To host Enigmatica 4, use the archived Enigmatica4Server-0.5.5.zip server pack for Minecraft 1.14.4, run it with 64-bit Java 8, and reserve about 4–8 GB of memory. Extract the pack into a plain local folder, launch the supplied script, accept the EULA, then configure your firewall and router if players will connect over the internet.

Enigmatica 4 is a Minecraft 1.14.4 modpack and is no longer in active development. The server release covered here is Enigmatica 4 Server 0.5.5, uploaded May 23, 2020, and built with Forge 1.14.4-28.2.16. Its archive is named Enigmatica4Server-0.5.5.zip and is listed at 131.0 MB.
That lifecycle matters. You should not assume instructions or Java settings for newer Enigmatica packs apply to version 4. If you want a currently maintained Enigmatica experience, the project page directs players toward later packs; this procedure is specifically for an existing Enigmatica 4 world or group that needs the 1.14.4 pack.

Requirements and sensible hardware
Java
Install 64-bit Java 8. Enigmatica’s Java guidance assigns Temurin 8 to Minecraft 1.16 and earlier, and Enigmatica 4 targets 1.14.4. On Windows, install a 64-bit Temurin 8 build from Adoptium. On Ubuntu or Debian, the documented package command is:

If the server script reports an unsupported class version, or your machine selects a newer Java first, correct the system PATH or edit the script to call the Java 8 executable explicitly. Do not solve a Java-version error by installing a random 32-bit runtime; all Enigmatica modpacks require 64-bit Java.
Memory and host machine
Plan for 4–8 GB of RAM allocated to the server. The Enigmatica server guide describes 4–8 GB as usual, while the CurseForge project guidance says to allocate at least 4 GB. This is the memory available to the Java process, not the total RAM in the computer. Leave additional memory for the operating system and other applications.
The official guide advises against running the server on the same computer used to play. A separate machine, a spare desktop, or a compatible virtual server gives the server a steadier supply of CPU time and memory. No official source publishes a player-capacity benchmark for this pack, so treat 4–8 GB as a starting allocation rather than a promise of a particular number of players.
Storage and folder location
Use an empty local folder on the host, such as C:MinecraftEnigmatica4 on Windows or ~/servers/enigmatica4 on Linux. Do not place the installation in OneDrive or another continuously synchronized folder. File locking from a sync client can interrupt the installer and leave an incomplete server.
Download and install the dedicated server

Open the Enigmatica 4 project’s server-files section on CurseForge and download
Enigmatica4Server-0.5.5.zip. Confirm that the file is the server pack, not the client modpack. -
Create an empty local installation directory. Do not extract over another Minecraft server or into a directory containing an older Enigmatica release.

Extract every file from the ZIP into that directory. Keep the supplied directory structure intact; the launch scripts expect the folders and libraries to be beside them.

On Windows, double-click
start-server.bat. On macOS or Linux, open a terminal in the extracted directory and runstart-server.sh. If Unix permissions prevent execution, make the script executable withchmod +x start-server.sh, then run it again.Recommended Free Tools

Wait while the installer downloads or assembles the Forge and modpack components. The first launch can take substantially longer than later starts and may appear idle while files are being prepared.

When the console displays the Minecraft EULA prompt, enter
TRUEexactly as requested and press Enter. This creates or updates the EULA acceptance file. Entering a lowercase or unrelated value will not accept it. -
Allow the process to finish starting. Once the server has fully started, stop it cleanly from the console rather than closing the terminal window.

Run the same start script a second time. The Enigmatica installation guide documents this second launch as a workaround for first-start console input behavior. Let this start complete before attempting to connect.

Confirm that the server actually started
A successful start produces a normal server directory containing the generated world and configuration files. The console should progress past Forge loading and reach a ready state rather than repeatedly printing an exception or returning immediately to the command prompt.
- Stop cleanly: use the server console’s stop command and wait for the save process to finish before closing the window.
- Check the world folder: after the first complete start, a world directory should exist. Its name depends on the server configuration.
- Check Java selection: if startup fails before Forge loads, repeat
java -versionin the same account that runs the script and confirm it is Java 8, 64-bit. - Check disk space: the 131.0 MB ZIP is only the distribution archive; installation and world data require additional space.
Prepare players’ Minecraft clients
Every player needs the Enigmatica 4 client pack for the same Minecraft and modpack release as the server. For this guide, that means Minecraft 1.14.4 and the 0.5.5-era files. A client on another Enigmatica release can have different mods, registries, recipes, or configuration data and may be rejected during login or disconnect while loading.
Have players finish installing and launching the client once before connecting. They should use the same modpack configuration you intend to keep on the server and close other launchers that might select a different Java version. The server itself must remain on 64-bit Java 8 even if a launcher offers several Java installations.
Let friends connect over your network
Players on the same home network
For a local connection, give players the host computer’s private IPv4 address and the server port. The default Java Edition port is 25565. A player on the same network enters the address in the multiplayer server dialog, using the port if it is not the default. Test locally before changing router settings; this separates a modpack or firewall problem from an internet-routing problem.

Players outside your home
Remote players generally need three things: the server must be listening, the host firewall must allow Java or the selected port, and the router must forward the port to the host computer’s private address. Minecraft’s official server guidance identifies 25565 as the default port and notes that firewall and router configuration may be required for external players.

Give the host computer a stable private address, either by configuring a DHCP reservation in the router or by assigning an address appropriate for your network.

Create an inbound firewall rule on the host for the server’s TCP port 25565. If your firewall prompts when Java first listens, allow the Java 8 server process on the intended private networks. Restrict the rule to the required networks where practical.

In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward external TCP port 25565 to the host’s private IP and internal port 25565. If you changed the server port, forward the changed value instead.

Give friends your public address, not the private address used inside your home. They should enter the public address and port in Minecraft’s multiplayer screen.

Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a phone using mobile data. Testing from inside the same network can fail on routers that do not support NAT loopback even when the forwarding rule works for friends.
Opening a port exposes a service to the internet. Keep the server and operating system patched as far as this archived pack permits, use a separate host account where possible, and close the forwarding rule when you are no longer running the server. Do not publish your home address or router credentials.

Back up before changing anything
Stop the server and wait for the save to complete before copying files. At minimum, make a dated backup of the entire world directory. A stronger backup also includes the server configuration, scripts, and modpack-specific folders so you can reproduce the exact environment.
- Keep one backup on a different physical disk or machine.
- Use a date and pack version in the filename, such as
e4-world-2026-10-15-0.5.5. - Periodically restore a copy to a temporary directory so you know the backup is usable rather than merely present.
- Never overwrite your only backup with a post-update copy.
The 0.5.5 release notes warn that updates can affect existing worlds and may remove blocks when coming from older releases. A backup is therefore a prerequisite for an update, not an optional cleanup step.

Update an Enigmatica 4 server without losing the world
Self-hosted installation

Record the current pack version, Forge version, Java version, server port, and world name.

Stop the running server cleanly and make the backup described above.

Download the intended newer server pack and extract it into a new empty directory. Do not install the new files directly over the old directory.

Run the new pack’s official installation process once, accept the EULA when prompted, and allow Forge and the pack files to finish generating.

Stop the new instance. Copy the backed-up world directory into the new server directory, preserving the world folder name and any required server properties.

Reapply only the settings you intentionally need, such as the port or whitelist. Avoid blindly copying every old configuration file into a new pack because changed mods may expect different keys.

Start the new server and watch the console for missing mods, registry warnings, or world-conversion errors. Test with an operator account before inviting the rest of the group.

Keep the old directory untouched until the new world has been inspected and a fresh backup has been completed.
Hosted-server file replacement
For a managed host, follow its Enigmatica installation workflow and take a downloadable world backup first. The Enigmatica server guide identifies folders that may need replacement during a hosted update, including configs, defaultconfigs, kubejs, libraries, mods, and patchouli_books. It also notes that obsolete setup files may need to be removed.

Do not delete the world until the host’s backup is verified. Replace the pack folders with the versions supplied by the target release, preserve the world as directed by the host’s guide, and remove only old setup files that the guide explicitly identifies. A hosted control panel may label these actions differently, so the exact buttons depend on the provider and its support for this archived 1.14.4 pack.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Both approaches can run a server, but the trade-offs are different. The table uses the decision factors that matter for an archived, memory-hungry modpack. Current provider prices and guaranteed support for Enigmatica 4 are not established here, so verify them on the date you subscribe.

Troubleshooting checklist
The script closes immediately
- Run the script from a terminal so the error remains visible.
- Confirm that the directory is writable and not synchronized by OneDrive or a similar service.
- Run
java -versionand verify 64-bit Java 8. - Check that you extracted the ZIP completely and did not move the script away from its libraries.
The installer hangs or repeatedly asks for input
Wait for disk and network activity first; the initial Forge setup can take time. Enter TRUE for the EULA when prompted. After the first complete start and clean shutdown, run the start script a second time, which is the documented workaround for first-start console input behavior.
Players receive a mod or registry mismatch
Confirm that the client and server are both using the Enigmatica 4 1.14.4 files from the same release line. Compare the server’s mods and configuration files with a clean client installation rather than adding random replacement mods. Do not update individual mods on an archived pack unless the pack’s release instructions call for it.
Friends cannot connect, but local players can
- Verify the server is listening on the intended port.
- Allow Java through the host firewall on the correct network profile.
- Check that the router forwards TCP 25565 to the host’s current private IP.
- Test using the public address from outside the home network.
- Ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are blocked by carrier-grade NAT; if so, ordinary router forwarding may not be sufficient.
The world changes after an update
Stop and restore the pre-update backup rather than continuing to explore a damaged copy. Review the target release notes for migration warnings, test the update on a duplicate world, and only promote it after important builds and machines have been checked.

Operational routine for a stable server
- Start the server from its own directory and keep the console or service logs available.
- Stop it cleanly before maintenance, backups, or file replacement.
- Back up before every pack, Forge, Java, or configuration change.
- Keep a written record of the Java version, pack version, world name, port, and any edited settings.
- Give players the exact server address and pack version, and do not change the public port without telling them.
- Because Enigmatica 4 is archived, treat third-party downloads and unofficial “fix” bundles cautiously; an apparent quick fix can create a client/server mismatch or corrupt a world.

TRUE, finish startup, stop cleanly, and run the script again. -
