Connect your microphone and other audio sources to the mixer, connect the mixer to your computer by USB or through a compatible audio interface, then select that device and its correct channels in OBS. Set gain on the mixer first, check OBS’s meters and mono/stereo routing, and make a rehearsal recording before streaming. A mixer is useful for multiple sources and hands-on control, but it is not required for every YouTube stream.

How the audio signal gets from the mixer to YouTube

The usual encoder-based route is: microphone and other sources → mixer inputs and controls → USB audio connection or supported output and audio interface → computer audio device → OBS audio source and mixer → YouTube encoder. Each link matters: hearing a microphone in the mixer’s headphones does not by itself confirm that OBS is receiving it or sending it to YouTube.

YouTube lists mixers and multiple microphones among equipment used for advanced encoder-based streams. A mixer is most useful when you need physical controls, several sources, or a particular hardware routing workflow; a simpler setup may not need one. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Set up the mixer, computer and OBS

1. Check inputs and routing

Connect each microphone or other source to a compatible mixer input. Check the manual for the connector type, required input power, driver requirements, USB channel routing, and whether the computer receives the main mix or separate channels. USB behavior is model-specific, so do not assume that every mixer sends the same signal to the computer.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Connect the mixer to the computer

Use the mixer’s USB audio connection if it supports the computer and workflow you need. Otherwise, use a supported mixer output connected to an audio interface. Confirm that the computer recognizes the actual mixer or interface and install any required manufacturer driver. For an interface example, Focusrite’s OBS setup guide shows how to add an Audio Input Capture source and select the interface and channels; menus and behavior vary by model.

3. Select the right device in OBS

  1. In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source, or select the mixer/interface under Settings → Audio if you are using a global input.
  2. Choose the recognized mixer or interface and the intended input or channels.
  3. Speak or play a source and watch the OBS audio mixer. The meter should move for the expected source.
  4. Avoid capturing the same mixer feed through both a global Mic/Aux device and a separately added source unless that duplication is intentional. Make a short recording and listen back to verify the route.

If the expected meter stays still or OBS selects the wrong device, check device selection in OBS’s Quick Start Guide.

4. Set gain on the mixer before adjusting OBS

Test at the loudest level you expect during the stream. Set each channel’s input gain so the source is clear and does not overload, balance sources with their channel controls, then set the mixer’s master output feeding the computer. Make final software adjustments only after the hardware signal is healthy. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide describes this device-to-mixer-to-computer path and recommends starting with the source device.

5. Check meters and leave digital headroom

Watch the OBS mixer while speaking or playing at normal and loud levels. OBS meters show source levels and peak history; red indicates a level close to clipping. Digital full scale is 0 dBFS: audio at or above that ceiling can distort in the stream or recording. If the signal is too hot, reduce the source gain or mixer output rather than relying on a later software adjustment to repair clipping. See OBS’s technical notes on audio levels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Verify mono and stereo routing

A single microphone is normally mono. Check that it is centered or downmixed so viewers hear it in both left and right channels. OBS uses stereo output by default; a misconfigured mono source can land on only one side. Confirm the interface’s input mode and channel assignment as well as OBS’s routing. Focusrite documents a mono-input setup in its interface-to-OBS guide.

7. Monitor at the hardware and software stages

First listen through the mixer or interface’s headphone/monitor output. Then check OBS’s audio monitoring path and its selected monitoring device. Use headphones, ideally from a separate monitor output, to avoid feeding speakers near the microphone back into the stream. Listen for hum, noise, missing sources, or feedback at both stages; a clean local mixer monitor does not prove the OBS route is correct.

8. Balance sources and check sync

Balance voice against game, desktop, music, or guest audio using the levels planned for the actual show. If sound and picture do not align, use the encoder’s sync-offset control and test a recording. There is no universal offset: it depends on how the computer processes audio and video. Focusrite likewise advises establishing the offset on the actual setup.

9. Rehearse with the real show

Record a test or run an unlisted/private stream using the planned sources, speaking distance, and activity. Listen back on another device or through headphones. Check both channels, clipping, noise, voice-to-game balance, and audio/video sync. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back; YouTube recommends a representative test with audio and movement, followed by stream-health monitoring during the event.

Audio settings for the YouTube encoder

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended advanced settings include 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps for stereo audio; for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC-only support. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. These are encoder audio settings, not mixer gain targets. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance when configuring your software, since platform settings can change.

Troubleshoot common mixer-to-OBS problems

  • OBS meter does not move: Confirm the mixer is powered, the channel is unmuted, the correct computer input is selected, and any required USB driver is available. Check the mixer’s USB routing, then test one source at a time. Use OBS’s device-selection guidance and the mixer/interface manual.
  • OBS meter moves, but the stream is silent: Check that the source is routed to the output or track used by the stream, not just to a local monitor. Record a short test and listen back; then check OBS’s encoder audio selection and YouTube’s preview.
  • Voice is only in one ear: Check mono/stereo assignment and enable mono or downmix routing where appropriate. Verify the interface input mode as well as OBS’s channels.
  • Audio distorts: Reduce the source gain or mixer master output and check the OBS meter again. Keep digital peaks below 0 dBFS; clipping introduced before OBS cannot be fixed by simply turning down the stream later.
  • Voice echoes or sounds doubled: Check whether the physical feed is captured twice, such as through both Mic/Aux and a separate source. Also check whether software monitoring returns to the mixer while the source is already being heard acoustically. Test with one capture and monitoring path active.
  • Audio is early or late: Make a test recording first, then adjust sync offset if needed. The correct value depends on the setup.
  • You cannot monitor, or monitoring feeds back: Confirm the selected monitoring device and hardware routing. Use headphones rather than speakers near the microphone, and check whether monitoring is being sent back into a captured input.

Choosing a mixer or interface for a gaming stream

There is no universal best mixer: match the device to the sources and routing you actually use. Before buying, check the exact model and generation’s manual for:

  • How many microphone and line inputs it has, and whether their connector types match your sources.
  • Whether USB sends a stereo main mix, multichannel inputs, or selectable routing to the computer.
  • Operating-system support, drivers, and compatibility with your OBS workflow.
  • Direct headphone monitoring, mute controls, physical faders, and whether computer-audio loopback is needed.
  • Power and portability requirements.

An audio interface can be a simpler alternative if you need a computer input but not mixer-style source controls. Monitor headphones help you check both the hardware and software paths. An XLR cable is relevant only when both the microphone and mixer use XLR connections. Choose based on the connections and routing you need, not on the assumption that every YouTube streamer needs a mixer.

Or let it run in the cloud

An audio mixer handles the sound you send into a stream; it does not keep an OBS session running when your gaming PC is off. If you want a pre-recorded YouTube stream to continue around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it is not a camera-live service.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud.
  • One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps, as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account).

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
