Run Enigmatica 2: Expert Skyblock as a Minecraft 1.12.2 server with 64-bit Java 8, the dedicated Skyblock server download, and at least 6 GB of allocated memory. Extract the files into a clean directory, launch the supplied platform script, accept the EULA, and set level-type=voidworld so new players receive islands instead of a normal terrain world.

What you need before installing
Enigmatica 2: Expert Skyblock (E2E Skyblock) is a heavily modded Minecraft 1.12.2 server. It is not installed by copying a regular client profile into a server folder. You need the dedicated Skyblock server package, a compatible Java runtime, enough memory for Forge and the mod set, and a directory where the server can create its world and configuration files.

Have administrator access to the machine, sufficient disk space for the mod files and world, and permission to open the server to the players who will connect. Decide whether you will operate the machine yourself or use a managed modded-Minecraft host before you begin; the files and settings are the same, but the host may provide the operating system, firewall, backups, and start/stop controls.
Install the correct 64-bit Java 8 runtime
Why Java 8 is required
Enigmatica 2: Expert Skyblock is a 1.12.2 project. Enigmatica’s official Java guide states that all of its modpacks require 64-bit Java and associates Minecraft 1.16 or earlier with Temurin/OpenJDK 8. Install a current 64-bit Java 8 distribution rather than choosing the newest Java release simply because it is newer.

A 32-bit runtime cannot address enough memory for this pack, and a mismatched Java version can stop Forge or individual mods from loading. Install Java before running the server archive so the launch script can find it.
Verify the runtime
- Open a terminal or command prompt on the server machine.
- Run
java -version. - Confirm that the output identifies Java 8 and a 64-bit runtime. If it reports a different major version or a 32-bit installation, correct the Java installation or system path before continuing.
If more than one Java installation is present, the script may use a different executable from the one you checked. Verify the Java path used by the server startup configuration when troubleshooting a launch failure.

Download and unpack the dedicated Skyblock server files
Choose the server archive, not a client profile
Download the Enigmatica 2 Expert Skyblock server file identified for the pack release you intend to run. One documented file is Enigmatica2ExpertSkyblockServer-1.24.zip, which targets Minecraft 1.12.2 and documents Forge 14.23.5.2781. That Forge number belongs to that specific server file; a later release may package another build, so use the version stated by the archive and its release changelog rather than copying the old number forward.
Use a clean server directory
- Create a new, empty folder dedicated to this server. Avoid extracting into an existing client instance or an older server directory.
- Extract the downloaded ZIP into that folder.
- Check that the extracted files include the supplied startup and configuration material, such as
ServerStart.bat,ServerStartLinux.sh,settings.cfg, andSERVER_GUIDE.txt. - Keep the ZIP file and release information with your administration records so you can identify exactly which pack and Forge build are installed.
The supplied server files are arranged for the pack’s installer and update procedure. Do not replace them with files copied from a single-player installation.

Complete the first server launch
Windows
- Open the extracted server folder.
- Run
ServerStart.bat. - Wait while the installer creates or downloads the required Forge and server components. The first run can take longer than later starts.
- When the server requests EULA acceptance, follow the script’s instructions and set
EULA=truein the generated EULA file. - Run
ServerStart.batagain. The second launch lets the installation finish and starts the actual server process.
Linux
- Open a terminal in the extracted directory.
- Run the provided
ServerStartLinux.shscript. Use the supplied Linux launcher rather than invoking it throughshdirectly; the repository’s guide specifically distinguishes the provided script. - Allow the installer to finish, then set
EULA=truewhen prompted or in the generated EULA file. - Start the same Linux script again to complete normal server startup.
Keep the console open until the log reaches a steady Done state. Closing the window during installation can leave a partial setup that must be repaired by rerunning the script or extracting a clean copy.
Allocate memory without starving the operating system
There are two relevant recommendations. Enigmatica’s general installation guidance says its modpacks need at least 4 GB for a 5–7-player setup. The Enigmatica 2: Expert Skyblock project page asks administrators to allocate at least 6 GB to Minecraft. Because E2E Skyblock adds the Skyblock systems and a large 1.12.2 mod set, use 6 GB as the safer initial allocation for this pack.

Set the value in the supplied configuration
Use the memory setting exposed by the server’s startup files or settings.cfg rather than creating a second, conflicting launcher command. Set the maximum heap to 6 GB, leave enough RAM for the operating system and other services, and restart the server after changing it. On a machine with exactly 6 GB of physical RAM, assigning all of it to Java can make the operating system swap or terminate processes; the host must have additional headroom.
The documented figures are guidance, not a guaranteed capacity test. Actual performance depends on concurrent players, chunk loading, automation, storage speed, view distance, and the number of machines running in loaded chunks. Increase memory only when the machine has room and monitoring shows that the server needs it; more heap does not compensate for a wrong Java version, a faulty mod, or a saturated CPU.

Configure void-island generation
Set the server level type
- Stop the server cleanly after the first setup has generated its files.
- Open
server.propertiesin the server directory. - Set the world-generation entry to
level-type=voidworld. - Save the file and start the server again.
The Skyblock project identifies voidworld as its generation type and states that every new player automatically spawns on a newly created island. The Enigmatica installation guidance also lists a voidworld preset for E2E Skyblock. If a managed-host control panel presents several void-world choices, select the one associated with Void Island Control as directed by the project documentation.
When a world already exists
World-generation settings are applied when a world is created. If you tested the server with another level type, changing level-type alone may not transform that existing world. Preserve the old world as a backup, then create the intended Skyblock world using the pack’s documented reset or world-name procedure. Never delete a world directory until you have copied it somewhere outside the live server folder.

Before inviting players, verify the complete path from launch to saved world. These checks catch configuration errors while recovery is still simple.
- Client compatibility: connect with the same Enigmatica 2: Expert Skyblock release as the server. A vanilla client or a different pack version will not provide a valid test.
- Island assignment: join with a new player account and confirm that the player receives a new island in the void world.
- Console control: issue a harmless administrative command and confirm that the server console accepts it.
- Persistence: place or change a block, stop the server through its normal command, start it again, and confirm that the change remains.
- Resource behavior: watch memory and CPU during startup and while one or more players load chunks. Use those observations to decide whether the initial 6 GB allocation is adequate.
- Recovery: confirm that you can restore a copied world and configuration directory before the server becomes a shared community world.
These are operational checks for your machine and network. They are not a published benchmark or a guarantee of a particular player count.

Back up the files that contain your progress and customizations
Back up before every pack update and before changing world-generation or major configuration settings. At minimum, copy the world and the custom files that the official update instructions identify:
- the complete world directory;
config;mods;schematics;scripts;- any local edits, startup settings, permissions, or other files you added.
Store the backup outside the live server directory and label it with the pack version and date. A backup that remains inside the folder being replaced is not a reliable rollback. For an active server, stop it cleanly first so region files and player data are flushed before copying.
Update Enigmatica 2 Expert Skyblock safely
Use the release’s Forge version
The server archive carries the Forge version expected by that release. For the documented 1.24 server file, the stated build is Forge 14.23.5.2781. Later releases can change it. Compare the new release changelog with the Forge value in its supplied settings.cfg; the repository guide says the settings file shipped with the server files contains the correct version.
Replace pack-managed files, then restore your changes
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete backup of the installation, including the world and custom files.
- Remove or replace the pack-managed
config,mods,schematics, andscriptscontent as directed by the release instructions. - Extract the new server files into the installation, or build a fresh directory and move the backed-up world into it when the release instructions call for a clean install.
- Reapply only your own changes, checking each one against the new pack version rather than blindly overwriting new defaults.
- Confirm that
settings.cfgand the new changelog agree on Forge, then launch and watch the log for errors. - Join with a matching client and repeat the island, command, save, and recovery checks before reopening the server.
Do not mix an old mods directory with a new Forge build unless the release documentation explicitly permits it. Mod and configuration mismatches are a common reason an apparently successful update fails during startup or world loading.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Enigmatica’s installation guidance describes managed hosting as the easier route and says the pack generally needs 4–8 GB; the Skyblock project page recommends at least 6 GB and describes a pre-configured server option. Treat those numbers as planning guidance, not a promise that every plan or machine will perform identically. A managed service removes much of the systems work, but it does not remove the need for matching clients, backups, version control, or testing.
Troubleshoot the failures most likely to stop startup
The script exits immediately or Forge will not launch
- Run
java -versionagain from the same account that launches the server. - Confirm that Java is 64-bit Java 8, not a 32-bit runtime or an unrelated newer installation.
- Use the supplied
ServerStart.batorServerStartLinux.shinstead of inventing a client launch command. - Check the log for a Forge version mismatch and compare it with the release’s
settings.cfg.
The server refuses to continue because of the EULA
Stop the process, open the generated EULA file, set EULA=true exactly as instructed, save it, and rerun the platform script. The change must be made in the server directory being launched.
Players see a normal terrain world or no island
Stop the server and inspect server.properties. Confirm that the level type is exactly voidworld, then test with a newly created world or a new player as appropriate. An existing world can retain its original generation, so changing the property does not necessarily convert it.
The server lags or runs out of memory
- Confirm that the Java process is 64-bit.
- Start from the Skyblock recommendation of 6 GB, provided the host has additional memory for the operating system.
- Observe whether lag occurs during startup, chunk generation, or heavy automation; those symptoms point to different resource limits.
- Reduce unnecessary concurrent workloads and loaded chunks before assigning more heap.
- Do not treat the general 4 GB, 5–7-player guidance as a guaranteed capacity for this expert pack.
An update crashes while loading
Restore the pre-update backup, verify that the client and server pack releases match, and compare the new Forge requirement with settings.cfg. Reapply custom configurations selectively after the clean pack files load. Keeping an old mods or config directory mixed with a new release is more likely to create conflicts than to preserve compatibility.
The Linux launcher behaves differently from the documented workflow
Use ServerStartLinux.sh as supplied by the repository rather than forcing it through sh. If the script cannot be run, inspect its permissions and launch it from the extracted directory so its relative paths resolve correctly.
Operational checklist
- 64-bit Java 8 is installed and confirmed with
java -version. - The dedicated Skyblock server archive, not a client instance, is extracted into an empty folder.
- The platform-specific startup script has completed its installer pass.
EULA=trueis set in the generated EULA file.- The server starts with at least 6 GB allocated when the machine can spare it.
level-type=voidworldis set before creating the live Skyblock world.- A matching client receives a new island and can reconnect after a clean restart.
- The world,
config,mods,schematics,scripts, and local edits are backed up outside the live directory. - Forge in
settings.cfgmatches the release changelog before every update.
With those conditions met, the server is using the pack’s intended runtime, installer, memory baseline, and void-world generator. Future maintenance is primarily disciplined version control: stop cleanly, back up first, keep Forge synchronized, and test the world before players return.
