To use an external SSD while your handheld is docked, connect a data-capable USB port on the dock to the drive, then confirm the operating system recognizes it before setting up game storage. If you also want to charge while playing, check that the dock supports USB-C Power Delivery (PD) passthrough and that its power budget suits the connected devices. The setup is not identical across SteamOS and Windows, and no single SSD format or model is established as a universal choice for both.
Before connecting the SSD, check your handheld and dock
Identify the handheld and operating system
Confirm whether you have a Steam Deck running SteamOS, a ROG Ally running Windows, or another configuration. Storage menus and game-library workflows depend on the operating system and launcher, so do not assume that instructions for one apply unchanged to the other.
Choose a dock with a data port and the features you need
Check the dock’s port list for a USB data port; a power-only port will not connect the SSD as storage. Consider HDMI or Ethernet only if you need them. Also check the cable and dock’s physical fit: connector placement, cable length, stand shape, and vent clearance can matter on a handheld.
Valve says, “Most USB-C compliant hubs and docks will work without issue with Steam Deck.” That is general dock guidance, not a guarantee for every device or a tested USB SSD workflow. Valve also notes that compatibility with some Linux devices can be unfamiliar or unexpected. Valve Steam Support: Docking the Steam Deck

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Check power delivery if you will play and charge
For Steam Deck to receive power through a dock, Valve says the dock or hub needs USB-C PD passthrough. Some power may be allocated to downstream devices, which can lead to a slow-charging warning. Check the dock maker’s power-allocation guidance rather than assuming its advertised maximum reaches the handheld unchanged. Valve Steam Support: Docking the Steam Deck
For one specific example, ASUS says its ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 requires a device with USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. It has three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports rated at 5 Gbps each, HDMI 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet, and a USB-C power input rated up to 100W. ASUS lists up to 80W output through the dock’s device cable and recommends a 100W-or-higher USB-C PD charger to achieve that full output; the charger is not included. Those are DG310 specifications, not universal dock requirements. ASUS ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 FAQ

Connect the dock and verify the SSD
- Connect the charger to the dock if its design calls for a separate power input. For the DG310, use the charger rating ASUS recommends if you want its stated full output.
- Connect the dock to the handheld. If charging is part of your setup, check the handheld’s power state or charging indicator.
- Plug the SSD into a USB data port on the dock, not a power-only port. If the dock has several ports, use one identified for data.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize the drive before attempting to format it or add a game library. If it does not appear, check the USB connection, port type, dock power, and the operating system’s storage controls.
- Back up anything already on the SSD before formatting. Formatting can erase data. Use the current storage controls for your operating system; do not treat a file-system recommendation for another storage type as a universal SSD instruction.
- Select or move a game installation using the platform’s current storage or launcher controls. Verify the target drive before downloading a large game.
- Test with a small transfer or installation. Then check drive visibility, charging behavior, and any display or peripheral connections you use.
Valve documents ext4 with casefolding for Steam Deck microSD cards, but that is not a universal USB SSD format instruction. The reviewed sources do not establish one formatting or library-management workflow that applies identically to SteamOS and Windows. Valve Steam Deck FAQ

ROG Ally
ASUS’s ROG Ally Series FAQ documents game installation to a UHS-II microSD card or a backward-compatible microSD reader, and specifies a 65W included AC adapter. That microSD guidance does not validate a particular external USB SSD. Check that the dock supports the Ally’s required USB-C features, then use the Windows storage and launcher controls shown on your device to verify and select the external drive. Steam Deck
Valve describes docking as using a USB-C hub with a PC: it adds connectivity but does not improve the Deck’s performance. Valve says the Deck runs at full performance in portable mode. Valve Steam Deck FAQ
SteamOS support status also depends on the device. Valve lists Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Legion Go S as officially Powered by SteamOS. Valve says SteamOS can be installed on additional AMD PCs, but Steam Support may have limited ability to troubleshoot device-specific issues. Do not assume a ROG Ally running SteamOS has the same official support standing as Steam Deck. Valve SteamOS installation page

What to compare when choosing a dock and SSD setup
- Ports: Count the USB data ports you need, and check for HDMI or Ethernet only if your setup calls for them.
- Power: Look for USB-C PD passthrough if you intend to charge while docked. Check the dock’s stated output and whether connected devices share its power budget.
- Video: Verify the dock’s video connection and capabilities against the handheld, cable, and display. ASUS says the DG310 supports one external display; actual results depend on the connected device, cable, and display.
- Fit: Check cable reach, connector position, stand dimensions, and whether the arrangement leaves vents clear.
- Drive style: A portable USB SSD is a self-contained option; an NVMe enclosure combines a separate drive and enclosure. Neither type is established here as universally compatible or faster, and no model-specific performance test is available.
