Yes—a Raspberry Pi 5 can run a YouTube stream continuously, but whether it will do so reliably depends on the source, encoding workload, cooling, network, and recovery setup. This guide walks through a Pi-hosted setup and the checks needed before leaving it unattended. If the goal is to loop prerecorded videos rather than stream a live camera or game capture, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is another option.
What you need to decide first
A Raspberry Pi 5 is a local encoder: it takes a video source, sends a live feed to YouTube, and must remain powered and connected for the stream to continue. A fixed prerecorded source and a live camera or capture source can require different software and processing. The key distinction is whether the video can be passed through in a compatible format or has to be re-encoded on the Pi. Re-encoding increases processor load and heat.
- For a local live source: a Pi-hosted encoder can provide local control, but confirm that your chosen camera, capture device, software, and encoding settings work together.
- For looping prerecorded video: a cloud 24/7 service may suit the job better because it does not require a home computer to remain on. YouTube lists cloud services including Gyre and Upstream as encoder options; check their current availability and terms directly.
- For either approach: “24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee. Test the complete setup, including how it recovers from a dropped connection or a reboot.
No workload-independent maximum resolution or frame rate for continuous Raspberry Pi 5 encoding is established here. Verify the specific source, encoder build, and settings on the actual hardware rather than assuming a configuration will sustain a particular output.
Enable YouTube Live and create the broadcast
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before planning a launch.
- Open Live Control Room and create or select a broadcast. Set its title, privacy, and other stream details for your channel.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. The encoder sends to the URL using the key. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public code, screenshots, or logs.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder’s server and key fields. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public.
See YouTube’s current workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi 5
Power and network
Raspberry Pi recommends its 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5 and documents a 5 V, 5 A requirement. With a 3 A supply, available current for downstream peripherals is limited to 600 mA, which may matter if the setup includes USB capture or audio equipment. Check the power needs of the complete assembly, not just the board. Pi 5 supports Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi; use wired Ethernet for a fixed installation when practical, while remembering that no local connection choice can prevent an internet-service interruption. See the Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
Cooling for a sustained workload
Raspberry Pi describes active cooling as a good choice for best Pi 5 performance. In its heavy CPU stress test, published on 2023-10-04, the processor exceeded its 85°C thermal limit and throttled without cooling; with the Active Cooler in that test, Raspberry Pi reported load temperatures around 60–63°C. Those figures are from Raspberry Pi’s stress-test setup, not a YouTube-streaming benchmark. Choose cooling based on the real workload and monitor temperature and throttling during a representative long run. See Raspberry Pi’s heating and cooling article.

Use an encoder suited to the source
For a simple fixed source, a headless FFmpeg process is one possible low-overhead approach. A community example, YouTube AutoEncoder, runs FFmpeg under systemd and illustrates recovery concerns. It is an implementation example, not an official YouTube recommendation or a guarantee that a new setup will be reliable.

If the production needs overlays, multiple sources, or other controls, choose software that supports those needs and verify compatibility with the Pi’s operating system, source devices, and encoding capabilities. Do not reuse an old command without checking that its camera interface, FFmpeg build, input format, and YouTube settings still match your setup.

If the input is already compatible with the intended YouTube stream, passing it through can avoid the added CPU work of re-encoding. If the Pi must encode the source, the resulting workload depends on the resolution, frame rate, codec, and software path. Measure performance during the actual stream; do not infer a continuous-encoding limit from a different workload.
Set YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its audio guidance lists AAC or MP3, with 128 Kbps stereo as a recommended setting. Check that your encoder and input support the chosen format; use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance when configuring the stream.

H.264 bitrate guidance from YouTube
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed H.264 ingest figures, not a promise that a given Pi or internet connection can sustain them. Set the output according to the upload capacity that is reliably available to the Pi, leave headroom for variation, and test for dropped frames and stream-health warnings. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewer formats, so the encoder does not need to produce every resolution viewers may use.
Make the process recover after interruptions
A stream that starts successfully is not automatically an unattended stream. Configure the encoder to start at boot and restart after a process failure—for example, using a systemd service—and separately verify how the YouTube broadcast behaves after a disconnect. A process supervisor can restart the encoder, but it does not by itself resolve every broadcast lifecycle state.

- Source or camera loss: check whether the encoder waits, exits, or resumes when the source returns.
- Network interruption: test whether the encoder reconnects and whether the existing broadcast resumes as intended.
- Encoder crash: confirm the service manager restarts the process and that the stream returns to YouTube.
- Host reboot: confirm the service starts at boot and can access the source and stream configuration.
- Broadcast state: verify whether reconnecting resumes the intended YouTube broadcast or requires a new one, and check whether it returns to public when that is what you want.
The YouTube AutoEncoder project demonstrates that source loss, encoder crashes, network interruptions, host reboots, and broadcast lifecycle handling are distinct recovery concerns. Its behavior is not a reliability guarantee for another installation.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Use a representative source. Include the movement and audio expected in the real stream; YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement.
- Check Live Control Room. Confirm the preview appears and watch stream-health messages rather than relying only on the encoder’s “connected” status.
- Monitor the Pi. During a long run, record the actual output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, temperature, and throttling state.
- Exercise recovery. Simulate a network interruption and a host reboot, then check that the stream returns and the YouTube broadcast is in the intended state.
- Run it for the intended workload and duration. A brief successful test does not establish that the same configuration will remain stable continuously.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
YouTube does not show the stream
Check that live streaming has been enabled on the channel, that first-time activation has completed, and that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key. Keep the key private; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
The connection starts but stream health is poor
Check the actual upload capacity and whether it can sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot hold the target, then test again. Confirm CBR and the keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance, and inspect Live Control Room messages.
The Pi slows down or throttles
Check the cooling arrangement and observe temperature and throttling during the real workload. If the stream is being re-encoded, test a less demanding output setting or a compatible pass-through path where possible. A stress-test temperature is not a substitute for measuring your streaming workload.

The stream stops after a source, network, or power interruption
Identify which part failed: source availability, encoder process, Pi power, network, or YouTube broadcast state. Configure and test process restart, source recovery, and reconnect behavior separately. A supervisor restarting FFmpeg does not prove that the broadcast has resumed correctly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to loop uploaded videos on YouTube rather than stream from a live camera or capture source, StreamNeo keeps the stream running in the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer can be off, and automatic recovery handles a YouTube stream drop.
