For the most reliable starting point, connect one TV or monitor, use a controller or mouse and keyboard, complete the network and Steam sign-in prompts, install every available SteamOS, hardware and controller update, and leave game resolution at the system default of 1080p. Test the games you actually play before raising resolution or changing advanced picture controls. Steam Machine can output higher resolutions, but no universal graphics preset or frame-rate result applies to every game.
Start with a clean, supported baseline
A good Steam Machine setup is less about finding one “best” graphics setting and more about establishing a known baseline. Valve’s Steam Support guidance treats 1080p as the default game resolution because it is intended to provide a good out-of-the-box experience and is the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. Once a game works correctly at that baseline, you can make targeted changes for your display and that title.

Performance depends on the game, its default settings, the selected output resolution and the display connection. The official material does not establish a universal frame-rate target, independent benchmark or one graphics preset that is best for every title.

For initial troubleshooting, remove intermediate equipment. Test the Machine directly into the display before adding a dock, AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or adapter. If you use DisplayPort-to-HDMI, Valve requires an active adapter or active cable; passive adapters are unsupported.
An input device
You must have a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard available for the first-run flow. Valve’s described setup route for a Steam Controller is a USB connection. A third-party gamepad can also be connected over USB during setup and paired over Bluetooth after the initial setup is complete.
A network connection
The Machine supports 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and Gigabit Ethernet. You can complete setup over Wi-Fi or connect Ethernet to a router or network switch when a wired connection is more practical or wireless reliability is poor.
Step-by-step initial setup
- Connect the display. Plug the Machine directly into one TV or monitor with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4. Select the matching input on the display. If you are diagnosing a black screen, leave switches, receivers and adapters disconnected until the direct connection works.
- Connect an input device. Attach the Steam Controller by USB for the initial flow, or connect a mouse and keyboard. A third-party gamepad may be used over USB and paired by Bluetooth later.
- Power on and follow the first-run prompts. The guided flow takes you through controller connection, network access and Steam sign-in. Complete each prompt rather than trying to configure games first.
- Join your network. Choose your Wi-Fi network and authenticate, or connect the Ethernet cable to the Machine and your router or switch. A wired connection can improve network consistency, but Valve does not claim that Ethernet increases rendering performance or frames per second.
- Sign in to Steam. Finish the account sign-in process shown on screen. Wait for the Gaming Mode interface to finish loading before changing display or controller settings.
- Check for updates. Install SteamOS, hardware and controller-related updates using the paths below, then restart if requested.
- Run one game at the baseline. Leave the output at 1080p initially. Play a representative section of the game you care about, including a busy scene if possible, before changing resolution or advanced picture controls.
Install every relevant update
Updating before diagnosing performance prevents an old system image or device firmware from being mistaken for a graphics problem. Valve separates the update controls by component:
- SteamOS: open Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Machine hardware: open Settings > System > Hardware Updates.
- Steam Controller, puck and wireless adapter: open Settings > Controller.
Allow downloads and installation to finish, then restart the Machine when the interface asks you to. If a controller, display or network behaves strangely after an update, restart the affected device as well. During troubleshooting, disconnect unnecessary USB devices and remove extra adapters so that only the required display, input and network equipment remains.
Use 1080p as your performance reference
Why the default matters
Valve identifies 1080p as Steam Machine’s system-default game resolution. It is also the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing, making it the clearest common reference point in the official guidance. Starting there gives you a useful comparison when a game’s own settings change.

When to raise resolution
If the 1080p image is stable and you want a sharper picture, change resolution globally through Settings > Display or use the individual game’s display settings. Change one setting at a time and test the same scene or play session afterward. A higher output resolution increases the rendering workload in many games, so performance can change even when every other option remains the same.
Do not interpret the product page’s port specifications or “up to 4K” language as a promise that every demanding game will render at 4K with a particular frame rate. The official product information does not provide an independent comparative FPS figure or a universal 4K performance guarantee.
Choose per game rather than forcing one global preset
Different games have different defaults, engines and graphics menus. A resolution that is comfortable for one title may produce an unacceptable result in another. Keep a known 1080p baseline, then adjust the game that needs attention instead of assuming a global change will improve every title.
What the published video limits actually mean
HDMI 2.0 is specified for up to 4K at 120Hz. DisplayPort 1.4 is specified for up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz. Those figures describe the signal a port can carry under the appropriate conditions; they do not say that a particular game will render at that resolution and refresh rate. A demanding title may need a lower resolution or different in-game settings even when the television and cable accept the larger signal.
Use the connection that matches your display, then judge the result in the game. Do not buy a faster cable or change ports expecting a guaranteed FPS increase. Port capability, rendering performance and the display’s own limits are separate things.
Set up HDR and picture quality in the right order
Picture quality is the combined result of the Machine, the TV or monitor and the game. Steam Machine’s advanced display options include HDR, SDR brightness, color temperature and RGB output range. Your display may also expose HDMI format, color depth, range, black level and image-processing controls. A game may provide its own HDR calibration screen.

- Establish a working SDR baseline. Confirm that the desktop and a game display correctly before enabling advanced processing.
- Match the signal range. Set RGB output range and the display’s corresponding black-level or range control consistently. A mismatch can make blacks look gray, crush shadow detail or make the image appear washed out.
- Enable HDR only when the display supports it. Use the Machine’s HDR option together with the television or monitor’s compatible HDMI mode. Do not assume that enabling HDR on only one side produces a correct image.
- Adjust SDR brightness and color temperature. Make small changes while viewing familiar game scenes; these controls affect the appearance of SDR content and do not replace a game’s HDR calibration.
- Calibrate inside the game. When a title offers HDR sliders or a logo-and-black-level test, follow that game’s instructions after the system and display are matched.
- Recheck after changing ports or displays. A new HDMI input, cable path or display preset may use different range and format defaults.
There is no single display-option combination that Valve identifies as best for every television, monitor and game. The correct values depend on the capabilities and current picture mode of your equipment.
Understand the display connection limits
| Connection or capability | Published specification or behavior | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI 2.0 | Up to 4K at 120Hz | A port capability, not a guarantee that demanding games render at 4K and 120 frames per second. |
| DisplayPort 1.4 | Up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz | Maximum signal specifications; game performance still depends on the title, resolution and settings. |
| Gaming Mode displays | One display at a time | Disconnect additional screens while setting up or troubleshooting. |
| DisplayPort-to-HDMI | Active adapter or cable required | Passive adapters are unsupported by Valve. |
Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet for stability, not graphics speed
Use Wi-Fi 6E when the Machine has a strong, stable wireless path to the router. If the signal is weak, congested or unreliable, connect the Gigabit Ethernet port to the router or a switch. Wired networking is especially useful when downloads or online play repeatedly lose connection.
Ethernet affects the network path, not the Machine’s rendering hardware. It can reduce wireless interruptions, but it is not a graphics upgrade and should not be expected to increase offline game FPS.
If setup cannot connect
- Restart the Machine and router.
- Move the Machine closer to the wireless access point or test Ethernet.
- Remove unnecessary peripherals and adapters while completing setup.
- Verify that other devices can reach the same network.
- After the connection works, return to the update menus and install pending software and hardware updates.
Storage and hardware context
Valve lists Steam Machine in 512GB and 2TB NVMe SSD configurations, and both include microSD expansion. Choose capacity based on how many games you want installed; storage size does not determine rendered resolution, refresh rate or frame rate. If you use microSD expansion, treat it as additional capacity rather than a graphics-performance setting.
| Component or feature | Published detail | Performance implication |
|---|---|---|
| System memory | 16GB DDR5 | Shared system-memory specification; it is not an FPS rating. |
| Graphics memory | 8GB GDDR6 VRAM | Video-memory capacity does not establish a universal quality preset or frame rate. |
| Internal storage | 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD configurations | Both configurations include microSD expansion. Storage capacity does not determine rendered resolution. |
| Wireless | 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E | Useful for network access where wireless conditions are good; real throughput varies with the network. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.3 | Supports compatible wireless peripherals, including post-setup gamepad pairing. |
| Wired network | Gigabit Ethernet | Provides an alternative network path when wireless stability is insufficient. |
The product page also describes the Machine as having more than six times the horsepower of Steam Deck. That marketing comparison is not an independent benchmark and does not translate into a guaranteed frame rate for a particular game.
Troubleshoot in a controlled order
No picture or an unstable picture
- Power off the Machine and display.
- Connect the Machine directly to the display with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.
- Remove switches, receivers, soundbars, docks and adapters from the signal path.
- If converting DisplayPort to HDMI, replace any passive adapter with an active adapter or active cable.
- Confirm the display is set to the input you used.
- Once the direct connection works, add other equipment one item at a time.
A controller is not recognized
- Connect the Steam Controller by USB during the initial setup flow.
- For a third-party gamepad, test USB first, then pair it over Bluetooth after setup.
- Open Settings > Controller and install any available controller, puck or wireless-adapter update.
- Restart the controller and Machine, then remove unrelated USB devices before testing again.
A game performs poorly after a settings change
- Return the game to the 1080p baseline.
- Undo the most recent resolution, HDR or picture-quality change.
- Test the same game scene again.
- If performance returns, reapply changes one at a time and keep the setting that delivers the best balance for that title.
HDR looks washed out or too dark
- Check that HDR is enabled consistently on the Machine and display.
- Match RGB output range with the display’s range or black-level setting.
- Disable conflicting display image processing while testing.
- Run the game’s HDR calibration rather than relying only on the system menu.
A repeatable tuning workflow for each game
- Update first. Confirm SteamOS, hardware and relevant controller updates are installed.
- Record the baseline. Use 1080p and the game’s default settings initially.
- Test a representative workload. Include the areas where you normally notice slowdowns, not just a quiet menu or opening scene.
- Change one variable. Raise resolution, alter a game option or enable HDR, but do not change several controls at once.
- Compare the same scenario. Use the same level, camera position or repeatable activity so the result is meaningful.
- Keep the title-specific choice. A setting that improves one game may not help another, so maintain separate preferences when the game supports them.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Starting with a multi-display, receiver or switch configuration instead of proving a direct one-display connection.
- Using a passive DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter.
- Changing resolution before installing system and hardware updates.
- Treating HDMI or DisplayPort maximum signal specifications as guaranteed game performance.
- Assuming an Ethernet cable increases rendering FPS.
- Enabling HDR without matching the display’s format, range and black-level settings.
- Applying a single global graphics preset without testing the specific games you play.
- Using a frame-rate expectation based solely on the “more than six times Steam Deck” marketing comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Should I start at 1080p even with a 4K television?
Yes. Valve sets 1080p as the system default and uses it for Steam Machine Verified testing. Establish that baseline first, then try a higher resolution in the games that remain stable and look better on your display.
