Build and test the client first, create a clean Fabric server directory, accept the EULA, copy only server-compatible mods and shared configuration, then start the server with the Fabric launcher. The procedure below covers a self-hosted Windows or Linux server, managed-host limitations, memory planning and the errors most likely to stop the server from loading.

What All of Fabric 4 requires
All of Fabric 4 is a TeamAOE Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.17.1; the project also lists 1.17 as a supported game version. Its listed latest release is 1.1.3, with separate 1.1.3 server-pack files. The pack combines technology, magic, exploration, quests and custom structures, and its publisher describes more than 1,000 blocks and furniture items and more than 300 food and crop types. Those are pack-description figures, not independent performance measurements.

Use one version set on both sides. A dependable baseline is:

Fabric mods must match the Minecraft version, Fabric loader and Java edition they were built for. Do not update Minecraft, Fabric, the loader or individual mods simply because a newer file exists. Treat 1.17.1 and AOF4 1.1.3 as a locked set unless the project publishes a maintained migration path.

Before you create the server
Install and test the complete client
Create an AOF4 1.1.3 client instance first and launch it successfully. Enter a test world, let the pack finish loading, and note which mods and configuration files are present. Testing the client first exposes missing dependencies and identifies client-only additions before they can crash a dedicated server.
Keep a copy of the working client instance. You will use it as a reference when deciding which files belong in the server’s mods and config folders, but you should not copy every client file blindly.
Install Java 17 and verify the executable
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime or JDK on the machine that will run the server. Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:
java -versionThe reported major version should be 17. If the command reports another version, or if Windows resolves Java from an unexpected installation, correct the PATH or use the full path to the intended Java executable in your start script. A server launched with the wrong Java can fail before Fabric begins loading mods.
Choose a server location
Create a dedicated, writable folder such as C:MinecraftAOF4 on Windows or ~/minecraft/aof4 on Linux. Avoid placing a live world in a temporary download directory. Keeping the launcher, Minecraft server file, libraries, properties, mods, config and world in one directory makes backups and upgrades easier.
Get the Fabric server launcher and AOF4 server pack
Fabric launcher options
Fabric supports an executable server launcher for the selected Minecraft and loader versions. The executable route can download the required Fabric Loader and Minecraft files for you. The manual route creates fabric-server-launch.jar and expects a matching server.jar in the same directory.

Whichever route you use, select Minecraft 1.17.1 and a Fabric loader compatible with the AOF4 1.1.3 files. Do not let a hosting panel silently select a newer Minecraft version.
Extract the matching server pack
Download the AOF4 1.1.3 server-pack archive from the pack’s project download area, then extract its contents into the dedicated server folder. Do not nest the files inside an extra directory if your start script points at the parent folder.
With the manual launcher method, the important files are kept together:
fabric-server-launch.jarserver.jarlibraries/server.properties- the AOF4
mods/andconfig/directories
The exact archive contents can change between pack releases. The rule is to preserve the folder structure supplied with the matching server pack rather than replacing files with those from another AOF4 version.

Windows
- Open Command Prompt in the server folder. In File Explorer, you can use the folder’s address bar to open a terminal there.
- If the first launch creates
eula.txtand stops, open that file and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly after reading and accepting Mojang’s EULA. - Start the Fabric launcher with:
java -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui - Leave the window running until the log reports that the server has finished loading. Stop it with the
stopcommand in the server console before editing files or copying configuration.
Linux or macOS
- Change to the server directory, for example:
cd ~/minecraft/aof4 - Run the launcher once. If the EULA file is created, edit it and set
eula=trueafter accepting the terms. - Start the server with:
java -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui
The -Xmx2G value is only the simple Fabric command pattern. It is not an AOF4 performance recommendation. Increase the maximum heap to suit the pack and machine, while leaving enough RAM for the operating system and other services. For AOF4, the project page says at least 4 GB is recommended to run smoothly with 5–10 players; that is a publisher guideline, not a measured guarantee. CPU speed, view distance, world generation and server settings can change the result substantially.
If you use the executable launcher rather than the manual file layout, use the filename produced by that installer in the same command pattern and retain the nogui argument for a headless server.

Put the right mods on the server
Copy server-compatible AOF4 jars
Place the AOF4 server .jar files in the server’s mods directory. Most Fabric mods also require Fabric API, so include the Fabric API file supplied for the exact Minecraft 1.17.1 and Fabric combination. Every declared dependency must be present at a compatible version.
The safest workflow is to start from the server-pack mods folder, not from a random client download. If you compare it with the tested client, add only a mod that is documented as compatible with a dedicated server and that has all of its dependencies.
Keep client-only mods off the server
Client-only code can crash a dedicated server during class loading. Do not copy rendering, graphics or other client-exclusive jars into the server folder. Fabric’s Windows tutorial specifically warns against copying OptiFine or OptiFabric to a server. Remove those files if they appear in mods.
- Server side: gameplay, world-generation, content and server utility mods that explicitly support dedicated servers.
- Client side: graphics, shaders, rendering replacements, HUDs and other files that only change what one player sees.
- Both sides: mods whose documentation requires the same jar on client and server; install the exact matching file in both instances.
When unsure, read the mod’s stated environment and dependency list for Minecraft 1.17.1. A jar that works in the client is not automatically safe on a dedicated server.
Copy shared configuration and start cleanly
Some AOF4 settings must match between client and server, while others are local display preferences. After the server has generated its directories and you have stopped it cleanly, copy only the relevant configuration files from the tested client into the server’s config directory. Preserve the server pack’s existing structure and do not overwrite files with settings from a different AOF4 release.
- Stop the server with
stopand wait for the save to complete. - Back up the server’s current
configfolder. - Copy the shared AOF4 configuration files from the tested 1.1.3 client.
- Restart the server and watch the first loading log for a configuration or dependency error.
- If an error appears, restore the backup and change one file or mod at a time so the cause remains identifiable.
Do not repeatedly kill the process window. A clean stop reduces the chance of world corruption and ensures that configuration and region files are flushed to disk.

Create a repeatable start script
Windows start.bat
After the first successful launch, create a file named start.bat in the server folder. A minimal example is:

pauseChange -Xmx4G to the heap limit appropriate for your machine. The script’s value does not override the pack’s requirements; it only controls the maximum heap Java may use. The pause line keeps the window open after a crash so you can read the error.
Linux start.sh
#!/bin/sh
java -Xmx4G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar noguiSave the file in the server folder and make it executable with chmod +x start.sh. Run it from that directory so relative paths resolve to the intended mods, config and world folders.

For either script, keep a copy of the last known-good version. When changing Java, memory, the loader or mods, make one controlled change, launch, and inspect the log before making another.

Only test connections after the console reports a completed startup. Every player should install the same AOF4 1.1.3 client release, Minecraft 1.17.1 and compatible Fabric setup. A client on another pack release can fail with registry, dependency or missing-mod errors even when the server itself starts correctly.
For a self-hosted server, the machine owner is responsible for the network address, firewall and port forwarding required by the chosen network. Those settings vary by operating system, router and host, so verify them separately rather than changing the modpack to solve a connectivity problem. A managed host should provide its connection address and document which Fabric server jar it accepts.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches can run AOF4, but they transfer different responsibilities. Compare the practical differences before uploading a world:

The AOF4 project page documented a managed-hosting partnership in 2021, but that historical page does not establish a current price, service level or continued promotion. Treat any present-day hosting offer as something to verify directly with the provider. The project’s 4 GB recommendation also does not guarantee a particular plan will support a given view distance or player count.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The server exits immediately
- Run
java -versionin the same terminal or script used to start the server and confirm Java 17. - Confirm that
fabric-server-launch.jar,server.jarandlibraries/are in the expected folder for the manual method. - Read the first error and its “caused by” section before changing files. The first missing class or dependency is usually more useful than the final shutdown message.
- Check that Minecraft is 1.17.1 and that the loader and every mod target that version.
“Missing dependency” or Fabric API errors
Compare the server’s mods folder with the AOF4 1.1.3 server pack. Install Fabric API and every declared dependency for Minecraft 1.17.1. Do not satisfy a dependency by downloading a file built for another Minecraft release.
A dedicated server crashes while loading a mod
Remove client-only jars first, especially graphics and rendering additions. OptiFine and OptiFabric are specifically not server files. Then launch with only the known server-pack mods and add any extra mods one at a time.
Client and server report different registries or versions
Check both installations for Minecraft 1.17.1, Fabric and AOF4 1.1.3. Replace a mixed client or server directory with a clean copy rather than trying to repair a folder containing several releases. Ensure that a mod required on both sides is the identical compatible version.

An upgraded server shows classloading errors
When upgrading an existing Fabric server, remove the .fabric folder if the installer left stale files behind, then run the installer or launcher again. Fabric warns that stale files can cause classloading errors. Make a world backup before deleting generated support files.
The hosting panel insists on server.jar
Some hosts accept only a file with that exact name. Follow the Fabric tutorial’s documented rename-and-properties workaround, or ask the host to support Fabric directly. Do not rename arbitrary mod jars or replace the Fabric launcher with a vanilla server jar; the workaround must preserve the Fabric launch properties and matching files.
The server runs out of memory or lags during world generation
The AOF4 page’s “at least 4 GB for 5–10 players” statement is a guideline, not a benchmark. Check the machine’s available RAM, CPU load, view distance and the cost of generating new terrain. Raise the Java heap only when the operating system still has headroom, and reduce demanding server settings before assuming a different mod version will fix performance.
