A separate internet connection, such as a phone hotspot, for an outside-listener test.
Obtain and unpack SHOUTcast DNAS
Download the Linux SHOUTcast Server Software package from the official SHOUTcast distribution page and verify that it is intended for your CPU architecture. Keep the archive outside the final directory so you can replace the installation cleanly during an upgrade.

Create a dedicated directory and enter it:
sudo mkdir -p /opt/shoutcast sudo chown $USER:$USER /opt/shoutcast cd /opt/shoutcast -
Copy the downloaded archive into this directory and extract it. The archive name varies by release; use the exact filename you downloaded:

List the extracted files and locate
sc_servand the sample configuration, commonly namedsc_serv.conf:ls -la -
Make a working copy of the sample configuration before editing:
cp sc_serv.conf sc_serv.conf.backup
Do not expose the service while the sample credentials are still in place. Treat the configuration file as a secret because it contains passwords and may contain directory-registration settings.
Configure DNAS before opening the port
Set separate broadcaster and administrator passwords
Open the configuration in your preferred editor:
nano /opt/shoutcast/sc_serv.confSet the password value used by encoders and set adminpassword to a different value used for the web administration interface. The DNAS documentation requires these values not to be identical. Use long, random passwords and do not paste the administrator password into encoder software.
Choose the listening port and legacy behavior
Set portbase to the TCP port you intend to publish, for example:
portbase=8000For legacy SHOUTcast 1 source clients, DNAS traditionally uses portbase+1 for a source connection unless the portlegacy setting changes that behavior. Account for both ports when an older encoder requires the legacy interface. Modern source clients may connect directly to the configured base port, so follow the encoder’s SHOUTcast mode instructions rather than assuming every client uses the same endpoint.

Review stream and directory settings
Read the sample file’s comments instead of deleting settings you do not recognize. If you define multiple streams, each stream can have its own identifier and streampath. The path is part of the listener URL and must be supplied to players and directory settings. Keep the default single-stream arrangement until one source and one listener work reliably.
Save the file, then restart DNAS after any configuration change. The manual specifically requires a restart for edited credentials and other settings to take effect.

Run DNAS as a daemon
From the installation directory, grant execute permission to the server binary:
cd /opt/shoutcast
chmod a+x sc_servStart it in daemon mode, explicitly naming the configuration file:
./sc_serv daemon ./sc_serv.confYou can also use ./sc_serv daemon when the binary’s default configuration lookup is appropriate. A successful daemon start prints a process ID. Record that PID or inspect the process table:
ps -ef | grep '[s]c_serv'To stop a running instance gracefully, send SIGTERM:

kill -15 1234Replace 1234 with the PID reported by your process check. Do not launch a second instance against the same port; it will fail with an address-in-use error or create confusing source and listener behavior.
Keep the process running after logout
For a trial station, start DNAS from an SSH session and verify the stream first. For production, run it under a process supervisor or a system service so it restarts after a VPS reboot. Use a dedicated unprivileged Linux account for the daemon where practical, grant that account ownership only of the SHOUTcast directory and logs, and keep administrative shell access separate.

Open the VPS network path
There are usually two independent controls: the operating-system firewall and the VPS provider’s security group or edge firewall. Permit TCP on the chosen listener port in both places. If legacy sources need the adjacent port, permit that port as well.
On a host using UFW, an example rule is:
sudo ufw allow 8000/tcp
sudo ufw statusUse your actual portbase value rather than blindly opening 8000. Keep SSH restricted to the addresses or VPN you administer from. Do not expose unrelated management services merely to make the stream work.
If the VPS sits behind a router or port-mapping layer, forward the public listener port to the private address where DNAS is bound. The advertised publicport must match the port that listeners can reach when mapping is involved. Check the path from outside the VPS network; a test made on the same private network can succeed even when internet listeners are blocked.
Connect an encoder or source
Install a SHOUTcast-compatible source and create a connection using the VPS address, the source port required by your DNAS configuration, and the broadcaster password. Select the correct stream or mount when the encoder offers a stream-ID field.
Legacy stream-ID syntax
For a legacy source targeting stream 2, append :#2 to the broadcaster password. For example, if the password is bob, enter bob:#2. Stream 1 is the default and does not need a suffix. A password that is correct for stream 1 will still be rejected if the encoder is pointed at stream 2 without the required syntax.
Audio and metadata settings
Choose a bitrate your VPS uplink and audience can sustain. The encoder should send the codec and bitrate that your players support, and its station name, title, and artist fields become stream metadata. Start with one source and avoid changing codec, bitrate, port, and stream ID simultaneously; changing one variable at a time makes connection failures diagnosable.

Open that URL in a player or browser from a separate network. A phone using cellular data is a simple outside test.

Confirm that audio starts and that the current title or artist metadata changes when the encoder sends new information.

Test a second listener while the first remains connected. Observe the DNAS listener count and logs rather than relying only on the encoder’s status.
If your configuration defines multiple streams, test each stream’s path separately. A working base port does not prove that every configured path or stream ID is reachable.
Publish the station in the SHOUTcast directory
Directory listing is optional. Make the stream stable and confirm that a listener outside the VPS can hear it before attempting registration.

Authenticate as the administrator using the configured
adminpassword, not the broadcaster password. -
Create an authhash in Server Summary. The authhash is required for YP2 directory registration.

Enter the authhash and the required YP2 directory settings in the DNAS configuration, save the file, and restart DNAS.

After restart, reconnect the source and check the directory status. Registration can fail if the source is offline, the authhash belongs to another stream, or the public address and port are not reachable.

Keep the authhash and administrator credentials private. Directory visibility is not a substitute for firewalling or stream authentication.

- Use least privilege: run DNAS as a dedicated non-root account and make configuration files readable only by that account and trusted administrators.
- Protect administration: restrict SSH and administrative access with provider firewall rules, a VPN, or an allowlist where your environment supports it. The admin interface shares the DNAS service path, so exposing the listener port also exposes that endpoint.
- Monitor state: check that the process remains present, review DNAS logs for source disconnects and repeated login failures, and alert on unexpected restarts.
- Back up configuration: retain a protected copy of the working configuration, authhash, stream definitions, and service-supervisor settings. Do not place passwords in publicly readable backups.
- Plan upgrades: keep the archive for the running version, test a new DNAS build in a separate directory, and preserve the old configuration until the new process has passed source and listener tests.
- Measure capacity: account for bitrate multiplied by concurrent listeners, protocol overhead, and other VPS traffic. The SHOUTcast Basic product page advertises up to 12,000 unique listeners and an improved scalability figure of 50 percent; that is a vendor claim, not an independent capacity guarantee for your VPS.
Self-hosted VPS versus managed radio hosting
A VPS is appropriate when you want control of the DNAS files, ports, firewall, and upgrade schedule. Managed hosting can be easier for an operator who does not want to maintain Linux services, but it trades away some low-level control. The practical differences are:

Troubleshoot the common failures
Permission denied when starting
Run chmod a+x sc_serv from the directory containing the binary, then execute it with ./sc_serv. Confirm that the filesystem is mounted with execution allowed and that you are using the Linux build rather than a Windows binary.
The encoder cannot connect
- Confirm that the DNAS process is running and listening on the expected port.
- Check that the encoder uses the VPS’s public address, not
localhostor a private address. - Re-enter the broadcaster password exactly, including
:#2when a legacy source targets stream 2. - Verify the selected port, legacy port behavior, provider security group, host firewall, and any port forwarding.
- Review DNAS logs for an authentication failure, rejected stream ID, or address-in-use condition.
Listeners cannot connect while the source is online
Test from outside the VPS network, confirm the listener TCP port is open in every firewall layer, and check the advertised publicport when mapping is used. If the station has multiple streams, include the configured streampath in the listener URL. A source connection proves only that the encoder reached DNAS; it does not prove that the listener path is publicly reachable.
The station does not appear in the directory
Keep a valid source connected, open Server Summary through the server-login link or /admin.cgi, authenticate with adminpassword, and create an authhash. Then verify YP2 settings, restart DNAS, and check directory status. A stream can be fully playable yet absent from the directory if registration was never enabled or the public endpoint cannot be reached.
Launch checklist
- Download the correct Linux DNAS build and unpack it into a dedicated directory.
- Set executable permission on
sc_serv. - Set different, strong
passwordandadminpasswordvalues. - Choose
portbaseand account for legacyportbase+1behavior if required. - Start DNAS in daemon mode and record its PID.
- Open the listener and any required legacy source port in the VPS and provider firewalls.
- Connect one encoder and verify stream ID, audio, and metadata.
- Test the listener URL from another network.
- Create an authhash and configure YP2 only if directory listing is wanted.
- Move the daemon to an unprivileged account, add supervision, monitor logs, and back up the protected configuration.
The Bottom Line
A reliable SHOUTcast VPS is mainly a coordination task: DNAS must be configured with separate credentials and a known port, every firewall layer must pass that port, an encoder must authenticate with the correct stream ID, and an outside listener must verify the public path. Directory registration comes afterward through an admin-created authhash.
