1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can loop a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream by running an encoder on a Linux virtual machine (VM) in Google Cloud Compute Engine and sending its output to YouTube’s Live Control Room. You need a channel eligible to livestream, a billing-enabled Google Cloud project, a video file the VM can access, and an encoder configured with YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. This is a do-it-yourself setup: the VM must stay running, and you are responsible for configuring, monitoring, and restarting the encoder.
Before you begin
- Confirm livestream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before configuring the VM.
- Have an authorized video ready. Use media you have permission to stream, and make sure it has the audio and video you intend viewers to hear and see. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to prerecorded content.
- Prepare a Google Cloud project with billing enabled. VM runtime and network use can incur charges. The amount depends on the resources and usage you choose; no price is quoted here. Google’s Linux VM creation guide uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as an example, not a requirement.
- Choose how the video will reach the VM. Store it on VM-accessible storage or transfer it to the VM. Google and YouTube do not prescribe one specific storage product for this workflow.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then choose the privacy setting you want for the initial test. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS server URL when available: YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingest, and its RTMPS instructions explain how to reveal the RTMPS URL if the ordinary RTMP URL appears by default.
- Treat the key as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not expose it in a public repository, public logs, or screenshots. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings instructions.
Create and connect to a Compute Engine VM
- In Google Cloud Console, select the billing-enabled project, open Compute Engine > VM instances, and create a Linux VM. Follow Google’s create a Linux VM guide for the current console flow. Select resources appropriate to the video’s resolution, frame rate, and encoder; the documentation cited here does not establish a suitable machine size for every workload.
- Connect to the VM using the console’s SSH option, or another SSH method you have configured. Install and configure an encoder compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements. This article does not prescribe a copy-and-paste FFmpeg loop command: the exact loop flags, build support, and reconnect behavior were not established here, so verify the current FFmpeg documentation for your build and test your chosen command before relying on it.
- Make the authorized video file accessible to the VM. Confirm the file path and that the VM account running the encoder can read it.
- Check network connectivity from the VM to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A typical VM-initiated stream uses outbound traffic; Google says default VPC rules allow outgoing traffic and block incoming traffic by default. A public inbound firewall opening is not inherently required for the VM to send a stream, though machine type and routing affect available egress. See Google’s VM networking overview.
Configure the encoder for YouTube
Set the encoder’s destination to the RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Match the encoding settings to YouTube’s current recommendations, and consult its encoder settings guide for bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate; those bitrate recommendations can change, so do not assume an old value is current.
- Video codec: YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options.
- Audio codec: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 frames per second.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval if your encoder permits it; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: Choose settings the source and VM can sustain, then follow the current YouTube table for the matching resolution and frame rate.
Looping is an encoder-side behavior, not a YouTube Studio switch for repeating a prerecorded file. Confirm that the encoder is configured to repeat the file and that it continues sending after the file reaches its end. Because loop syntax and restart behavior vary by encoder and build, validate them with an actual test stream rather than assuming a command works.
Test the stream and monitor it
- Start with the stream set to private or unlisted while you verify the setup.
- Start the encoder on the VM and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room’s preview.
- Check both picture and sound, including the transition where the video should loop. Confirm the stream remains healthy beyond that point.
- Use Live Control Room to monitor stream health and correct any encoder or connection warnings before making the stream public. YouTube’s streaming tips cover previewing and monitoring.
- Only after the test succeeds, change the privacy or scheduling settings as needed for the intended audience.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder setup help. Do not treat that archive behavior as a substitute for monitoring a continuous loop.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the loop running—and know what you must manage
The stream depends on the VM and encoder process continuing to run. Plan how you will detect a stopped process, restart it, and verify that YouTube has resumed receiving the feed. The cited Google and YouTube guidance does not establish an automatic-recovery configuration for a particular VM or encoder, so test any restart mechanism you add rather than assuming it will recover cleanly.
Compute Engine charges can continue while the VM runs, and network usage may also contribute to costs. Google’s VM guide describes deleting an instance to avoid further VM charges when it is no longer needed; that is unsuitable while you expect the stream to remain live. Review current Google Cloud billing information for your project and configuration before leaving a VM running continuously.

Common problems and fixes
- No stream appears in Live Control Room: Verify the server URL and key, confirm the encoder is running, and check that it is using the RTMPS URL you selected. Reset the key if you suspect it was exposed, then update the encoder with the replacement.
- The stream starts but drops when the file ends: The encoder may not be set to loop, or its loop behavior may not work with that file or build. Check the encoder’s current documentation and test the end-to-start transition in a private or unlisted stream.
- Video or audio is missing or unstable: Check that the encoder’s codec, CBR mode, frame rate, keyframe interval, resolution, and bitrate follow YouTube’s current guidance. Confirm the VM can sustain the selected workload and outbound route.
- The VM cannot reach YouTube: Check the VM’s outbound connectivity and routing. Google’s default VPC rules allow outgoing connections, but actual egress depends on machine type and route configuration; do not open inbound access as a first fix for an outbound streaming problem.
- The stream stops after a VM or process interruption: Restart the encoder and check Live Control Room for a new incoming feed. If you configure automatic restarts, test what happens after both a process exit and a VM restart.
