To set up a Valve Index from scratch, first confirm that your computer has a supported operating system, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 970- or Radeon RX 480-class graphics card, a native DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output, USB, and broadband internet. Clear a room-scale play area of at least 2 m × 1.5 m, position and power the SteamVR base stations, connect the headset’s DisplayPort, USB, and power leads, then launch SteamVR and complete Room Setup. The installation is complete when every device is solid green and the virtual floor, facing direction, and boundary match the room.
Check the computer before unpacking
The Index depends on the graphics output, USB connection, tracking hardware, and SteamVR software all working together. Checking those prerequisites first prevents a common mistake: trying to diagnose a headset that cannot receive a supported video signal from the computer.

Minimum hardware and software
| Requirement | Valve’s stated minimum or requirement | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, SteamOS, or Linux | Install current system updates before beginning. |
| Processor | Dual-core CPU with hyper-threading | Confirm the processor exposes hyper-threading or an equivalent simultaneous-multithreading feature. |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | Close unnecessary applications so SteamVR has available memory. |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 480 minimum class | Install the latest driver supplied for the card and connect the headset to that card, not a motherboard video output. |
| Video connection | DisplayPort 1.2 or newer | The computer must have a native DisplayPort output. HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters are unsupported. |
| USB | USB 2.0 or newer required | USB 3.0 or newer is recommended for the headset cameras. |
| Internet | Broadband internet | Steam, SteamVR, drivers, and setup components need a working connection. |
These are minimums, not a promise of identical performance in every VR application. Valve recommends a stronger graphics card for demanding games. If your computer has only HDMI video outputs, do not buy an adapter as a workaround; use a graphics card with a native DisplayPort connection instead.
Install Steam and SteamVR
- Install the Steam client and sign in to the account that will run VR games.
- Install SteamVR from the Steam store or library.
- Update Windows, SteamOS, or Linux and install the current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer.
- Run Valve’s VR compatibility test if you are uncertain whether the processor, graphics card, or memory meets the baseline.
Restart the computer after a major operating-system or graphics-driver update. Starting with a clean, current software environment makes later cable and tracking checks meaningful.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you prefer an automated driver check, a utility such as Outbyte Driver Updater is optional third-party software, not a Valve requirement or endorsement. Use the GPU manufacturer’s driver page as the authoritative source and avoid any tool that promises to fix hardware or SteamVR problems automatically.
Prepare a safe play area
Room-scale tracking is only as good as the space you give it. Valve specifies at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of free space for Room Scale VR. Standing or seated play can use less space, but any movement boundary you draw must still leave room for your hands, controllers, and headset.
Clear the entire volume, not just the floor
- Move furniture, lamps, boxes, and loose cables outside the play area.
- Keep out of reach walls, windows, mirrors, and other surfaces that you could strike with a controller.
- Remove or block access to stairs and other drops.
- Keep pets and other people away while the headset is in use.
- Check overhead clearance as well as the floor; an outstretched controller can hit a ceiling fan or light.
Walk the boundary once before putting on the headset. If you cannot comfortably extend both arms in every direction, reduce the virtual boundary or choose standing/seated play rather than forcing room-scale dimensions.

Install and aim the base stations
The Index uses SteamVR tracking stations to establish the play space. One station is the minimum for a working setup; Valve recommends two for room-scale coverage. Use stations from the same generation: Valve’s troubleshooting guidance specifically warns against mixing 1.0 and 2.0 stations in one setup.
Choose positions
- Place or mount the stations so each has a clear view of the center of the play area.
- Position them high or low as the room allows, then tilt each station toward the center rather than straight across the room.
- Keep shelves, curtains, furniture, and other objects from blocking the station’s view of the headset.
- Power each station and wait for it to start before moving on.
Tracking can fail even when a station is powered if the headset cannot see its optical signals. Recheck the line of sight whenever you rearrange furniture or change the boundary.
Wall-mounting supplies
Valve’s wall-mount instructions call for a Phillips screwdriver and a drill with a 1/4-inch or 6 mm bit. Use suitable anchors when fastening into drywall; omit the anchors when the screw goes directly into a stud. Tighten the mount securely, but do not aim a station until the hardware is stable.
Finish the station preparation
- Remove the protective film from each station’s lenses.
- Power the stations and confirm that their status lights indicate operation.
- Stand in the middle of the intended play area and visually confirm that both stations can see that position.
Connect the Index headset
The Index headset has separate video, data, and power connections. Make all three connections before launching SteamVR.

- Plug the headset’s DisplayPort lead into a native DisplayPort output on the graphics card.
- Plug the headset’s USB lead into a USB port on the computer. USB 2.0 satisfies the requirement; USB 3.0 or newer is recommended when using the headset cameras.
- Connect the headset power adapter to an electrical outlet.
- Inspect each connector for a partial insertion, then leave the cables with enough slack that turning your head will not pull on a plug.
Do not use HDMI or a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. Valve lists those connections as unsupported, so an adapter can produce a blank or intermittent display that software troubleshooting cannot fix.
Understand the cable symptoms
A completely dark headset with no SteamVR detection usually points to power, DisplayPort, or USB. A headset that appears in SteamVR but loses its picture when you turn your head is more likely to have a loose connector or cable strain. Test each plug without sharply bending the lead, and connect DisplayPort directly to the discrete graphics card rather than a motherboard video output.
Start SteamVR and complete Room Setup
Launch and check the device states
- Open Steam.
- Start SteamVR by selecting the VR button in the Steam client, or press the System button on a compatible VR controller.
- Watch the SteamVR monitor window while the headset, controllers, and base stations initialize.
- Continue only when every device is shown as solid green.
A device that remains gray, red, or otherwise not ready needs troubleshooting before you draw a boundary. Room Setup cannot correct a disconnected cable or an unpowered tracking station.
Run Room Setup
- Choose Room Setup from SteamVR.
- Select the room-scale option if you intend to move around; choose standing or seated setup when the available area is smaller.
- Follow the floor-height instruction so SteamVR knows where the physical floor is.
- Set the forward direction and room orientation as prompted.
- Trace the usable boundary with a controller, keeping it inside the cleared area.
- Finish the wizard and put on the headset to verify that the virtual floor and chaperone boundary line up with the room.
Run Room Setup again whenever the floor appears too high or low, the front direction is rotated, the furniture changes, or the play area is different. The wizard stores a coordinate relationship for the current room; it does not make a moved base station or a new furniture layout automatically correct.
Pair controllers and fit the headset
Use compatible controllers
The Index works with Index Controllers and compatible Vive or Vive Pro wands. Turn on the controllers and follow SteamVR’s pairing prompt if they are not already listed. Keep each controller in view of the base stations while pairing.
Adjust the headset for a clear image
- Before putting the headset on, loosen the rear adjustment dial.
- Place the headset so the display is centered over your eyes.
- Turn the lens-distance knob to move the lenses closer or farther until text and distant objects are clear.
- Tighten the rear dial until the headset is snug without painful pressure.
- Pull the top strap so it carries part of the headset’s weight instead of leaving the entire load on your face.
If one eye is sharp and the other is not, reseat the headset and adjust the lens distance again before changing software settings. A poor fit can look like a rendering or tracking fault.

Configure Index audio and microphone
SteamVR can be running correctly while Windows sends sound to speakers or another headset. Configure playback and recording explicitly if you hear no game audio or the microphone is unavailable.
Set playback
- Leave SteamVR running.
- In Windows, select Index as the sound output device.
- In SteamVR, open Settings > Audio and choose the Index playback device.
- Start a VR application and adjust its in-game volume only after the Windows and SteamVR devices are correct.
Set the microphone
For the Index microphone, select Digital Audio Interface (Valve VR Radio & HMD Mic) as the Windows recording device. Test it in a voice application or Windows sound settings, then check the game’s own input selection if other players still cannot hear you.

Do this short check before launching a demanding game:
- All base stations are powered and have an unobstructed view of the play area.
- The headset display remains on while you turn your head slowly.
- Both controllers appear in SteamVR and respond to movement.
- The virtual floor touches the real floor and the front direction is correct.
- The boundary stays inside the cleared area.
- Index playback and microphone devices are selected if you intend to use them.
Walk slowly near the center of the boundary first. A sudden jump in the virtual floor, a controller that vanishes, or a headset display that disconnects points to a specific setup problem rather than a game-specific setting.
Troubleshoot a headset that is not detected
Start with connections and software
- Exit SteamVR.
- Reseat the DisplayPort, USB, and power connections at every accessible end.
- Confirm the DisplayPort plug is in the graphics card and not a motherboard port or unsupported adapter.
- Restart SteamVR.
- Restart Windows, SteamOS, or Linux if the device remains absent.
- Update the graphics driver, then verify SteamVR’s files through Steam.
After reconnecting, open SteamVR and wait for the device indicators again. If the headset is detected but the display drops out, use SteamVR’s Devices > Restart headset command before repeating the full computer restart.
When the status never turns solid green
Identify which icon is not green instead of changing several variables at once. A headset icon points first to DisplayPort, USB, and power; a base-station icon points to power or visibility; a controller icon points to pairing, battery, or tracking coverage. Verify the affected component, then rerun Room Setup only after the hardware is ready.

Troubleshoot tracking and an incorrect play area
Rebuild the room geometry
- Open SteamVR and choose Room Setup.
- Set the floor height again using the physical floor.
- Re-establish the forward direction.
- Trace the boundary again, keeping it away from obstacles.
If the result is still shifted, inspect the base stations. Both should face the center and have an unobstructed line of sight to the headset and controllers. A station that was bumped, rotated, or hidden behind furniture can make the entire virtual room appear wrong.
One station works, but room-scale coverage is poor
One station is sufficient for the minimum setup, but two are recommended for room-scale play. Add or correctly position the second station when tracking disappears as you turn away from the first. Do not combine SteamVR 1.0 and 2.0 stations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recover from SteamVR crashes or hangs
First restart SteamVR and then the computer, verify SteamVR files, and update the graphics driver. If SteamVR offers Safe Mode, use it to prevent some third-party drivers and components from loading. If the crash disappears in Safe Mode, investigate recently installed overlays, driver utilities, or other components that integrate with SteamVR one at a time rather than changing the headset wiring.
Once SteamVR starts normally again, check the device status and rerun Room Setup if the coordinate system was reset. A successful Safe Mode launch identifies a software conflict; it does not prove that the headset, base stations, or cables are defective.

The 2 m × 1.5 m figure applies to Room Scale VR. If your room cannot provide that clear rectangle, select standing or seated setup instead of drawing a boundary through furniture. You can still use the headset and controllers, but keep the chair, desk, and surrounding objects outside the range of your arm movements. Re-run the wizard if you later move to a larger area.
Keep the setup reliable after installation
- Leave the base stations aimed at the same central point and avoid moving them between sessions.
- Keep their lenses uncovered and their view clear.
- Store the headset so its DisplayPort and USB leads are not sharply bent.
- Run Room Setup after moving a station, changing the room, or seeing a misplaced floor or boundary.
- When a failure returns, change one thing at a time—cable seating, driver, SteamVR restart, station position, or Room Setup—so the cause remains identifiable.
With the computer meeting Valve’s baseline, a clear 2 m × 1.5 m area, correctly aimed stations, native DisplayPort, USB, power, and a completed Room Setup, the Index is ready for SteamVR applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a Valve Index through HDMI?
No. Valve requires a native DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output and lists HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters as unsupported. Connect the headset directly to a compatible output on the discrete graphics card.
Do I need two base stations to use the Index?
One station is the minimum for a working setup, but Valve recommends two for room-scale coverage. Two stations reduce areas where your headset or controllers can lose optical tracking as you turn around.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow large must my room be?
Valve specifies at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of clear space for Room Scale VR. Standing or seated setup can use less space, provided your controllers and headset cannot strike nearby objects.
Why is my headset detected but the screen keeps disconnecting?
Reseat the DisplayPort, USB, and power connections, check for cable strain, and make sure DisplayPort is connected to the graphics card. With SteamVR open, try Devices > Restart headset, then restart the computer if the problem continues.
What should I do when a SteamVR device is not green?
Note which icon is affected. Check power and line of sight for a base station, DisplayPort/USB/power for the headset, and pairing, battery, and tracking coverage for a controller. Restart SteamVR, verify its files, update the graphics driver, and restart the operating system.
Why is my virtual floor or boundary in the wrong place?
Run Room Setup again and carefully set the physical floor, forward direction, and boundary. Confirm that stations face the center and have an unobstructed view. Rerun the wizard after moving a station or changing furniture.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What microphone should I select for the Index?
In Windows recording devices, choose Digital Audio Interface (Valve VR Radio & HMD Mic). For playback, choose Index in Windows and select the Index device under SteamVR Settings > Audio.
Can third-party software cause SteamVR crashes?
Yes. SteamVR Safe Mode prevents some third-party drivers and components from loading. If it works there, disable or investigate overlays, driver utilities, and other integrations one at a time. Safe Mode does not by itself indicate defective hardware.
The Bottom Line
Set up the Valve Index in this order: meet Valve’s PC requirements, clear at least 2 m × 1.5 m for room-scale play, mount and aim compatible base stations, connect native DisplayPort, USB, and power, then wait for every SteamVR device to turn solid green before running Room Setup. Fit the headset, select Index audio and microphone devices, and troubleshoot one connection or software variable at a time when tracking or detection fails.
