To loop ambient rain footage on YouTube, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, set the video to repeat in OBS, connect OBS with the stream URL and key, check YouTube’s preview, then start the broadcast. An all-day broadcast can keep playing, but YouTube may not save a stream longer than 12 hours as an archive, and viewer rewind may be limited. If a complete replay matters, record locally or plan shorter sessions.
Before you start: check eligibility and prepare the video
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by a creator who is at least 16. Requirements and Studio labels can change, so check the current YouTube help page and your channel’s Live Control Room before preparing a long broadcast.
Use footage and sound you have rights to stream
Make sure you have the necessary rights for both the image and audio in the file, including any music or other sound mixed into a rain recording. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for those rights on the person providing the live content. A broadcast can be terminated if YouTube receives a copyright strike or detects a match to another copyrighted live broadcast; see YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams. Naturally recorded rain is not automatically free of rights issues.
Set up a looping rain video in OBS
Loop one video file
- Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Choose the rain video file on your computer.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties, then confirm the source.
- Preview the scene and let the file reach its end so you can inspect how it restarts. A clean visual and audio transition depends on the actual file and its endpoints.
OBS documents the Media Source loop option in its Media Sources guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Loop a playlist of rain clips
If you want several clips to cycle, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS notes that VLC must be installed for this source type to be available. Check transitions between clips for changes in brightness, framing, or sound level before broadcasting.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide walks through creating the stream and checking its preview.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into OBS’s stream settings. The key is a credential that directs your encoder feed to the right stream; keep it private. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming video to appear in Live Control Room, check the picture and audio, then select Go Live if Studio presents that step.
- Watch the broadcast from a separate device or browser session to confirm viewers can see and hear the intended scene.
YouTube supports encoder workflows using RTMP or RTMPS and also documents HLS ingestion. HLS has different transport requirements and higher latency than RTMP; there is no need to choose it just to loop a rain file. Follow the protocol and settings offered by your encoder and current YouTube stream configuration. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Choose stream settings and test the connection
There is no single bitrate, resolution, or computer specification that can be recommended for every rain video and setup. Match the encoder output to your source, hardware, and available upload bandwidth, and use the settings provided for your stream rather than copying an unrelated recipe.
- Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%. Its streaming tips also emphasize a reliable connection.
- Test before going public: use a private or unlisted test to check that the file repeats, audio continues, the picture remains correct, and the connection stays stable.
- Monitor the broadcast: watch YouTube’s incoming preview and check the stream from a viewer’s perspective. A network interruption can break a live stream.
- Consider wired networking if Wi-Fi is unstable: a reliable connection matters, but YouTube does not require Ethernet or a particular cable.
Plan for archives and viewer rewind
A stream that stays live all day is not necessarily preserved as one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local backup. Separately, YouTube’s DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

If you need a replay, record locally and consider ending and restarting the broadcast at planned intervals shorter than 12 hours. Check each resulting archive; a planned restart is a practical way to work around the stated limits, not a guarantee that every archive will be captured as intended. A continuous stream may be simpler for viewers, while shorter sessions require you to handle each restart.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream does not appear in YouTube: check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the correct stream, and confirm the key has not been changed. Keep the key private.
- YouTube receives video but it is not live to viewers: inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room and complete the Go Live step if Studio requires it.
- The rain video stops at the end: open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a VLC Video playlist, enable Loop Playlist and make sure VLC is installed.
- The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: check the connection and reduce the total stream bitrate if it is too close to available upload capacity. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and test again.
- The audio or picture changes abruptly at a loop point: inspect the file’s beginning and end, or review the transitions between playlist clips. The loop setting restarts playback; it does not make mismatched endpoints seamless.
- The broadcast ends or is interrupted over copyright: verify that you have streaming rights for all visual and audio material, then review YouTube’s copyright notice and applicable channel status.
- A long stream has no complete replay or full rewind: YouTube’s archive and DVR limitations apply to streams beyond 12 hours. Use local recording and verify the archives from planned shorter sessions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer and home connection to remain on, StreamNeo can keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload the rain video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.
