To stream with FFmpeg over JioFiber, create a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, copy that broadcast’s RTMPS address and private stream key, and set FFmpeg’s video bitrate below the sustained upload speed your connection can actually maintain. Jio’s advertised symmetric plan speeds do not guarantee the rate available from your computer to YouTube at a particular time, so verify the incoming preview and stream health before sharing the broadcast.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a broadcast created or scheduled in Live Control Room.
  • FFmpeg installed on the computer that will send the stream.
  • The current ingest address and stream key shown for that broadcast. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it in screenshots, articles, or public scripts.
  • A stable internet connection at the streaming computer. A wired connection is a useful troubleshooting option if Wi-Fi instability is suspected, but it is not a stated YouTube requirement.
  • A video source, such as a file, camera, or capture device. The example below is specifically for a local video file.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its RTMPS guidance uses port 443; always use the complete address supplied for the current stream rather than copying a host or path from an old tutorial. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the protocol and connection details.

Check what your JioFiber connection can sustain

Plan speed is not the same as end-to-end upload

Jio describes its postpaid plans as symmetric, meaning upload speed equals download speed. Its plan comparison page shows examples including 30/30 Mbps, 100/100 Mbps, and 150/150 Mbps, with 30-day validity and unlimited data; displayed prices are plus GST. These are examples on Jio’s page, not a guarantee that every subscriber has those offers. Plan availability, terms, and prices can vary by region. See Jio’s plan comparison and Jio’s postpaid FAQ.

Jio’s terms qualify plan speeds as guaranteed up to the ISP node and note that a contention ratio applies. That does not establish the throughput to YouTube’s ingest server at your location and broadcast time. Measure from the computer and connection you will use, preferably around the time you plan to stream. Repeat a speed test or observe upload over a sustained interval; a brief peak is not a reliable bitrate target. Jio’s terms describe the plan-speed qualification.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a bitrate with room for variation

Keep the total outgoing stream rate—video, audio, and transport overhead—comfortably below the lowest sustained upload result you observe. There is no universal safety percentage established here, so do not assume a fixed upload-to-bitrate ratio. If upload fluctuates, reduce resolution or bitrate and test again.

Choose YouTube-compatible FFmpeg settings

Recommended H.264 video bitrates

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, checked in 2026, recommends these H.264 video bitrates. They are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a particular final viewer quality. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for current values and separate ranges for other codecs.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These figures describe video bitrate, not the complete stream rate. Include audio and overhead when judging whether your measured upload has enough headroom. Do not apply the H.264 values automatically if you choose H.265/HEVC or AV1; YouTube lists separate ingest ranges for those codecs.

Codec, rate control, and keyframes

  • Video: H.264 is a practical compatibility-first choice for a basic FFmpeg setup. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as options.
  • Audio: AAC is a straightforward choice; YouTube also lists MP3.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR) for the recommended setup.
  • Keyframes: target a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds. That means 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. YouTube’s API documentation warns that a keyframe interval longer than four seconds can cause buffering. See the Live Streams API documentation.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Match the source and chosen output rather than forcing an unsuitable frame rate.

Configure FFmpeg for a local video file

This template sends a file as a conservative 720p30 H.264 stream at 4 Mbps video bitrate. It is an illustrative template, not a tested command. Replace every placeholder, use your current YouTube RTMPS endpoint, and adjust the output and bitrate to the source and measured sustained upload.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M
  -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST:443/APP/STREAM_KEY"

Use YouTube’s complete RTMPS address where available; the host and path shown are placeholders, not a universal endpoint. FFmpeg’s available encoder options depend on how it was built. Its documentation describes rate-control options such as -maxrate and -bufsize: FFmpeg documentation.

What the important options do

  • -re reads a file at its native rate instead of sending it faster than real time.
  • -i INPUT identifies the input file. Replace INPUT with the local file path.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 encoding; -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for lower encoding effort.
  • -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M sets the target and maximum video rate in this example. Lower them if sustained upload cannot comfortably support the complete stream.
  • -bufsize 8M sets the rate-control buffer in this example; FFmpeg documents it as part of rate control.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps. For 60 fps, use 120 for the same interval.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a broadly compatible pixel format.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Ensure the input actually has an audio track if audio is expected.
  • -f flv selects the container format used for this RTMP/RTMPS-style output.

If the source already has suitable codecs, stream copy may avoid re-encoding, but first verify its codec, frame rate, keyframe spacing, and audio. Camera, capture-card, and desktop inputs require operating-system- and device-specific input arguments; the file command above cannot be used unchanged for them.

Start the stream and verify it in YouTube

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast and copy its current ingest address and stream key.
  2. Insert those values into your FFmpeg output address, keeping the key private. Confirm the address uses the provided RTMPS endpoint and, where specified, port 443.
  3. Run FFmpeg and check that it is sending in real time rather than falling behind.
  4. Open the broadcast preview in Live Control Room. Confirm video and audio appear and that the stream-health status is healthy before clicking “Go Live” or sharing the link.

YouTube’s stream-health information can flag conditions such as videoBitrateLow, framerateMismatch, and noAudioStream. The Live Streams API documentation describes stream health and ingestion information.

Troubleshoot connection, buffering, and missing audio

FFmpeg cannot connect or reports an SSL error or timeout

  • Re-copy the ingest address from the current broadcast; do not rely on an old URL.
  • Check that the scheme, hostname, path, and stream key match the current settings. A server name or path from another stream may not work.
  • Use the supplied RTMPS address and port 443 when that is what YouTube provides. Incorrect server names, ports, or TLS setup can cause SSL errors and timeouts.
  • Confirm the stream key has not been mistyped or exposed and changed since you copied it.

The preview buffers or reports low bitrate

  • Measure sustained upload again at the streaming computer and around the intended broadcast time.
  • Lower the video bitrate; if needed, reduce resolution or frame rate and retest.
  • Check FFmpeg’s real-time encoding performance and ensure its output is not lagging behind the source.
  • Confirm the keyframe interval is about two seconds and no longer than four seconds.
  • If using Wi-Fi, test near the router or try a wired connection to help isolate local wireless instability.

Video appears, but audio does not

  • Check that the selected input has an audio track or that the correct microphone/audio device is selected.
  • Confirm FFmpeg is mapping and encoding audio; for the file example, inspect the input and retain a valid audio stream for the AAC output.
  • Use YouTube’s preview and health status to confirm whether audio is being received.

The stream connects, but the broadcast is not ready to share

Wait for the incoming preview and health checks to confirm the signal is present before going live. Fix any health warning first, particularly low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio. A connected encoder alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving the intended picture and sound.

Keep the stream within YouTube’s content rules

FFmpeg only transports and encodes the material you provide; it does not grant rights to that material or make a broadcast compliant. Use video and audio you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. Repeated or reused material can also raise channel monetization-policy issues even when a live encoder is configured correctly. Review YouTube’s live encoder guidance and the policies that apply to your channel and content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded video rather than a live camera or desktop feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
